This is the season for sports! The baseball season is underway and you can bet that some motivational speaker—or maybe your boss—will soon go into a lengthy discourse about how business is just like sports. There’s competition. There’s teamwork. Let’s get out there and give it our all! But business at most companies is emphatically not just like sports, which is why so many employees roll their eyes whenever they hear the analogy.
There’s another disconnect as well. In sports, it’s the players who matter most. They’re the ones who are carrying the ball or going up to the plate. In business, it’s just the opposite. There, it’s the bosses who see themselves as most important and who make all the big decisions. Is this you?
