It's time to begin the "Beyond the Arm" series, in which I discuss the traits Patrick Mahomes demonstrates that make me believe he'll succeed in 2018 that DON'T include arm strength. This episode focuses on eye level and pocket presence, two intertwined traits that separate decent quarterbacks from good ones. After that, I talk about the move to The Athletic, what we'll be doing there, and what prompted me to move from a place I love so much. It's an exciting time! Finally, of course, we close out with a ton of mailbag questions ranging from parental advice to whether I think the running back group will consist of Kareem Hunt and all the Williamses.   It's a good week to be a Chiefs fan.  00:45:00RealMNchiefsfannoA discussion of Patrick Mahomes' strengths beyond the arm, why I'm not at The Athletic, and taking a bunch of mailbag questions68da0f69-07c3-47bb-91d9-efaf3619a705Episode 40: Steven Nelson film review, NFL Draft talk, mailbag!http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/04/24/episode-40-steven-nelson-film-review-nfl-draft-talk-mailbagFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/04/24/episode-40-steven-nelson-film-review-nfl-draft-talk-mailbag/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/04/24/episode-40-steven-nelson-film-review-nfl-draft-talk-mailbagTue, 24 Apr 2018 11:00:00 GMTEpisode 40: Steven Nelson film review, NFL Draft talk, mailbag! On the show:  2:20 - Steven Nelson film review from 2017, with some thoughts on the corner group as a whole; 7:20- What I would do in the draft if I were Brett Veach; 16:30 - Mailbag 00:35:00RealMNchiefsfannoNFL,Chiefs,Kansas City,Arrowhead,Arrowhead PrideSeth discusses CB Steven Nelson's film, and the NFL Draft is upon us!Episode 39: The Dangers of Box Score Analysis, Part 2http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/04/16/episode-39-the-dangers-of-box-score-analysis-part-2Footballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/04/16/episode-39-the-dangers-of-box-score-analysis-part-2/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/04/16/episode-39-the-dangers-of-box-score-analysis-part-2Mon, 16 Apr 2018 19:00:00 GMTEpisode 39: The Dangers of Box Score Analysis, Part 2Thanks to Jon Ledyard for chipping in to help explain the issues with box score analysis and how we can fight it.? Using what amounts to fantasy football stats (yards and touchdowns) or even slightly more in-depth stats like completion percentage or quarterback rating is a wildly inaccurate way to gauge an individual quarterback. I discuss what you miss when you limit yourself to basic stats, what are some better stats to look at if you don't have time to review film, and a few things to watch for in the broadcast to gauge a quarterback. I receive help from Mark Schofield, the best quarterback analyst out there, as he lays out some great tips on properly analyzing quarterbacks.  If you listen to only one thing I ever create, this is it.  00:39:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,quarterbacksI discuss the problem with using basic stats to gauge the NFL's most important position, with some help from Mark SchofieldEpisode 32: Marcus Peters Trade: What Happened and What Now?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/02/26/episode-32-marcus-peters-trade-what-happened-and-what-nowFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/02/26/episode-32-marcus-peters-trade-what-happened-and-what-now/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/02/26/episode-32-marcus-peters-trade-what-happened-and-what-nowMon, 26 Feb 2018 00:00:00 GMTEpisode 32: Marcus Peters Trade: What Happened and What Now?Another emergency episode of the Chief in the North, this time to discuss the stunning trade of All Pro cornerback Marcus Peters, a move that floored an entire fanbase. I spend time talking about what little information has filtered out to me and why I believe the Chiefs decided to make such a... questionable move. This includes an oddity for me, rumors from the "inside." Using what I've heard and what others have heard, I try to piece together a sensible theory as to how this happened. After that, it's time to move on, and I discuss what the defense may look like next year and how Brett Veach may try to compensate for such a huge loss to the defense.  