JD Mass was a white kid sent to a mostly black school in St. Louis, MO. His parents were determined to raise him in a diverse community where he could experience racism and cultural differences. They succeeded. JD would go on to grow, learn, and thrive in schools that were 85 to 93% black. There, he learned the value of other ethnicities and his appreciation for black culture. His parents welcomed his friends. JD was welcomed into his friends’ homes and felt more welcome in black homes than anyplace else. More welcome there than in white family homes.
JD masterfully weaves his message in his breakout book Race for What? A White Man’s Journey & Guide to Healing Racism from Within. Part memoir, part how-to, and entirely real, in it he takes readers back in time to St. Louis in the 80sand 90s growing up with a circle of creative friends and influences.

From those days he forged steel-like friendships that made him Nelly’s Business manager and spawned businesses and brands like Derrty Entertainment, Pimp Juice Energy Drink, Apple Bottom Clothing and so much more. Today his message to white people is to open our hearts and minds and ask ourselves what are we racing for?
