As far back as he can remember, he has always wanted to be a medical doctor, but he never pursued that career from the belief that he would never be smart enough to make it, and not even having the courage to try. Science, on the other hand, was a field Anthony has always excelled in he never paid any attention to it from receiving awards to problem-solving and researching with ease. Anthony's father would tell him everything is mathematics and science, so it became literal for him.   Anthony enrolled at Sanford Brown College as a Medical Assistant hoping to work in a hospital first and network, but he switched to Massage Therapy to chase money. That’s was when he fell in love with the human body and the amazing machinations of it. With the thought of anatomy in his mind once again after opening and closing his own massage parlor, Anthony decided to once again pursue a career as a medical doctor, but another detour sparked his attention. The journey began with him realizing that neither was enough and that he wanted to do more.  While enrolled at Georgia Perimeter College in 2014, only a two-year college, Anthony was ready to shift to the next phase at a four-year institution, but he stumbled upon a program he saw at Atlanta Technical College called "Bioscience Technology". He completed a certificate as an Environmental Lab Tech, working on the second in Regulatory Compliance and then his associates! Anthony is also interning at Georgia Institute of Technology doing graduate level research. His plan is to attend Ga Tech for Biomedical Engineering, then apply to a Medical school with eyes on Morehouse School of Medicine for their M.D./Ph.D. program!   01:13:00Original Man Scientificnoscience,bio-science,environmental,lab tech, gatechJoin us this Saturday, March 10th at 6pm EST as we talk with Anthony F. He completed residency at the University of Texas at Houston. Dr. Akili practiced in a federally funded health facility in Houston prior to opening his own private practice in 2003.  Being traditionally trained in allopathic, western medicine, he has concluded that a medical society with the best technologies, the most doctors, medications, and medical facilities is not producing adequate solutions to restore and heal the body. As such, Dr. Akili now studies alternative therapies designed to provide a holistic approach to restoring the body through nutrition and alternative therapies. Recognizing this need and the lack of information available to the society, Dr. Akili began offering a series of “How To” seminars designed to educate and improve mental, emotional and physical health. Dr. Akili has lectured at various events including community health fairs, schools and religious institutions. He participated on a panel discussions during Saviours’ Day from 2009 – 2014 and was a guest panelist during Saviours’ Day 2015 wherein the Nation addressed Viruses: Weapons of Mass Destruction. He is a staunch supporter of his community and has volunteered his time, talent and finances to improve the community. Dr. Akili Co Founded Thy Kingdom Come (TKC) – a coalition of Black spiritual men who began a soap business, weekend tutor program, mentorship program and the Resurrection Zone – which provided housing for recently released incarcerated brothers which resulted in Brothers joining the Nation of Islam. Dr. Akili has participated in “Self-Improvement” presentation which allowed him to interact with 4000 first timers in jail. Born in Central Islip, New York, Sabria moved with her family to Marietta, Georgia when she was only four and is now based in the Atlanta area. Sabria’s STEM interests grew when she attended MCAA for her 4th and 5th grade of elementary school. When the public school system became overly distracting and a negative environment for Sabria, her mother pulled her out and returned her to homeschooling. At age 11, Sabria’s mother signed her up for an online homeschool program called Georgia Virtual School (GaVS), where she began taking high school level courses. Once she excelled in classes for the first tryout semester, Sabria continued attending this program until spring of 2016. That very fall, she began college as a MOWR student at Gwinnett Tech. In addition to attending her undergraduate program, Sabria has been shadowing doctors at the American Clinics for Preventive Medicine (ACPM) since October of last year, gaining immense insight and hands-on experience of doctors’ day-to-day responsibilities. In 1996, Luewilla won a Chicago Foundation for Education Small Grant to implement her “Building Better Ballet Bodies Program” (BBB). Through this short-term program, she taught students, math, science, and health concepts through the use of ballet dance technique. Subsequent to this program, Luewilla was nominated and awarded the “Talented Teacher Award.” Recently, in 2016, Luewilla decided to resurrect and revise the BBB program, now calling it “STEMulating Dance.” STEM being the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, STEMulating Dance is a program to help “STEMulate” the mind, enhance innovative thinking and increase motivation for learning math and science through the engagement of various dance techniques.  