Thompson was a standout at Minnesota from 1986-1989. In four seasons in Minneapolis, Thompson recorded 4,518 rushing yards averaging 5.0 yards per carry with 40 touchdowns. He burst onto the scene leading the Big 10 in rushing in 1986 with 1,240 rushing yards and was named Big 10 freshman of the year.
Thompson recorded 47 receptions with 337 receiving yards for Minnesota with 3 touchdowns.
He was the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and recorded 1,641 yards in his NFL career with 7 touchdowns. He also had 41 receptions for 330 yards and 1 touchdown.
