Bruno’s departure from SJSC to the California Department of Corrections later that semester provided a key opportunity upon which Uchida, who celebrated his 97th birthday on April 1, would pounce. But upon America’s entrance into World War II, Uchida joined the Army. There he and his Japanese peers—just as Black Americans—served in segregated units. Initially, his unit served KP (Kitchen Patrol) duty, and cleaned military bases throughout the Midwest. A 26-year member of the NBA PR community, Ridder is currently serving his second tour of duty as the Pacific Division’s representative on the NBA’s PR Advisory Committee. Prior to being promoted to his current position, Ridder spent eight seasons as the team’s executive director of public relations after joining the organization prior to the 1998-99 campaign as the team’s PR director.  In his current capacity, Ridder is the primary liaison between the Warriors and the local, national and international media. He is responsible for creating various PR plans and strategies for the organization and for coordinating and overseeing all player/media interviews, press conferences and written information disseminated by the team. Additionally, he oversees the team’s corporate and community communications efforts. A 1990 graduate of California State University, San Bernardino, where he earned his B.A. degree in marketing, Ridder joined the Los Angeles Lakers’ public relations department as an intern prior to the 1990-91 season. He was promoted to assistant public relations director in June of 1993 and spent the following six seasons in that capacity with the Lakers. She finished in first place in the fourth heat of the first round (10.6 seconds); and in fourth place in the first semifinals (10.8 seconds). At Age 15, Bonds proved to be the best West Coast junior sprint champion, and then dominating the 50-yard dash nationally. She is listed on the All-American Women's Track and Fields teams. In 1963, Bonds won the 80-meter hurdles at the Outdoor Championships held in Dayton, Ohio and qualified to represent the U.S. in the Olympics that summer. She dominated her event in the United States, and threatened an upset in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics when she pulled a muscle and finished last in the finals. In 1965, Bonds, although plaqued with injuries, she mastered the 100-meters event and managed to run an outstanding personal best of 13.9 seconds, finishing second at the Outdoors National Championship to her arch rival Sherrie Sherrard. What are the moral and legal implications of football in the age of concussion?  Recent studies have shown that developing brains of young children are especially susceptible to damage from brain injuries caused by concussions.” Holder of a master’s degree in psychology, Miller is the managing director of the Seattle-based Brain Injury Resource Center, a non-profit clearinghouse operated by brain-injury activists since 1985. Providing a treasure-trove of information on the subject, the Center is manned by consultants that include neuropsychologists, lawyers and individuals suffering from TBI. In the mid-1980s she authored the book “From the Ashes” -- a highly acclaimed work on head trauma and its long-term effects. In addition, he has written 11 books, including two which will be published in 2015. “Forgotten 49ers: The Dark Days before the Dynasty” deals with the beginning of the San Francisco 49ers, and their early, mostly disappointing years before the franchise became a dynasty in the 1980s under Bill Walsh. There has been no book on the 49ers like this book, as it includes interviews with 49er players from as far back as the 1940s, including two Original 49ers in 1946. This book, published by The Kent State University Press, has be released. Newhouse’s second book, as yet untitled, is a Hoosiers-like story involving former Cal basketball coach Lou Campaneili’s previous job at James Madison University in Virginia. George F. Thompson Publishing will release this book mid-fall. Newhouse grew up in Menlo Park, California, and held the shot put record at Menlo-Atherton High School. After four years in the United States Air Force, during which time he entered the field of journalism on assignment in France, he was graduated from San Jose State University in 1964. That same year he began working for the Oakland Tribune, from which he retired in November 2011. For nearly five years in the 1980s, he hosted a radio sports talk show in San Francisco. He has appeared on numerous television sports documentaries. He had received national and local awards for his writings and commentaries, and was honored by the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame in Oakland in 2014. Though 76, he isn't slowing down; he has other book projects ahead. Paul established OCCUR, a social activist organization that fought for jobs on state highway projects. Paul went to jail protesting the non-hiring of Blacks. He also went to jail demanding the Oakland Public Schools hire a black superintendent, which it eventually did, Marcus Foster (assassinated by the SLA) and later hired Dr. Ruth Love. Paul worked at the Oakland Post, Oakland Tribune and served on the School Board. She became a traumatic brain injury (TBI) Advocate more than thirty years ago following a motor vehicle collision that left her with permanent impairments from a moderate TBI.  