BORON, Calif. — Hundreds of workers remain locked out of the world's second-largest borate mine in a contract dispute.

About 560 employees were turned away Jan. 31 from the Rio Tinto Borax mine in the Mojave Desert town of Boron. The workers have refused to approve a contract that their union claims would turn many positions into part-time jobs.
The company denies the claim but says it needs changes to compete.
Union spokesman Craig Merrilees said Tuesday that union members from around the country have been donating money and groceries to help the miners.
The mine produces borates, which are used in everything from high-definition TVs to plant food. Mine spokeswoman Susan Keefe says the mine is operating with out-of-state employees and contractors.
The mine is about 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
