Fierce and Delicate - Author Renée K. Nicholson on Big Blend Radio

    in Books

On this episode of Big Blend Radio, acclaimed author, writer, and poet Renée K. Nicholson discusses her memoir, "Fierce and Delicate: Essays on Dance and Illness." Renée Nicholson’s professional training in ballet had both moments of magnificence and moments of torment, from fittings of elaborate platter tutus to strange language barriers and unrealistic expectations of the body. In "Fierce and Delicate," she looks back on the often confused and driven self she had been shaped into—always away from home, with friends who were also rivals, influenced by teachers in ways sometimes productive and at other times ordering on sadistic—and finds beauty in the small roles she performed. When, inevitably, Nicholson moved on from dancing, severed from her first love by illness, she discovered that she retained the lyricism and narrative of ballet itself as she negotiated life with rheumatoid arthritis. • Quintessential Listening: Poetry Online Radio Presents Nicole Verrone

    in Poetry

Nicole Verrone wrote Nest of Stars over six months, after a twenty-year hiatus to raise four daughters. Born in North Carolina, she spent summers on her grandparents’ dairy farm where the poetry of an uncle lost in a tragic car accident was on display. This formative event instilled the beauty and brevity of life through verse. A writer since adolescence, her first poem was published in the local newspaper in 1986. She earned a BA in English from UNC-Greensboro, taught high school literature, and currently serves on an educational team as accreditation and continuing education consultant in the healthcare industry.
Verrone lives vicariously through the accounts of adult daughters studying to become healthcare professionals and providers. Her youngest, a pre-teen, still hangs out in the nest. Verrone has been married for a long time to a fly fishing guru and her best pal. She attempts to embrace intangible gifts, fill time and space with art and music, reading and philosophy, and has an unquenchable thirst for stories and travel. Nest of Stars is her first published work.

  • Garden of Enlightenment ... Luyu Wild Dove

    in Poetry

"Poetry IS When an Emotion has Found its Thought and the Thought HAS Found Words"... Robert Frost Poetry has its own individual voice in each of us. It is the lyrics of our experiences that form and shed enlightenment in who we are. Each poem paints what is, what is missing and the desires that burn inside each of us that we crave. They are the door we open in our soul's closet taking out our hidden treasures, exposing them to the world. Trinkets, jewels of emotions of different textures, colors and strengths we place before you in poetry.