00:29:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,Kansas City,Marcus PetersI discuss the Chiefs trading Marcus Peters, how it may have happened and where the Chiefs go from hereEpisode 31: Derrick Johnson is Out: His Legacy and The Road Aheadhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/02/14/episode-31-derrick-johnson-is-out-his-legacy-and-the-road-aheadFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/02/14/episode-31-derrick-johnson-is-out-his-legacy-and-the-road-ahead/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2018/02/14/episode-31-derrick-johnson-is-out-his-legacy-and-the-road-aheadWed, 14 Feb 2018 21:30:00 GMTEpisode 31: Derrick Johnson is Out: His Legacy and The Road AheadIn an emergency edition of the Chief in the North, I discuss one of my all-time favorite players no longer being part of the Chiefs. Derrick Johnson is an incredible player and has been part of my life for 13 years, since the day I screamed "YES" at my TV when the Chiefs drafted him. Fortunately, given the current talent on the roster that task isn't quite as daunting as you'd think. I discuss Reid's decision to hang on to Bob Sutton and how that affects my plans for this offseason. After that, I discuss why my primary focus is on the defense. Then it's time to get into the tough talk of salary cap savings and who needs to be cut, followed by a discussion on what Chiefs free agents should be retained. Finally, I close with a discussion as to how the Chiefs should approach defensive free agency: namely, aggressively, with multiple big signings. More importantly, what it did NOT tell us about the Chiefs. I focus on Andy Reid's playcalling to a large extent, given the huge number of incorrect narratives that are floating around about that loss. After that, it's an extensive discussion as to why it's time to move on from Alex and hand the reins over to Patrick Mahomes. They even got to watch him attempt (and succeed at) a game-winning drive in the 4th quarter.  In this episode, I dive deep into Mahomes' film against the Broncos and explain how he impressed me even more than I'd hoped in the 3 areas that matter to me the most: accuracy, pocket presence and progressions). I also take on some false narratives that have sprung from that game. After that, I take Chiefs vs Titans, the various matchups involved, and why I feel like I'm playing with house money at this point. I close with a lot of great mailbag questions from you fine people. There are 2 main topics of discussion. First, I discuss my recent article on Arrowhead Pride and Tyreek Hill's ascension to elite wide receiver in his first full year at the position. In particular, I take on some of the more common arguments people make against it, and why they're wrong. Next, it's time to talk Mahomes. He'll be starting against the Broncos, and I want to give fans some things to look for when trying to gauge how well Mahomes played. I go through the most important traits in a quarterback, and how someone can watch for them while separating the QB's performance from the team.  As always, we close with mailbag questions. 00:45:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,MahomesI go in depth as to what Tyreek Hill is already an elite receiver, what to watch for when Mahomes starts, and mailbag questionsEpisode 25: Breaking Down the OL, the Charger Beating, and Mailbag Questionshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/20/episode-25-breaking-down-the-ol-the-charger-beating-and-mailbag-questionsFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/20/episode-25-breaking-down-the-ol-the-charger-beating-and-mailbag-questions/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/20/episode-25-breaking-down-the-ol-the-charger-beating-and-mailbag-questionsWed, 20 Dec 2017 17:30:00 GMTEpisode 25: Breaking Down the OL, the Charger Beating, and Mailbag QuestionsIn Episode 25, it's a good week to be a Chiefs fan.  I've reviewed the film against the Chargers and discuss at length the different looks the defense showed, including a greater variety of formations and more aggressive blitzing, as well as improved coverage. Those differences, as well as the offense's renewed commitment to the run, change the conversation for the Chiefs moving forward from "dead in the water" to "it could happen... I think." I then discuss what I saw reviewing all 5 of the offensive linemen against the Chargers, with an in-depth look at Zach Fulton's work at center, which has been very good as of late. Finally, it's mailbag time, with over a dozen mailbag questions tackled.  