Meet an award-winning journalist, Pamela Newkirk, as she reveals a little-known and shameful episode in American history, when an African man was used as a human zoo exhibit—a shocking story of racial prejudice, science, and tragedy in the early years of the twentieth century in the tradition of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Devil in the White City, and Medical Apartheid.  In 1904, Ota Benga, a young Congolese “pygmy”—a person of petite stature—arrived from central Africa and was featured in an anthropology exhibit at the St. Louis World’s Fair. Two years later, the New York Zoological Gardens displayed him in its Monkey House, caging the slight 103-pound, 4-foot 11-inch tall man with an orangutan.    00:56:00Manhattan leadersatplaynopamela newkirk, ncbw, history, african, african americanan interview with the author of the book Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota BengaMedia’s Role in Misalignment of Justice: Race, Media & the Central Park Joggerhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/manhattan100leadersatplay/2015/07/21/medias-role-in-misalignment-of-justice-race-media-the-central-park-joggerEducationhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/manhattan100leadersatplay/2015/07/21/medias-role-in-misalignment-of-justice-race-media-the-central-park-jogger/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/manhattan100leadersatplay/2015/07/21/medias-role-in-misalignment-of-justice-race-media-the-central-park-joggerTue, 21 Jul 2015 23:00:00 GMTMedia’s Role in Misalignment of Justice: Race, Media & the Central Park Jogger Call in to our amazing show for LeadersatPlay on BlogTalkRadio!  Learn how race, sex and class warped the media’s coverage and contributed to unlawful convictions. Understand the story of how the media impacts verdicts. The event is named #99Seconds because every 90 seconds a woman is sexually assaulted in the U.S. and every 9 seconds a woman is battered. By combining these two statistics we are promoting the little known fact that in the United States a woman is a victim of gender-based violence every 99 seconds. #99Seconds aims to break the silence on gender-based violence and to directly tie in how domestic violence and sexual violence are normalized through modern entertainment. #99Seconds gives survivors a space to publicly reframe their experience, moving from victim to survivor and using the event as an opportunity for them to begin Redefining HERstory for themselves. (Please note that male survivors are open to participate and share their stories as well.)  Learn more http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=5khwekqab&oeidk=a07easklzs0379dd6a4   00:42:00Manhattan leadersatplaynomedia images, women of color, violence against womenTruth In Reality has created a signature event entitled “#99Seconds” that  is an event that honors the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
