I talked about being Mind Full and today I want to take about being Mindful I have done years of therapy of all kinds including lots of DBT (Dialectacle Behavioral Therapy), indicated for personality disorders and obsessive behaviors and a few other diagnoses. DBT, if you permit me to oversimplify it a bit, is the merging of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Zen Buddhism... and relies heavily on doing things mindfully. Every DBT group I have ever been in starts with going over what it means to be mindful and talks about three states of mind, Reasonable, Emotional, and Wise... and as an aside, I think the Resasonable mind should be called the Rational Mind. The rational mind is the seat of contemplation and analysis. Basically the executive function of the frontal cortex The Emotional mind might also do with a different name more suggestive of its function, something like the Motivated Mind, or Triggered Mind, or even the Action Mind. It is the seat of taking action. It sits down in what some call the lizard brain and involves the functions the hippocampus and amygdala and is very closely linked to our memories, espeically those experiences of deep personal meaning. I arrived at the bus shelter today and this man who I would place at about 70, full white beard and a completely bald asked me... "do you know any artists?" We chatted for a bit and it turns out this gentleman has some ideas for commericals and single panel comics but he has no way to get them made. They are crystal clear in his head and unable to see them with his eyes, and share them with others. My bus shelter friend had ideas for M&Ms dancing the can-can singing "take a chance on me" (something about counter advertising against the the peanut butter scare a few years back) and Santa doing a "Got Milk" ad. His head was full of ideas but he was frustrated that he could not actually get them made for everyone else to enjoy, and in particular his wife of nearly 50 years. I think I have a sense of what ole Ben was dealing with, you see I occasionally get plagued with run away thoughts... suddenly very large projects or problems are crystal clear, if only I can the design out of my head and create/solve what I am working on... in variably the clarity in my mind resprents many hours, days or even weeks of work...  Tonight on Random Thoughts with Random Excess I talk about being Mind Full, and not Mindful.  If you enjoy these mini pod casts, might I suggest you also check out my Blog at ArisenStrength.Com, follow me on Twitter, and consume some of my Random Thoughts on FB 00:15:00RandomExcessnoRandom Thoughts,Random Excess,Arisen Strength,The Pillars,SupportSometimes the Random Thoughts are screaming to get out of my head.Random Thoughts with Random Excess Ep 4: The Universe is Neutralhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/randomexcess/2015/09/14/random-thoughts-with-random-excess-ep-4-the-universe-is-neutralGoalshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/randomexcess/2015/09/14/random-thoughts-with-random-excess-ep-4-the-universe-is-neutral/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/randomexcess/2015/09/14/random-thoughts-with-random-excess-ep-4-the-universe-is-neutralMon, 14 Sep 2015 16:30:00 GMTRandom Thoughts with Random Excess Ep 4: The Universe is NeutralI take a few minutes out of my day to share with you (and process for myself) thoughts I have been turning over. Sometimes those thoughts are reminders to me to be more aware, to embrace the mement and to be open to change.  Today I am going to be talking about my perspective that the Universe is neutral. That the Universe just is.  That the good or bad I see is ultimately my choice. The more good I choose to see, the more good I do see...  If you find these commentaries interesting and are interested in consuming more Random Thoughts like me suggest my blog The Pillars over on ArisenStrength.com. . From there you can see my twitter feed and Facebook feed for Random Thoughts with Random Excess. Or, more likely, I get "THAT" sense is since I identify "THEIR" personal stories so strongly with "MY OWN" personal descent into mental illness and abusive drinking. I lost my house, my job, my wife, my assets and my sanity. In retrospect I went from everything being "OKAY" to rock bottom about a year. I ended up in a crisis unit, intensive day treatment, and lived nine months in a half-way house for dually diagnosed people (substance and mental health).  If I had been able to articulate my life at the beginning of my fall I may have been able to make changes then before things spun out of control for me. Life would have taken me on a much different journey. Performance. Feedback. Revision. That Crisis was really an opportunity to be better prepared the next time I found myself at that crossroad. 00:15:00RandomExcessnoSupport,Empower,Celebrate,Crossroads,Random ThoughtsWhen talking with people I pick up on a quiet sadness and profound pain in their conversationRandom Thoughts with Random Excess Ep 2: Accountabilityhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/randomexcess/2015/09/12/random-thoughts-with-random-excess-ep-2-accountabilityGoalshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/randomexcess/2015/09/12/random-thoughts-with-random-excess-ep-2-accountability/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/randomexcess/2015/09/12/random-thoughts-with-random-excess-ep-2-accountabilitySat, 12 Sep 2015 16:30:00 GMTRandom Thoughts with Random Excess Ep 2: AccountabilityUltimately we are all accountable to ourselves. So how I be accountable to myself by being accountable to others?   I am accountable to myself every day when I make my morning commitment to not drink. One Day at a Time is the only way I know how to not drink and daily I make a commitment and I go through my 5 point accountability checklist: 1) Did I make my daily commitment yesterday? 2) Did I stay sober yesterday? 3) Have I been sober so far today? 4) Am I ready to make a commitment for today to remain sober? 5) How many days do I have? We are all on unique journeys, but those of us on a path of recovery see many of the same sights and by sharing our experiences (what works and what did not work) we can Support each other, Empower each other and even Celebrate our accomplishments.  00:15:00RandomExcessnoSupport,Empower,Celebrate,Accountability,Self-EsteemUltimately we are all accountable to ourselves. Improve. Share. I guess this show qualifies by default as Share, but I also hope to make use of Learn and Improve while I am here. Now, on to the business of Episode 1, in the battle of for civil rights certain names have gravitas and Rosa Parks is one of them. Kim Davis is no Rosa Parks, she is more of a James. F. Blake. Who is James F. Blake? Well, tune in today and find out who he is and then judge if I make a good point. Performance. Feedback.