00:51:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,Football,playoffsI discuss what the offense and defense showed against the Chargers, current expectations for the team, and moreEpisode 24: Pass Rush Improves, Matt Nagy Effect, Kareem Hunt, and Mailbaghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/14/episode-24-pass-rush-improves-matt-nagy-effect-kareem-hunt-and-mailbagFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/14/episode-24-pass-rush-improves-matt-nagy-effect-kareem-hunt-and-mailbag/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/14/episode-24-pass-rush-improves-matt-nagy-effect-kareem-hunt-and-mailbagThu, 14 Dec 2017 18:00:00 GMTEpisode 24: Pass Rush Improves, Matt Nagy Effect, Kareem Hunt, and MailbagThe Chiefs defense looked quite different against the Raiders than it has in some time, especially the pass rush. In this episode, after some discussion of the offensive changes under Matt Nagy (almost all of them subtle and for the better), I take a look at what the defense was doing differently against Oakland this time around to get such better results. In particular, I focus on the pass rush and the secondary, trying to figure out if what we saw Sunday is repeatable. I also discuss Kareem Hunt's revival, as the offensive line finally opened up some holes.  I close with as many mailbag questions as humanly possible in a single segment (I didn't keep count, but I think it was roughly a billion).  00:51:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,football,NFLI take an in-depth look at the improvements against Oakland by the defense, as well as the job Matt Nagy has done and lots of mailbag questionsEpisode 23: Marcus Peters and 3rd Down Defensehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/08/episode-23-marcus-peters-and-3rd-down-defenseFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/08/episode-23-marcus-peters-and-3rd-down-defense/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/12/08/episode-23-marcus-peters-and-3rd-down-defenseFri, 08 Dec 2017 11:30:00 GMTEpisode 23: Marcus Peters and 3rd Down DefenseIn something of a special edition of the Chief in the North, I try to unpack what has happened between the Chiefs and Marcus Peters, one of the most talented players on the team. I try to approach the issue from all sides, trying to figure out how we got here and what exactly is going on. I also take on some myths about Peters and discuss why the conversation surrounding him is bothering me so much. Before that, I talk about Alex Smith against the Jets and the unusual (for the Chiefs) vertical-oriented game plan we saw. Is that what the offense will look like moving forward? I certainly hope so. Then it's time for an in-depth discussion about the 3rd down defense for the Chiefs: what really IS going wrong, and what isn't? After going back and watching the snaps, I've found that a lot of narratives I'm hearing aren't entirely accurate. We then close out with a rapid-fire mailbag. 00:49:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,Marcus Peters,Alex SmithI take a look at the Marcus Peters issue from all angles, as well as discuss what I found watching every defensive 3rd down vs the JetsEpisode 22: It's Time for Patrick Mahomeshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/28/episode-22-its-time-for-patrick-mahomesFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/28/episode-22-its-time-for-patrick-mahomes/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/28/episode-22-its-time-for-patrick-mahomesTue, 28 Nov 2017 16:30:00 GMTEpisode 22: It's Time for Patrick MahomesIt's time to take on the arguments against starting Patrick Mahomes. Alex Smith and the offense are completely floundering, unable to beat simple zone defenses. Yet people continue to insist things like starting Mahomes is "too risky" or that there's no way he's ready to run Andy Reid's offense. In this episode, after a brief discussion of the Chiefs/Bills game, Reggie Ragland's big day, and adjusting our expectations for this season, I take on the 9 most common objections people make to starting Patrick Mahomes and, one by one, explain why they don't really make that much sense given how the season has played out. I then discuss the ONLY legitimate reason to keep Mahomes on the bench, and close out with some mailbag questions.  