He worked on the tugboats until running aground and sinking in the Haida Gwai. He then found work ashore as  boatbuilder.             In 1975, with a mortgage and a family, he was laid off, couldn’t find work, and started a boat repair company, which he ran for twenty years. In 1997 he retrained and opened a practice as a psychotherapist. From 2002 - 2012 he became Executive Director of non-profit mental health service providers. He is currently renovating his home and learning how to become a writer. About The Book.         Rod is unhappy with the dullness of small town post-war England and, at age sixteen, escapes by going sea. Life aboard ship presents a host of unexpected challenges. But as the world unfolds before him, a variety of fascinating experiences capture his attention: Mao’s China, the poverty of Africa, the abundance of America, exotic Tahiti, insurgents in Aden, Sumo wrestlers, and bold Swedish women all blend together in an intoxicating kaleidoscope of cultures and adventures.          Young and impressionable, Rod tries to fit into the strange new environment of shipboard life by following the not always helpful advice and behaviours of his fellow shipmates. This is a coming-of-age tale set in the sixties on the background of the high seas. Due to an unexpected change of course, the final voyage leaves Rod high and dry in Vancouver. Kerry is the fourth generation of her family to live at the foot of Grouse Mountain, in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Growing up, walking the trails and seeing the wild life, instilled in her a love for nature. She lives in the family home with her husband Michael and children. Writing a book was something that, as a child, Kerry had told her grandmother she would do one day, and in 2008, she discovered her grandfather Andy Cruickshank’s diary tucked inside a worn, yellowed envelope. Fascinated, she put her graduate studies on hold and, using the diary as one of her sources, began to write Four Degrees Celsius: A story of Arcitc Peril, (Dundurn Press, 2012, Toronto). Her second book, Death Wins in the Arctic, The Lost Winter Patrol of 1910 (Dundurn Press, Toronto) was published a year later, and also became an Amazon 100 Bestseller, in a variety of categories.  Her deep interest in Canadian history and her love for the Far North is reflected in her writing. Sanford Osler was introduced to the canoe as a youngster at summer camp, an event that sparked a lifelong interest in the role of the canoe in our history and modern-day lives. This fascination led him to collect information on the subject over many years, meet many of the colourful characters involved with canoes and give talks about these craft to audiences across British Columbia. The book traces the evolution of the various types of canoes (broadly defined to include kayaks and dragon boats) found in BC from their first appearance here to the present, and looks at the impact they have had on the province and its people. Her first novella, titled "The Secret of Rodeo Ranch," was completed in Grade 5. From there (after more schooling!) she went on to a job in a corporate training centre that involved lots and lots of writing, wrote bios for artists and did some product writing, then came full circle and is now editing her first mystery novel while also working on a memoir. Since her novel is a mystery that takes place in a mountain town, she's not so sure how far she's really come from "The Secret of Rodeo Ranch", but she's sure enjoying the ride! Here, she talks with host Sonia Nadina Haynes about writing in general and the benefits of being part of a writer's group. www.nswriters.org 00:31:00Poets ProsenoCathy Scrimshaw,Mystery novel,North Shore Writers, books, writing groupsCathy Scrimshaw, Past President and Editor of the North Shore Writer's Association, has been writing since she can remember.
