According to Rother and Shook in Learning to See, “Material and information flow are two sides of the same coin. You must map both of them.” While primary focus of Lean should be on improvement of the processes themselves, the quality of the underlying data is a physical and logical manifestation of the condition of the process. Just like Toyota says that the shop floor is a reflection of management, in information-intensive industries (health care, banking, and so on) the flow of work is often represented by transactions stored in one or several databases – plus a myriad of disconnected spreadsheets and other data sources. What can we learn from this, and how can it guide our improvement efforts? Listen to Steve Bell, co-author of the recently released new book “Lean IT – Enabling and Sustaining Your Lean Transformation” explore the implications of data quality to the overall Lean Transformation. You’re also invited to join Steve on February 3rd in San Francisco at the Lean Enterprise Institute’s Lean IT workshop. www.steadyimprovement.com 00:31:00Steven C WilsonnoSteve Bell - Lean IT,IT in Lean - Steve Bell,Steve Bell and Lean in IT,Steve Bell and Lean IT,Lean in ITThough many Lean practitioners prefer to avoid the entanglements of information systems during a Lean transformation, it’s hard to conceive of how an enterpriseDr. Mikel J. Every industry or profession has its key performance indicators (KPIs) that provide insights to the processes which produce their products or services. In software, one of the most fundamental measures is size. Without a size measure, other software metrics (e.g., duration, effort, cost, defects) lose their value, as they become difficult to scale and normalize. Software size is one of the most basic measures a manager can take, and yet it is surprising how many reasonably successful organizations do not measure software size at all. Equally as surprising are the statistics published by the Standish Group and others, that illustrate what a sorry state of affairs the software industry is currently in. Listen in, as Steve and James discuss the incredible value that EZ-Metrix can provide any organization that builds software of any kind. 01:00:00Steven C WilsonnoEZ- Metrix,Code Counting,Key Process Indicators,Software development, measuring softwareInvented by James Heires, EZ Metrix is a web-based code counting utility.