01:58:00Original Man ScientificnoSTEM Teacher, dance,Zenith Dance Company,Arts & SciencesLuewilla X (Smith-Barnett) has had a passion for dance since childhood. She came into OSU having a specific plan on what she wanted to do: Nursing. During her freshman year, she ran into a couple of obstacles in which lead her to change my major from a Bachelor’s of  Science in Nursing (BSN) to a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Sciences with a minor in Clinical Psychology. This was a drastic transition for Selena because she had always planned to get her BSN and go to graduate school to become a nurse practitioner. Prior to her switching majors, she decided to take the initiative to take advantage of the opportunities given on campus. Selena came across many research positions she could apply for as a freshman in college. While researching what type of research position she wanted to apply for, she came across a study on pregnant women. Once Selena applied, she was given an interview that following week and got accepted for the position with no problems. She was quite excited to be going into research. This was something she had always been taught or heard of people doing it, so to actually be a part of the research team is something she was glad to officially be a part of. When she first started working in the lab, they were doing research on pregnant women, looking at the links between the psychological (life stressors, mood, social support, etc.) and physical affects the influenza vaccine (flu shot) has on both the mother and the newborn.       01:18:00Original Man Scientificnomedicine, psychology, research, pregnancy, vaccinesJoin us Sunday, September 24th, at 6 pm EST as we speak with a young researcher who is concerned with the health of expecting mothers!422dac47-28ee-45c1-90c2-a30954b198ec25fullSeason 2, Episode 4; The Mathematics of A New Worldhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/omsstemfiles/2017/09/17/season-2-episode-4-the-mathematics-of-a-new-worldSciencehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/omsstemfiles/2017/09/17/season-2-episode-4-the-mathematics-of-a-new-world/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/omsstemfiles/2017/09/17/season-2-episode-4-the-mathematics-of-a-new-worldSun, 17 Sep 2017 22:00:00 GMTSeason 2, Episode 4; The Mathematics of A New WorldMr. Muhammad is currently a full-time mathematics professor at Malcolm X College. In 2002, he discovered the presence of a degenerative disease in the brain of former pro football player Mike Webster, naming the condition chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). His efforts to raise awareness of CTE were rebuffed by the NFL, although mounting evidence eventually forced the league to make concessions. Omalu's work was dramatized in the 2015 film Concussion, with actor Will Smith portraying the Nigerian-born doctor.  The sixth of seven children of a civil engineer and a seamstress, Omalu was a shy but gifted student with a fertile imagination. He was admitted to the Federal Government College in Enugu at age 12 and dreamed of being an airline pilot. However, at age 15 he began medical school at the University of Nigeria.  After earning his degree in 1990, Omalu interned at Jos University Hospital, before being accepted to a visiting scholar program at the University of Washington in 1994. He then served his residency at Harlem Hospital Center, where he developed his interest in pathology.  In 1999, Omalu moved to Pittsburgh to train under noted pathologist Cyril Wecht at the Allegheny County Coroner's Office. Before Girls Who Code, she thought computer science was going to be hard and confusing, but after studying programs like Scratch and Codesters and being surrounded by the company of my women in technology friends, she could be happy with learning the basics of CS like HTML and CSS before learning it in a college classroom. The organization presented Khalliday with opportunities of doing research, designing, and helping recruit more members like myself. After Girls Who Code, I wanted to join more STEM clubs at my school like the YEEA Club (Youth Empowerment for Environmental Awareness) and the Carver High School Robotics Team. After being inspired, she was given the opportunity to intern at Georgia Tech as a Computer Science Student Assistant under a Georgia Tech professor she met while attending a WIT meeting! As of today, Khalliday is the Alumni Liaison for Girls Who Code. Her first year at Girls Who Code was amazing as far as helping to find her passion learning new computer science concepts. As the Alumni Liaison, she recruited 10th and 11th grade girls for our 2016 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program. This 7-week program will show young girls the many advantages of computer science in various occupations. Even before her promotion, Khalliday found a way to get involved in inspiring young people into STEM. After her first year in Girls Who Code, she was selected to be the representative for the club at the 2015 American Educational Research Association in Chicago, Illinois. Our job was to find the cause of gender and minority gaps in STEM fields and methods of closing these gaps. After a month of this research, they presented their findings to prestigious researchers, high school students, and the former AERA president, Joyce E. King.   01:08:00Original Man Scientificnowomen in tech,STEM,Mercer University, codingThis Saturday, join us as we get to know one of young women in technology, Khalliday Muhammad!Season 1: Episode 12; Your First Doctorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/omsstemfiles/2017/03/11/season-1-episode-12-your-first-doctorSciencehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/omsstemfiles/2017/03/11/season-1-episode-12-your-first-doctor/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/omsstemfiles/2017/03/11/season-1-episode-12-your-first-doctorSat, 11 Mar 2017 22:00:00 GMTSeason 1: Episode 12; Your First Doctor One word could be used to describe Dr. Mayyada Muhammad….resilient.
