In the first I explore students science knowledge as a factor that influences career decisions. In the second line of scholarship I explore racism in student teacher interactions to determine the degree to which race bias inhibits African Americans from pursuing science and science-related careers. The third and most central line of scholarship is educational praxis. Herein I work to use science education as a tool for improving the African American community." KRISTEN BURASShow overview: An Interview with Dr. Kristen Buras By now, you are aware of the New Orleans education story that occurred after the Katrina Hurricane.  What you probably don't know, are the facts as recorded by researchers on the impact of charter schools on a community of color.  Dr. Kristen Buras h as written several books and articles on corporate education reform, a term that many researchers take offense to and have named it slave market reform. NCEBC wants to welcome the full village to question, understand, and ask questions, about governance, educational policy, finances, resources and the basic democratic principles of equity, fairness and justice.  It is important (if not vital) that we have conversations to continue to dispel the myth that black children are incapable of achieving high test scores, therefore public schools are incapable of providing quality education. He inspires and mobilizes all over the country, speaking in high schools, colleges, prisons, churches, mosques and community centers. His work of helping The Hon. Min. Louis Farrakhan, inspired his teacher to give him the name ‘Nuri’ which comes from the attribute of Allah(God) Al-Nur, meaning “The Light.”  With anticipation, steely determination and focus by activists, organizers and Nation of Islam Believers around the country—led by the tireless work and unceasing travel, vision and determination of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan—mobilizing for “Justice Or Else!”, the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March, was intense. Plans for the gathering started after an April announcement by Min. Farrakhan that it was time to return to Washington, D.C. Yet in a few months, with no corporate sponsors, no huge national political backers, few establishment endorsements, and no mainstream media help, the U.S. Capitol and down the National Mall Oct. 10 were filled with throngs of people. They were drawn by a call to stand against pervasive racism and injustice with the invitation extended to Native Americans, Latinos, veterans and women to stand against oppression. Urban News Service put the number at hundreds of thousands and some estimated a million people and upwards. With substantial construction underway on the National Mall there was spillover onto side streets. It was an incredible gathering that was peaceful, loving and the beginning of a movement. . The challenge is compounded in urban schools where higher proportions of underprepared minority students are in classrooms with teachers who find it difficult to not only create bonds but also in packaging pedagogy in relevant, interesting, and meaningful ways. Though many teachers can temporarily tap students’ interests or episodically engage students in a portion of a lesson, the ability to create and sustain an engaging educational practice remains largely elusive." 01:03:00NCEBC Talk RadionoK-12 Pedagogy,Jelani Jabari,NCEBCTalkRadioJoin NCEBCTalkRadio hosts in an engaging conversation with, Dr. Jelani Jabari - Accomplished Educator, Author, and 2013 NCEBC Featured Workshop Presenter.  "OA Conversation With Dr. Carol D. Lee: Positives of African-Centered EducationIn Chicago 1969, Lee and her husband helped to found the Institute of Positive Education. This community-based, African-centered organization sponsored seminars on issues with which the black community wrestled, and it held classes, ran a food co-op and farm, and published a magazine and pamphlets. In 1972, under Lee’s direction, the institute even began its own school, New Concept Development Center, which started as a Saturday program and expanded into a full-fledged school by 1974. Both the institute and New Concept Development Center still operate today, not to mention the three charter schools in Chicago that Lee also cofounded: the Betty Shabazz International Charter School, the Barbara A. Sizemore Academy, and the DuSable Leadership Academy. African-centered schools, such as New Concept and the Betty Shabazz International Charter School campuses, take an expansive view of cultures, Lee says. Lee received her PhD in education from the University of Chicago in 1991 and currently is a professor in the Learning Sciences Program of the School of Education and Social Policy with a joint appointment in African American studies, both at Northwestern University. She is also well known for her “cultural modeling” theory, which provides a framework for the design of instruction in ways that leverage everyday knowledge of youth, especially youth of color, to support discipline specific learning. One goal is to use the everyday knowledge of these students to teach vital concepts. 01:01:00NCEBC Talk RadionoDr. Carol Lee,African-centered EducationIn Chicago 1969, Lee and her husband helped to found the Institute of Positive Education. The Black Star Project operates with a belief in the strength of parental and community involvement in education to eliminate the racial academic achievement gap. Better parents produce better communities, better schools and better students! Mr. Jackson's voice is prolific and powerful in its advocacy for African American student’s achievement in school.  He states, "It is not income, race, language barriers, cultural background, education level of parents or social status, but the extent to which a student’s family is able to create a home environment that encourages learning; express high and realistic academic achievement expectations for their children; and become involved in productive ways in their child’s education at school, at home and in the community. Dr. William Barber's "Building A Movement from the Ground Up" Workshop at the Jubilee Celebration in Selma, AL Monday March 10 @ 10 AM on NCEBCTalkRadio Rev. Dr. William Barber is leading a growing movement called the Moral Monday Movement in North Carolina that has now spread to several southern states. From the moral framework of the scriptures and state constitutions, the Moral Movement is an indigenously-led, state-based, state government – focused, deeply moral, deeply constitutional, anti-racist, anti-poverty, pro-justice, pro-labor, transformative, fusion movement.    