00:51:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,Patrick Mahomes,Alex Smith, footballDiscussing the Chiefs/Bills game, Reggie Ragland, and taking on arguments against giving Patrick Mahomes a shotEpisode 21: Chiefs Disappoint and Starting to Start the Mahomes Conversationhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/22/episode-21-chiefs-disappoint-and-starting-to-start-the-mahomes-conversationFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/22/episode-21-chiefs-disappoint-and-starting-to-start-the-mahomes-conversation/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/22/episode-21-chiefs-disappoint-and-starting-to-start-the-mahomes-conversationWed, 22 Nov 2017 17:00:00 GMTEpisode 21: Chiefs Disappoint and Starting to Start the Mahomes ConversationI sit in a state of utter shock that the Chiefs were so thoroughly inept against a bad team, which eventually transforms into ranting about some of the very basic failures we saw against the Giants. From failing to beat fairly basic zone coverage, Alex Smith underperforming again, to the offensive line playing badly, the entire game was a disaster that forces us to examine what this year's Chiefs really are.  Then... it's time to have a real conversation about having a conversation. After several weeks of people begging me to talk about Patrick Mahomes, I dive in-depth about Alex's struggles, what the goals should be for this season, and whether it's time to at least start having a conversation about having a conversation when it comes to Mahomes.  I close out with trying to find some hope in the improved defensive play, particularly from Reggie Ragland, and take some mailbag questions on my way out there door. Included in those questions are some thoughts about whether players can show frustration with fans during tough times.  It's not a great week to be a Chiefs fan, but we love them anyways. 00:47:00RealMNchiefsfannoI examine the reasons the Chiefs lost to the Giants, Alex Smith's recent struggles, and start asking "the question"Episode 20: Sam Mellinger and I Solve all the Problemshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/15/episode-20-sam-mellinger-and-i-solve-all-the-problemsFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/15/episode-20-sam-mellinger-and-i-solve-all-the-problems/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/15/episode-20-sam-mellinger-and-i-solve-all-the-problemsWed, 15 Nov 2017 05:30:00 GMTEpisode 20: Sam Mellinger and I Solve all the Problems20 episodes of the Chief in the North is cause for celebration! And what better way than to have friend of the show Sam Mellinger of the KC Star on to trade hot takes? Sam and I are self-proclaimed experts in having opinions, and we talk about all aspects of the Chiefs halfway (well, kind of halfway) through the season, including: -The best surprise and worst surprise of 2017. -Where we're at with Alex Smith and how we think he'll do moving forward. -Whether the run defense can be fixed... and what does "fixed" really mean? -The new reality of Derrick Johnson. -1 change we'd make to the Chiefs moving forward. -Justin Houston and his man-beastiness, and why it sems like so many are ignoring it. -BUT WHAT ABOUT PATRICK MAHOMES???? -And we close out with a mailbag segment. 00:56:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,Alex Smith,Kansas CityIn a special guest episode, Sam Mellinger of the KC Star and I talk all things Chiefs, leaving no stone unturnedEpisode 19: Chiefs Switch up Run Defense, Alex vs Dallas, Mailbaghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/09/episode-19-chiefs-switch-up-run-defense-alex-vs-dallas-mailbagFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/09/episode-19-chiefs-switch-up-run-defense-alex-vs-dallas-mailbag/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/09/episode-19-chiefs-switch-up-run-defense-alex-vs-dallas-mailbagThu, 09 Nov 2017 12:30:00 GMTEpisode 19: Chiefs Switch up Run Defense, Alex vs Dallas, MailbagEpisode 19 is another deep dive into the film as we discuss the Chiefs' loss to Dallas.  Among the many topics covered are Kareem Hunt's lack of carries, Alex Smith's struggles, and whether the pass rush was as concerning as it appeared. After that, we take an extensive look at some pretty major schematic and personnel changes Bob Sutton made to the Chiefs' defense against Dallas, and how it actually paid off in many cases. We then discuss Acker vs Mitchell and why Mitchell is the superior option. Switching to the offense, we discuss Alex Smith's struggles against the Cowboys and why he seems to have issues handling cover 2 defenses. After that, it's a BUNCH of mailbag questions covering a wide variety of topics.  00:48:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,Alex Smith,Andy ReidI take a look at how the Chiefs struggled against Dallas and some schematic changes they made for the better, plus lots moreEpisode 18: What's Wrong with the Run Defense?http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/01/episode-18-whats-wrong-with-the-run-defenseFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/01/episode-18-whats-wrong-with-the-run-defense/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/11/01/episode-18-whats-wrong-with-the-run-defenseWed, 01 Nov 2017 17:00:00 GMTEpisode 18: What's Wrong with the Run Defense? In Episode 18 of the Chief in the North, it's time to really delve into the film.  