This Week in Oncology with Susan Webster, BS, PT, CET

On the Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 broadcast, our special guest is cancer survivor, and cancer fitness advocate Susan Webster, BS, PT, & CET.

Susan's journey is both fascinating and insightful from the point of view of 'gaps in care' once the active treatment process is over. She describes her backgroud and introduction into cancer fitness advocacy as follows:

"I felt a lump in my right breast in 2004. The large lump was surgically removed and I was put on Tamoxifen. I was told I did not have breast cancer. Years later, in October of 2007, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, in spite of the Tamoxifen, invasive throughout my right breast. Three  lumpectomies, chemotherapy, and radiation came unexpectedly into my life soon afterwards. Dr. Laurie Frakes and Dr. Eva Lean saved my life!

I am 51 years old and I live a very active life in Carlsbad California. I taught group exercise before my diagnosis and after my treatment I wanted to further my education. I became a personal trainer through ACE and then I completed my certification as a Cancer Exercise Specialist Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine.

I Co-founded a 501(c)3 non-profit to raise money for scholarships for clients to attend a safe and effective exercise program at Tri-City Wellness Center. I continue to teach Cancer Fitness at TCWC. I have had the pleasure of working with over 100 clients that have been physician referred. It is my passion.

I love the ocean and I competed in Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club's races last year.I have two grown children, Cate, a senior at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a son Christopher who loves literature. I have been married for 27 years to Paul.
