A tough, gritty story of one man's recovery from alcoholism in a halfway house. Located in a decaying inner-city neighborhood, Hope House is the last stop for men at the bottom of their addictions.

In his own words, one man describes his 12-Step journey from hopeless, suicidal despair to a spiritual awakening and freedom from his alcoholic obsession. Along the way we meet the other 20-some residents of Hope House, each trying to awaken from his own private nightmare of addiction. Some of them survive and some do not.

We glimpse the dope man who lives up the alley across the street; we meet teenage prostitutes desperate for another turn at the crack pipe. We meet sober old-timers, like our narrator's sponsor Frank, who freely share their experience, strength and hope with newcomers.

This is a story of inspiration for those stricken with a hopeless condition of body and mind; it is a vivid and close-up look at addiction and recovery in marginalized men who lack the safety-net resources to get them into the "gold-plated" rehabilitation facilities we read so much about.

J. Durbin is the pen name of hoosier novelist and poet Kitrell Andis, whose novels Bookstore (1997) and The Summer Ho Chi Minh Died (2015) are currently available, and whose collection of poems Days for an Occasion will be released in the spring of 2016 from Chatter House Press.

Here's just some of the topics we'll discuss:

  • The difference between a treatment facility and a halfway house
  • Is the 12-step approach really successful
  • Will there ever be a cure for alcoholism / drug addiction?