I start off discussing the Denver game and the reasons people seem more down on the Chiefs after a 10-point win than they did after their more recent losses. I then give my reasons for optimism. After that, it's time to talk about Justin Houston (for good reasons) and Marcus Peters (for not-so-good reasons), and how Houston has been absolutely stellar this season. Finally, it's time for a film session. I went back and reviewed every run of 5 yards or more by the Broncos to diagnose what went wrong. The answer? Well, it was a lot of things, both in scheme and execution. Finally, it's time we have a long discussion about Derrick Johnson and how he's playing. After all that, I close out with some mailbag questions and try to forget about all the depressing things I just discussed. It's a good day to be a Chiefs fan. 00:53:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,footballI discuss the Denver game and go in-depth on what went wrong with the run defense, as well as reasons for optimism and mailbag questionsEpisode 17: Busting Chiefs Defensive Mythshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/24/episode-17-busting-chiefs-defensive-mythsFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/24/episode-17-busting-chiefs-defensive-myths/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/24/episode-17-busting-chiefs-defensive-mythsTue, 24 Oct 2017 18:00:00 GMTEpisode 17: Busting Chiefs Defensive MythsIn Episode 17 of the Chief in the North, I decide it's time to go to the film room to examine the Chiefs' defense in their loss to the Raiders last Thursday. There are a lot of narratives flying around out there about Bob Sutton, Justin Houston, 3 man rushes, pressure on the quarterback, and a whole lot more. It seems like everyone has an opinion as to what went wrong on Thursday. But what does the film say? On closer examination, is there any accuracy to the idea that Bob Sutton's "scheme" (which means different things to different people) is ruining the defense? Are the issues the Chiefs had against the Raiders actually schematic in nature? Or is there something else going on? I reviewed the film and examined all of Oakland's successful passing plays. I also charted 3-man rushes by the Chiefs, times Houston dropped into coverage, and the pass rush in general. There's a whole lot of misinformation out there, and it's time we talk about WHY the defense was bad on Thursday (and make no mistake, it was). It's time to bust some myths. After mythbusting, I answer some mailbag questions and preview the Denver game, talking about why this is a unique chance for both the offense and defense to prove something.  Welcome to the Chief in the North, the land of 10,000 takes.  Hope you enjoy. 00:50:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,Raiders,Defense,Justin HoustonI examine the film and take on the various narratives surrounding the Chiefs defense against the RaidersEpisode 16: Chiefs Lose in A Familiar Way, Mailbaghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/16/episode-16-chiefs-lose-in-a-familiar-way-mailbagFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/16/episode-16-chiefs-lose-in-a-familiar-way-mailbag/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/16/episode-16-chiefs-lose-in-a-familiar-way-mailbagMon, 16 Oct 2017 19:00:00 GMTEpisode 16: Chiefs Lose in A Familiar Way, MailbagIn Episode 16 of the Chief in the North, I try to deal with seeing the Chiefs lose in eerily similar fashion to the Steelers. I start off discussing playcalling vs execution and why I think it's a mistake to just say "it was the playcalling" for either the offense or the defense. Then it's time to do what's necessary and talk about Alex's roughest outing of the year by far, as he crashed back to earth from his MVP-level play and, despite a late rally, wasn't able to recover. I additionally rant about failing to give the ball to Kareem Hunt, which I still don't want to think about. Then it's time to delve into the run defense and why the Chiefs seem incapable of asserting themselves against the Steelers offensive line. Game after game it's been this way, despite the Chiefs playing well against other good lines. It's baffling.  Then it's your time to sound off a bit with a ton of mailbag questions. Topics vary from Marcus Peters's recent aversion to tacking to what I expect from Demarcus Robinson moving forward.  