Surveyors Roundtable: The Career Path for Surveyors

At IBEX 2011, members of MITEC (Marine Industry Training & Education Council) met to discuss changes in the group’s mission statement and membership. Part of that discussion included concerns about “portable credentials” in the marine industry so that employers, employees, and clients are all on the same page. Marine surveying is no different from other parts of the industry. We lack a common job description, and a “career path” as well. In this episode, we’ll talk about how the job of surveying can evolve from a person’s first interest in writing a report to the decision to grow a career. What are the common skill sets that need to be identified and acquired? And how can new surveyors, especially young and enthusiastic ones, make workable plans to move through the steps to success?
