You may be any one, or some combination of roles to play in the coming storm that Americans, and democracy will necessarily encounter--but not necessarily endure intact.  Notice anything missing in that list? This is not a political issue. Parties don't count--unless you can clearly identify the methodologies and strategies employed against the storm. This is a national emergency, and it requires citizen, period. Every day we avoid the painful process of recovery to some, other, better reflection of who it is we determine ourselves to be as a nation, you can simply calculate one decade for that change to be effected.  That is a rough estimate, and it is mine. We have never been here before, but we do have relevant history that can inform our estimates. History is never, ever about what was. History is always about what is, as seen through the eyes of the "winners". There are presently several possible ways of writing our own future history, and we are the authors. What will YOU say? Women Democrats or Smarter, Dedicated Legislators? Special elections thus far have forecast a power shuffle in American politics. Given that some Governors (Walker in Wisconsin, for instance) are "foregoing" special elections to avoid losing dependable Republican seats to the Democrats, and some very special situations right now in Arizona and Texas, for instance--not to mention our home here in Tennessee, it seems that at least minimally aware politicians are feeling the tsunami coming. Many of those running (as mostly Democrats) are women. This is seen by the electorate as a two-stroke power grab. The conversation ranges from "Throw da bums out!" to "We need more women in Congress!". But is that actually true? Think about it. What we need are loyal, dedicated, committed and empowered legislators who will be from the Democratic wing of the Democratic party in my view. If we take back the Congress, yet have zero plan or ability to return American democracy, we very simply will not do so. That is, to me a much more important issue facing our nation than the impeachment of the current "President". From the Court House to the White House, and beyond, district boundaries, election security, and a whole host of important issues facting the American citizen lie in the wings begging for solutions, not talk. It has been a busy week (again) on the national news front, and especially the political front.  Lots of folks making waves at, and because of the CPAC meetings, to be sure. Manafort and Gates, one a convicted felon for "Conspiracy against the United States", and one with additioional charges made to his original indictment for the same and other crimes. Security clearances are suddently a "thing". Burials in Florida, with an outbreak of protest against, among others, the National Rifle Association and those who are members, or provide member benefits.  Robert Mueller's investigation currently shows us two things: 1. He is not anywhere near complete with his multiple investigations, even while the Democratic and Republican House Investigations have competing (and, some would say cumulative) "Memos" for us to see, and attempt to understand, then shuffle together into one cogent document.  2. If you talk a look at Mueller's conviction rate versus his indictment rate so far, it is really quite impressive.  But what does this all mean for citizen? We as citizen believe that democracy does not all inclusively mean "to vote". Voting is but the first small step of citizenship in our democracy. But it is a most important step. If you are not registered, and qualified to vote in the next upcoming election, democracy could be lost in America. Do you realize that? Does it bother you? If so, how much? If not, why not? Join us as we examine this issue from the court house to the White House, including a flurry of voting rights cases making their way from states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, Florida and 27 other states to our Supreme Court, in 2018.  It is a really big deal, and voters being arbitrarily "purged" from voter rolls for various and sundry reasons is a current event, not a historical romp through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 nor the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It was a huge deal in the mid 1700s when our founders were trying to figure out what a democracy, a Republic, much less a democratic republic would look like. It has remained a huge deal ever since.  Even those basic rights of citizen to vote are currently under extreme attack. Citizen is allowing it. That is not only wrongheaded thinking. It is not enough, important as it is, to run for office from the Court House to the White House. Victors must be qualified for the positions they would hold. They must dedicate themselves to the people of the United States--all of them. They must serve, and lead our land back to our former greatness.    America has always been a great nation. The challenge for us (once again) is to have all of us working to make America not only a great nation, but as Senator Robert Kennedy said, "a good nation". How About You? It is becoming painfully clear that my country, on several levels, is approaching some very, very difficult times. I have some difficulty ranking them. How about you? What do YOU see? Among the items on my list is an awareness that citizen having a conversation about any of the items on my list is becoming more difficult, more scarey both in public and private to even attempt. The division in America is complete, and the two sides are not discussing anything. As citizen, we have many imperative issues to address, and begin to solve. This episode is my small effort to do so.  The show will work if YOU participate as citizen, regardless of which side of the division you happen to be on. For what I believe to be an accurate historical moment in our national history, study the USA in the spring/fall of 1859. Failure of citizen to engage in civil discourse during those days resulted, as could well have been projected in advance, in the beginnng volleys of the American Civil War.  While many thousands of our fellow citizens cannot participate, because they have lost all they own, have no power or communications across all the American geographic properties, their fellow citizens are coming to their aid to help them clear debris--for a price triple what FEMA will pay for. In case you missed it, 3/4 of the entire world population is looking to America as their last, best hope for freedom. Tyranny is very much alive and well, and many would claim that statement to be true right here in the USA. Can history inform us? Will we dare, as citizen to look at, evaluate, process and understand our history well enough, soon enough to make our future history reflect our current realities, goals, plans and dreams as Americans?  November's election will surely answer that question. Which answer do you wish it to be, and which answer should it, in fact, be? In this episode, we are going to frame our discorse around the period of World War and Depression.  WWI (The Great War), The Great Depression, and WW II have much to teach in in terms of who we were, who we are today, and who we could become tomorrow.  Many in today's American Society talk as if solutions used during these historic times would be preferred for those who find themselves living in a time, a condition, and a land they barely recognize. The fact that more citizens in my county are now registered AND qualified to vote than has ever been the case...EVER. 68% (D). And every day of this early voting session of the General Election has, in my community, set a new daily early voting record. That's politics: local, and personal. Tennessee may yet turn Blue this year.  I came to Tennessee from Southern Illinois. I was, for several years, a proud Illini before breaking my personal history of following the "Lincoln Trail". I am aware of Illinois politics.  Sensata (previously Honeywell) in Freeport, Illinois has been the property of Bain Capitol for some time. After non-stop record setting quarters, Bain has decided to move the plant to China, for yet MORE profit. But, what of the employees left behind?  After they train their replacement Chinese workers, they will be left to their own devices. Period. We'll spend some time today with some of them.