Finally, I close out looking at the state of where the Chiefs are, what the Raiders game means, and how I think that'll go. You know what? It's still not a bad week to be a Chiefs fan.  00:51:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,Alex Smith, quarterbacks, fantasy footballI examine the different angles of the loss to the Steelers and take a ton of mailbag questionsEpisode 15: Chiefs are SB Contenders, Alex for MVP, Marcus Peters Frustratinghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/09/episode-15-chiefs-are-sb-contenders-alex-for-mvp-marcus-peters-frustratingFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/09/episode-15-chiefs-are-sb-contenders-alex-for-mvp-marcus-peters-frustrating/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/09/episode-15-chiefs-are-sb-contenders-alex-for-mvp-marcus-peters-frustratingMon, 09 Oct 2017 19:00:00 GMTEpisode 15: Chiefs are SB Contenders, Alex for MVP, Marcus Peters FrustratingIn Episode 15 of the Chief in the North, I discuss various aspects of the Chiefs big win over the Texans, delving specifically into the quarterback play of the two teams. In short, Alex is an MVP candidate and Watson's game is everything that drives me crazy about quarterback narratives. I finally tackle the Marcus Peters question in-depth, trying to figure out exactly what is going on with him and whether or not he can turn it around (on the field, strictly... well, on the sideline during the game, too). On a happier note, I look at Terrance Mitchell and the difference he's made for the Chiefs since his emergence. I then spend some time on why the Texans annoy me, particularly with regards to excuses made for what was really a dominant Chiefs with without roughly a third of their starters. I follow that up with a discussion of what makes the Chiefs a strong Super Bowl contender this season (it rhymes with "galance," which isn't actually a word). Then it's mailbag time, where I disucss Chris Conley, Justin Houston in coverage, and Bob Sutton's job this season. I close out with a preview of the Steelers game and why they scare me due to potential matchup issues.  It was another fun week to record, and another great week to be a Chiefs fan. 00:45:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,Kansas City,NFL,Alex Smith,TexansI discuss Chiefs vs Texans, why Alex's day >>> Watsons day, why I'm concerned about Marcus Peters but not Terrance Mitchell, and preview the PIT gameEpisode 14: Chiefs Road Trip Report, Reggie Ragland Reviewhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/04/episode-14-chiefs-road-trip-report-reggie-ragland-reviewFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/04/episode-14-chiefs-road-trip-report-reggie-ragland-review/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/10/04/episode-14-chiefs-road-trip-report-reggie-ragland-reviewWed, 04 Oct 2017 16:30:00 GMTEpisode 14: Chiefs Road Trip Report, Reggie Ragland ReviewIn Episode 14 of the Chief in the North, I power through a voice that is on its way to being completely lost and a cold that's incoming (products of an incredible night at Arrowhead) to talk about the Chiefs' epic (that's right, epic) win against the Redskins on Monday Night Football. I open up discussing the game itself, how the Redskins were better than I thought they would be, the atmosphere at Arrowhead, and how bleak things looked starting out. I then look at what it shows about the team to come back in that situation, and what being 4-0 really means. Then it's time to start talking about individual players. I discuss Alex Smith's clutch play down the stretch, Kareem Hunt's freakishness, and Albert Wilson's unexpected emergence as an important role player after he was finally given a role that fits his skillset. I then talk about missing the entire interior offensive line and what that might mean moving forward. Then the conversation shifts to the defense. By popular request, I re-watched every Reggie Ragland snap and spend quite a bit of time discussing the traits he demonstrated next to DJ. I then discuss Marcus Peters and the pass rush, both of which were two of the only negative things to come out of Monday night. Finally, we're on to the Texans. I talk about the budding rivalry between the two teams and fanbases and what I think of Houston overall. I discuss the pieces they have on offense and defense, how they've performed so far this year, and what I think the game against them will look like. It's a good week to be a Chiefs fan.   00:49:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,Kansas