He may have earned legions of fans as Maurice on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, but J. Anthony Brown isn’t always alert enough to acknowledge the props. “I get up at 2 a.m. to do the show from L.A. I have to leave the house by 2:30,” the comic tells Rodney Perry Live host Rodney Perry. “And you ain’t just gettin’ up. You have to be funny. It’s not like you’re making doughnuts where you have to be just awake enough to turn on the doughnut machine. You got to be up and listening. I must admit, I fell asleep a couple of times on that show. A lot of times, if you don’t hear me talkin’, I probably am asleep. I got to get my power nap.”
