We are pleased to have as this week's radio show guest, Ms. Cindy Eubanks, librarian of Chapel Hill ISD. Ms. Eubanks works with Chapel Hill's high school students, advising them of the dangers of using cell phones while driving and of the perils of drinking and driving.   Approximately 1.6 million traffic accidents happen on roads across the U.S. because people are talking on cell phones. Studies show that eight in ten Americans admit to driving while on their cell phones. A report by The Harvard Mental Health Letter found that talking on a cell phone while driving is more dangerous than talking to a passenger in the car. Researchers found that the drivers talking by cell phone were more likely to drift between lanes and miss an exit than were drivers talking to passengers. Some drivers feel that using a hands-free cell phone will make it better, but research shows otherwise. Studies show that hands-free cell phones can be just as distracting and that any type of cell phone used while driving can cause impairments similar to drunk driving.   Please join us this Friday, May 20th at 11:30 CST for the radio show. 00:30:00Longhorn Lawyernojeff weinstein, chapel hill high school, distracted driving, texting while driving, weinstein lawHigh Schools are one of the main focuses of Weinstein Law's Distracted Driving Awareness program. Text. Crash." campaign to raise awareness of the dangers associated with distracted driving and to encourage Texans to put down their cell phones while driving.  Distracted driving is becoming increasingly common and dangerous, causing traffic crashes and fatalities. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows the proportion of fatalities reportedly associated with driver distraction increased from 10 percent in 2005 to 16 percent in 2009. In fact, 20 percent of injury crashes nationally in 2009 involved reports of distracted driving.   This deadly trend is mirrored in Texas, where nearly one in four crashes involves driver distraction, according to TxDOT. In 2009 alone, over 100,000 vehicles were involved in crashes where distraction in vehicle, driver inattention or cell phone use was cited. Sadly, 408 of those crashes were fatal. Please listen in this Friday, April 15th at 11:30 a.m. CST when our radio show guest will be Ms. Tracie Mendez. Tracie is the Driver Behavior Program Manager for TxDOT. She manages the educational and enforcement  traffic safety campaigns such as Click it or Ticket; Drink. Drive. She is the President and a co-founding board member of FocusDriven. FocusDriven is the first national nonprofit organization devoted specifically to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. "On Sept. 3, 2008, after receiving a phone call offering food for the feral cats she rescued and nurtured, my mom left her home in Oklahoma City. She was driving through an intersection when a young man ran a red light and T-boned her car at 45-50 mph, which was the posted speed limit. Mom died within a couple of hours from blunt force trauma to the head, neck and chest. The young man was a sober, churchgoing 20-year-old who had never even had a speeding ticket. Visibility on the day of the crash was excellent. The cause of the crash was a tiny device that fits in your pocket: a cell phone. When the trooper asked the driver who caused the crash what color the traffic light had been, the distraught young man responded that he never saw it. The absence of skid marks at the scene indicate he never tried to stop. Our lives will never be the same because of that crash and the loss of my mom." ~Jennifer Smith ----- Jennifer and FocusDriven have worked closely with Oprah Winfrey on her No Phone Zone Campaign appearing on her first episode, 'America's New Deadly Obsession' in January of 2009. She has also appeared on Fox News, CNN, and many other major network shows including a recent appearance on "Larry King Live" and soon on 20/20 airing in April. Jennifer has also worked closely with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and the Department of Transportation in the Global Call to End Distracted Driving press conferences at the United Nations. Last May, the Hueber family packed up and moved to the home of the hamburger, knowing friendly faces and a great community would be there to greet them. The decision to move back to her home-state of Texas from Georgia to accept the position at the Chamber was an easy one for Sarah. Beginning work with only three days before the rodeo, she found herself among the bulls, broncos and mud for the first time. Sarah went right to work as the new Chamber president without missing a beat. The event was a success and she plans to make it even bigger and better this year. With a passion for service and helping hands, Sarah was employed with the United Way in Georgia before relocating to Athens last year. Even though it's been less than twelve months, she is already entrenched into the Athens community. The Huebers are members of the First United Methodist Church, where Sarah volunteers as the Children's Ministries Program Leader. She is also a Rotarian and sits on the Athens Public Education Foundation Board of Directors. Sarah, her husband Charlie and their four-year-old son Jude have settled right in to the Athens community. Jacy's mother and father, Jean and Jay Good, were killed in the accident. Jacy was in critical condition, spending four months in the hospital. The accident has left Jacy with permanent injuries. "I have to know that this accident happened to me for a reason and that my parents' deaths weren't senseless and meaningless. I discovered early in my recovery process that telling my story caused people to change their behavior. I believe my life was spared for a reason, and until families are no longer being forced through the kind of pain that mine was, I will not stop spending every free moment fighting for this cause." - Jacy Good Not only does Jacy encourage safe driving practices, she is also a vocal advocate for legislation that would prohibit distracted driving. Tina has over 20 years experience in supervising claims against drunk drivers. Tina and Jeff will be discussing why someone who is injured by a drunk driver needs to hire a lawyer. If you are involved in a car accident where you sustain an injury you will want to seriously consider hiring an experienced personal injury law firm. An auto accident lawyer can help you recover losses by negotiating with insurance claims adjusters or by taking your case to court. While you may choose to negotiate with an insurance claims adjuster yourself, remember that claims adjusters are trained to settle your claim for as little money as possible. Also, once you accept money from an insurance company, your claim is settled and there is little an attorney can do at that point to recover more money if your injuries are more extensive than you originally thought. Keep in mind that insurance claims adjusters record conversations and try to establish liability and limit damages. A seasoned injury lawyer is experienced in negotiating with insurance companies; therefore, it is best to consult a car accident lawyer early to avoid financially painful mistakes. Also, people who utilize a car accident lawyer typically receive higher settlements than people who negotiate their own claims, even after paying legal expenses.00:31:00Longhorn Lawyernodrunk driving accident lawyer, madd, driving while intoxicated, drunk driving, drunk driving accidentThis week attorney Jeff Weinstein will be speaking with Tina Wycough, Insurance Adjuster and Weinstein Law Pre-Lawsuit Case Manager.