City,NFL,Alex Smith,Kareem HuntI discuss Chiefs vs Redskins, reviewing Alex, Kareem, Reggie Ragland, and more. I spend a lot of time discussing the 5 sacks Alex Smith took Sunday, and whether I viewed those as more a result of line failure, scheme failure or quarterback failure. Also, I discuss Travis Kelce's roll in the game and how I think it could well be an "in game suspension" of sorts by Andy Reid. On defense, it's all about Terrance Mitchell and Justin Houston, two players who showed up big time against the Chargers. I talk about the impact Mitchell's big game can have on future games, and how great it is to see Houston back in top-5-defensive-player form. I also very, very quickly (and only because I've had many people ask me about it) discuss my stance on bringing politics into what I do, or anything other than football.  Basically, it's a "why I choose to stick to sports" moment. Please be nice to me. I then close out with a previw of Chiefs/Redskins, discussing in particular what Washington was able to do against Oakland and why I don't feel that game is a good predictor for how Monday Night's showdown will go.  I will be at Arrowhead Monday evening. If there's anyone tailgaiting, let me know and I'll do my best to come visit, as I'd love to meet anyone crazy enough to listen to this show!   00:55:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,football,Kareem Hunt,Terrance MitchellI discuss multiple players and scheme topics in the Chiefs win over the Chargers, then preview the MNF game coming upEpisode 12: Chiefs/Eagles Review, Looking at the Ceilinghttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/09/18/episode-12-chiefseagles-review-looking-at-the-ceilingFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/09/18/episode-12-chiefseagles-review-looking-at-the-ceiling/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/09/18/episode-12-chiefseagles-review-looking-at-the-ceilingMon, 18 Sep 2017 16:30:00 GMTEpisode 12: Chiefs/Eagles Review, Looking at the CeilingIn Episode 12 of the Chief in the North, I tackle the Chiefs/Eagles game after a quick re-watch looking at certain players.  There's a lot to talk about, with an overall theme of the Chiefs sending a message to the NFL for the second week in a row, this time beating a tough, physical defense and a quarterback who played a really good game under pressure. Despite the Eagles presenting a very different matchup than the Pats, the Chiefs were able to walk away winners for the second week in a row against a good team. That's a big deal. For individual topics, I discuss how I believe Alex Smith's game againt the Eagles may well be more impressive than his gaudy stats against the Patriots, how Chris Jones and the pass rush are a menace to society, and how Kareem Hunt is completely for real (in case you doubted it). I also dive into a few tougher topics, like the offensive line coming back to earth against perhaps the toughest front seven they'll face all year, Mitch Morse being injured (NOOOOOO), and some potential concerns on special teams. Additionally, I take a long, hard look at a great player who can't seem to stop getting stupid penalties in Travis Kelce. I've officially reached the point of being fed up and concerned about when these mental lapses are going to turn around and bite the Chiefs. Finally, I discuss the upcoming Chargers game and some matchup issues they present, followed up by a conversation of where I think the Chiefs' ceiling is this year (spoiler alert: it's high).  00:57:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,Alex Smith,Justin Houston,Chris JonesDiscussing Chiefs/Eagles, including Alex Smith, Chris Jones and the pass rush, the OL, and more. After that, it's time to discuss what I saw reviewing the film of various players. We blaze through the corners (in particular Terrance Mitchell), Bennie Logan, Dee Ford, Justin Houston, Kareem Hunt, Alex Smith, and more. I'm not sure I've ever fit more information into an episode than this one. I close out by talking about the upcoming Eagles game, which should be a good test for the Chiefs' ascending offensive line and offense overall. Additionally, with the regular season now looming, it felt appropriate to answer as many mailbag questions as humanly possible in 50 minutes. The topics of the mailbag questions range from the Chiefs' chances against the Patriots on Thursday to overall season predictions, with basically everything in between.  