Back then there was very little information of any type on concussion, and the existing literature typically blamed the patient for the appearance of the symptoms of what is now known as post-concussion syndrome. Fortunately, her academic training in research methodology enabled her to spot the flaws in such reasoning.  She took what she learned and put it into a self-advocacy guide on brain injury. She titled the book, FROM THE ASHES, because she felt that it reflected the destructive effects of brain injury in her life. Shortly after its publication she was recruited by the American Academy of Neurology to help them redesigned their guidelines for diagnosing and treating concussion in sports.   Realizing the vastness of the problem of brain injury and the lack of resources and awareness she decided to found a non-profit organization to address brain injury from the survivor’s perspective. There were few blacks working in the industry then, and she continued her career at Allegheny Airlines (now U.S. Air). Her position at Allegheny was Director of Convention Services. She was named official travel coordinator of the Church of God in Christ in 1968.  She started her first travel agency in 1978 in her beloved Oakland, Calif., and quickly became known as the travel agent to the stars.  She booked travel for the late Alex Haley,  Earl Fatha Hines, Dr. Benjamin Hooks, and Bishop Walter Hawkins, to name a few. She served as official travel agent for "Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame" and became personal travel agent for the late Robert Hooks, Vonetta McGee, Whitman Mayo and many other stars. In the late 90's, McCree had the golden opportunity to book travel for the radiology department of UCSF San Francisco to all of their training conferences in the US and abroad. When the corporate account was removed, Dr. Roy Filly, Drs. Between 1969 and 1979, Jerri was host of a number of television programs in San Francisco which focused on community issues at KEMO, KBHK, KGO, and KQED (where she also served on the board). Jerri became the first black woman to host a national talk show, Turnabout, which was produced at the San Francisco public television station KQED and broadcast on 148 stations throughout the country.  Jerri was comfortable on camera, and comfortable interviewing superstars such as Shirley MacLaine, Sammy Davis, Jr., Rock Hudson, and others. Her struggle with her weight began at the age of 14, and she went on my 1st "diet" at 15. This is where the cycle of yoyo dieting began. Going from one fad diet to the next, she's managed to lose 30 to 80 pounds at least 5 times since the age of 15, only to gain it all back plus additional pounds each time. It didn't occur to her the damage this yoyo dieting was doing to her metabolism and self esteem until a routine doctor's visit revealed she weighed 341 lbs., and her blood pressure was out of control! During the visit, the Dr. said "You need to lose at least 160 lbs. to get to a healthy weight and control your blood pressure." She committed to an eating plan and eliminated sodas." I decided to begin an exercise routine, which my doctor encouraged to assist in weight loss and muscle tone. My workout consisted of walking for 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Then, I slowly increased my workout to 45 - 60 minutes per day, adding strength training and kickboxing as my weight loss increased and I became more confident". He had 23 career interceptions in his college career ranking him 7th in NCAA history. He was a three-time All-America selection, and was named a consensus first team All-American in 1978. Jeff was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1979.  He led the team with six interceptions his first year and was named to several all-rookie teams. In 1980 Jeff started the season in dramatic fashion by intercepting three passes against the Miami Dolphins - helping the Bills win the game and end the longest losing streak in NFL history (20 games).  The following Sunday, Jeff intercepted a pass and took it for a touchdown to help the Bills defeat the New York Jets. Jeff was leading the NFL in interceptions (5) in 1980 when he injured his knee in a game against the San Diego Chargers. After several knee surgeries, including a total reconstruction of his right knee, Jeff retired in 1985 and has lived in Buffalo ever since. He is married to Joyce Wilson-Nixon and together they have 5 children; Charles, Damien, Libran, Jena and Jeff.  He is currently the Youth Service Director for the Buffalo Employment and Training Center. He has been a tireless advocate for retired players and has worked as the official blogger for the NFL Alumni Association and the Fourth and Goal Foundation.
