On 15 April at 12noon KDSL will chat with Christine Mason. Christine Mason is the CEO of the Center for Educational Improvement, a small non-profit dedicated to leadership for 21st Century Learning.  Dr. Mason has a background in educational psychology, special education, and educational leadership, and in particular the needs and concerns of elementary school principals.  As a researcher she has developed and served as a Principal Investigator on projects focusing on student self determination, inclusion, teacher mentoring, and Transition to Teaching -- an alternative certification program.   She has also received state and local contracts for Race to the Top school improvement initiatives. From 2011-2013 Dr. Mason directed research and professional development for the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and she continues to collaborate withNAESP to develop and promote principal mentoring for 21st century learning. Throughout the years, she worked on various summer projects through the US with after school programs and summer camps geared towards children in underserved communities. In 2010 and 2011 she spent weeks in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania working with a primary school and an HIV clinic that directed her attentions towards education and job creation projects in the developing countries. She became a regular tutor in an immigrant community in her SC town and interned with KDSL during the spring and summer of 2012, where the value of education was solidified a hundredfold for her. She spent autumn of 2012 working with Light Gives Heat, a nonprofit working in job creation to an IDP community in Uganda and volunteering with preteen girls at a primary school across the street from her Jinja home. She is currently living in the DC area interning at Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, a social entrepreneurship company that gives innovators worldwide a chance to pursue their efforts in world change. The Biggest Story Problem is an independent documentary film examining the sudden drop in math scores and competency seen as students in the U.S. transition from primary to secondary schools. Scott has gained 14 years of in-classroom teaching experience at the elementary, secondary and university levels, since earning his doctoral degree in Education from the University of Northern Colorado. While teaching middle school, he developed seven story-based, in-classroom math games with historical fiction themes that became the focal point of his classroom curriculum. Scott strives to support educators and educational leadership in changing the underlying pedagogy of their student classrooms.