Additionally, it's time to put some final thoughts on what Patrick Mahomes accomplished this preseason (spoiler: it's a lot), whether I think Andy Reid is making the right choice rolling with Alex Smith, and why I think it's ridiculous to say that Mahomes needs to learn the same offense Smith is running before he'll be "ready" to go. After that, I take an in-depth look at the Chiefs' disappointing performance against the Seahawks, having reviewed the film several times over to get a sense of whether the sky is really falling or not. Of particular focus: -Offensive line play, particularly run blocking -The role drops and penalties played in an uncharacteristically sloppy performance -The wildly vanilla nature of Andy Reid and Bob Sutton's gameplan -The defensive line and run defense as a whole After that, it's a detailed discussion on the impact of Spencer Ware's injury and what traits Kareem Hunt possesses to give us hope. Finally, I close with some discussion of clear starter (based on what Andy Reid has said and done) Alex Smith and rookie Patrick Mahomes, and what their tape against Seattle looked like upon review. I also discuss the reasons I'm "OK but not thrilled" with Alex starting this year, and the differences between the two of them in how they perform when things go wrong around them.  It's a lot to take in, but a roaring good time if you ask me. 00:51:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,Reggie Ragland,Patrick Mahomes,Kareem HuntI take a look at why the Chiefs traded for Reggie Ragland, then spend time discussing the Chiefs' performance against the Seahawks and why it's going to be OKEpisode 8: Reviewing Preseason Game 2http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/08/21/episode-8-reviewing-preseason-game-2Footballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/08/21/episode-8-reviewing-preseason-game-2/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/08/21/episode-8-reviewing-preseason-game-2Mon, 21 Aug 2017 12:30:00 GMTEpisode 8: Reviewing Preseason Game 2In Episode 9 of the Chief in the North, we look back to Saturday's game against the Bengals. I examine the common arguments made against Mahomes starting early to see if they have merit based on what we currently know about Mahomes, then discuss what Mahomes starting may look like and the effect it could potentially have on the 2017 Chiefs and Mahomes himself. 3:55- We discuss the fact that the NFL has changed, and rookie quarterbacks come in and play solidly quite frequently in modern NFL offenses. This shifts the burden, in that someone needs to show me why Mahomes is an exception to the modern rule that talented young QB's can come in and play well right away. 7:55- Taking on some of the reasons people give as to why Mahomes can't start immediately (or why he's an exception to the new rule with QB's), including QB winz, risky decisions, footwork, and learning an NFL offense and NFL defenses. 18:04- Talking about Mahomes's ability to protect himself as a mobile quarterback. 18:55- Discussing what would change about the Chiefs' offense if Mahomes played in 2017. What would he take off the table, and what would he bring to the table? 28:15- How will Mahomes avoid mistakes at the NFL level? Will his playmaking compensate for a likely increase in INT's? 35:52- Would starting Mahomes early stunt his development? 39:30- Addressing some quick hitters: would Reid throw Mahomes in if the Chiefs start slow? Such theories include: Alex Smith, a mediocre offense, the run defense, strength of schedule, lack of playmakers, pass rush issues, cornerback starters and depth, the departure of Dontari Poe and Jeremy Maclin, and John Dorsey's firing. Obviously, anything can happen in the NFL, but I decided it was time to see if the theories people have for believing the Chiefs will have a "down" season in 2017 hold up under scrutiny, or if they fall apart when examined more closely   00:37:00RealMNchiefsfannoChiefs,NFL,AFC West,Arrowhead Pride,MNchiefsfanDiscussing the various reasons so many people believe the Chiefs will regress in 2017Episode 4: Tamba's Tweets and Inside Linebacker Film Reviewhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/07/24/episode-4-tambas-tweets-and-inside-linebacker-film-reviewFootballhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/07/24/episode-4-tambas-tweets-and-inside-linebacker-film-review/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/mnchiefsfan/2017/07/24/episode-4-tambas-tweets-and-inside-linebacker-film-reviewMon, 24 Jul 2017 12:00:00 GMTEpisode 4: Tamba's Tweets and Inside Linebacker Film ReviewIn Episode 4, we spend a little time trying to decipher exactly what Tamba Hali's recent Twitter rampage was all about.
