Tonight's special guest is Robert Cannata from New York City, an attorney with Cannata Law, who has alerted us to that there have been some recent developments with the Boys Scouts bankruptcy that affect sex abuse claims nationwide. He'll be joined by the principal of the firm, Gregory Cannata. Gregory has been a practicing NYC attorney for 41 years. He began his career with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted many crimes, including sex crimes against children and adults, weapons, robberies, and homicides. After the DA’s Office, he transitioned to civil law, where he represents a wide range of plaintiffs injured by the acts of others. These cases include children sexually abused in foster care, school, and church settings, adults abused by medical practitioners, and adult survivors of child sexual abuse. Rob says, "We’d like to update you and can draft something for you to disseminate to your members." On February 18, 2020, the Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy. Recently, the bankruptcy court set a deadline by which all survivors of child sexual abuse by a Boy Scouts volunteer or employee must file a claim with the bankruptcy court: November 16, 2020. This applies to any former boy scout who was sexually abuse in the entire country, not just in New York. So it’s very important for any former scout who is seeking compensation. Rob notes, "We want to get the word out to your members, as November 16 is only five months away and it takes time to complete the claims."
