SparrowMental health problems are a very sensitive topic in the black community mainly because of the stigma that mental illness is a result of an individual being weak. According to a report done by blackwomenshealth.com, in 2011  the depression rate among black women was estimated to be 50% higher than that of white women. With media reporting murders of women such as Sandra Bland how are we to expect the rate to be anything but dismal? But all is not lost and there is hope - Lisa Y. Sparrow. Lisa is a divorced mom of 2 children who lives in Columbus, Ohio. She has bounced between foster homes and mental hospitals while growing up. During her early adult years she suffered multiple miscarriages and spent many moments, like many of us, feeling unloved and unwanted. Lisa used her experiences as a springboard to grow in her faith and to encourage and uplift herself. By doing so she encourages not only her children but everyone she encounters and shares her story of empowerment with. And share she does in her autobiography - His Eye is on the Sparrow. Kim’s love for writing became a bit of a distant memory due to her having to focus on graduating high school while raising her young prince Christopher.  She was determined to be successful at any cost. On her down time she started to read again but soon found out that she could write her own book and with a little motivation she decided to write. She never thought she would have the time to write a book, work as a certified nursing aid, and also taken care of her very active son. Kim also has an associate’s degree as a medical assistant. She also will be returning back to school to get her bachelor’s and also master’s, but no matter what she will continue to use her pen to write some amazing novels. Born to a mother who was a teacher and a graduate from Texas A&M University you couldn't so much as watch a Disney movie if you hadn't read the book beforehand. Sunny Giovanni is an advocate for gay and transgender rights, and says: "You can't help who you are and you damn sure can't help who you love. Gio is a mother of three children, the founder of Lucid Legends Publishing/ Photography, Kno Joke Entertainment, the host of "We Talk TOO Much Radio" on BlogTalk Radio and blogs on Tumblr under the name "KnoJokeGio".  At the age of twenty-four someone made the decision for Gio to "stop playing around and start publishing" her own works. The father of her children promised that he would handle everything else if only she would pick up the pen after many down moments and discouragement from major companies who sighted the young author. "Either I was too brutal or I was too plain. Either it wasn't enough drama or it wasn't enough drugs in my books. I almost broke after that." Seeing the talent the mother of his children possessed, Gio's "Trojan" handed her the money to make her own name under the only circumstance that she only depends on herself and sticks to her computer or laptop for at least eight hours a day. "I wrote during my hard times. That's how I got through it all. Because of that I have stocks of unreleased works, but it's only so many you can release at one time. An author is someone who has lived life to the fullest, from the low points to its highs. We just place them in poetic words and paint a beautiful picture." Gio boasts on her saying and the quote to her lifeline "I bleed ink and I live words." 00:45:00Red Room Interviewsnobooks and authors, urbanfiction,BRPPInterviewers,SunnyGiovanni,ReadingIn southern Dallas, Texas, Sunny Giovanni-- or "Gio" as she likes to be called-- was born on the fifth day of June in 1989. At 30 years old, she is blazing a trail that many have been inspired by. The oldest of eleven children, K.S. graduated from Georgia Medical Institute with a diploma in Medical Billing and Coding in 2005 as well as  Colorado Technical College in 2011 with a degree in Business (while minoring in Criminal Justice). Since then, she’s been moving forward with building a unique and touching legacy. On May 20, 2010, following the birth of her youngest child, K.S. was diagnosed with SLE, also known as Lupus. Subsequently, she was also diagnosed with Discoid Lupus (Skin Lupus), Fibromyalgia, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Hypotension, Hypothyroids, Cricoarytenoiditis (Lupus in her voice box), and severe depression.  With a myriad of health issues staring her in the face at the age of 25, K.S. had to make a decision on whether she would allow it to consume her or fight for the life she and her family deserved to enjoy. The choice soon turned into a mantra commonly used when discussing her life: “I have Lupus. Lupus doesn’t have me.” Taking her life story and using it to inspire others, K.S. has penned two poetry books dedicated to building a connection from one Lupie to another and helping others to understand the emotions and trials that a Lupus patient may endure. Still Standing and Affectionately 360 are poetic gems that are touching for patients of any kind, but also speak to the hearts of every individual who reads them.  In 2013, K.S. was awarded as Poet of the Year for her outstanding contributions to the field of poetry.   01:05:00Red Room Interviewsnoauthor,lupus,events,writerK.S.