Hundreds of thousands of people have fused together a coalition of goodwill, a nonviolent volunteer army of love, to oppose state legislature’s heartless, ideologically driven agendas. The movement is based in a southern context that takes seriously the issue of race.  As a movement born in the south, the Moral Monday Movement is rightfully aligned with the values of anti-racism and anti-poverty.  Rooted in hope (not fear) the Moral Movement is fighting for: Pro-labor, anti-poverty policies that insure economic sustainability;Well-funded, quality public education for all;Health care access and environmental justice across all the state's communities;Equality in the criminal justice system and ensure equality under the law for every person, regardless of race, class, creed, documentation or sexual preference;Protect and expand voting rights for people of color, women, immigrants, the elderly and students to safeguard fair democratic representation. The voices in the Moral Movement are of a diverse (Young, Old, White, Black, Latino, LGBT, Rich and Poor) people concerned with state laws that restrict, punish and disenfranchise its citizens. 01:10:00NCEBC Talk RadionoMoral Monday Movement,Jubilee Celebration,Selma,Alabama,NCEBCNCEBCTalkRadio Recording Live from Rev. The declaration to elevate this discussion to a national level is welcomed with exuberance. NCEBC continues to address the areas research identifies as correlates with school failure. We collaborate with stakeholders, and maintain a growing partnership with faith-based institutions, school districts, and community centers, to establish Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Centers.  Currently there are 17 Literacy Centers operating in 6 states.  NCEBC provides a challenging and culturally relevant curriculum for grades preK-6,that is in alignment with common core standards, and a strong focus on identity development.  Pre and post reading assessments are given to students enrolled in our school-based centers, in addition all students receive three age-appropriate books a year, for their personal library.  We encourage the incorporation of technology to under-grid instruction in our Literacy Centers.    01:01:00NCEBC Talk RadionoNCEBCTalkRadio,My Brothers Keeper,Cradle to PrisonChanging the "Cradle to Prison" Pipeline to "Cradle to Career" NCEBCTalkRadio with special guest: Mr. David Johns, Executive Director of White House Initiative"Do Black Kids Behave Worse?" Black students and exclusionary disciplineResearch over the last 40 years has consistently documented that Black students are much more likely than other students to be suspended out of school, expelled, and subject to corporal punishment.  But why?  Two commonly mentioned explanatory reasons provided are (a) maybe its because Black students misbehave more, and/or (b) its not really race, but rather the overlap of race and poverty. This show will explore what the evidence says about these two and other reasons for why Black students are removed from school for disciplinary reasons at very high rates. M. The challenge is compounded in urban schools where higher proportions of underprepared minority students are in classrooms with teachers who find it difficult to not only create bonds but also in packaging pedagogy in relevant, interesting, and meaningful ways. Though many teachers can temporarily tap students’ interests or episodically engage students in a portion of a lesson, the ability to create and sustain an engaging educational practice remains largely elusive." A Conversation With Dr. Carol D. Lee: What Are The Positives of An African-Centered Education? In Chicago 1969, Lee and her husband helped to found the Institute of Positive Education. 01:01:00NCEBC Talk RadionoCulturally Responsive Teaching,Urban Education,National Council on Educating Black Children,Dr Carol D Lee,African-Centered EducationA Conversation With Dr. Carol D. " Phillip Jackson is on a mission to re-popularize academic success among young Black people through a consciousness raising campaign illustrated in the play "Educate or Die"(TM) performed in Middle and High Schools. 01:00:00NCEBC Talk RadionoUrban Education,Community Leadership,National Council on Educating Black Children,21st Century Education,The Black Star ProjectFounded by Phillip Jackson in 1996, The Black Star Project is an educational reform organization focused  on eliminating the racial academic achievement gap byEducational Inequality and America’s Future: What Must We Dohttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/ncebctalkradio/2013/02/18/dr-linda-darling-hammondEducationhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/ncebctalkradio/2013/02/18/dr-linda-darling-hammond/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/ncebctalkradio/2013/02/18/dr-linda-darling-hammondMon, 18 Feb 2013 15:00:00 GMTEducational Inequality and America’s Future: What Must We DoEducational Inequality and America’s Future: What Must Be Done? This student population had low graduation rates and high rates of placement in special education classes.  Herein lays the spark from which the mission COSEBOC (Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color) was ignited.  COSEBOC believes that the school leader is the critical leverage point for changing the schooling experience of male students of color. School leaders set the vision, hire and supervise, allocate resources, provide conditions for ongoing professional development and create a learning community. Effective school leaders mobilize a community of educators and allies and they build “Coalitions of the Willing” to change the directionality of its community schools. Paraphrasing NCEBC Founder and a great mentor to many, the late Dr. Asa Hilliard: “How do we gain sufficient influence and leverage to change the academic and life trajectory pathways for our children? How can research and evaluation be used to alter the challenges students challenged by poverty and racism continue to face, re-frame the problem and guide us to valid solutions?”  Tune in to NCEBCTalkRadio to hear COSEBOC Executive Director Mr. Ron Walker answer these questions. He will interviewed by NCEBCTalkRadio hosts, Drs. Eric J.
