According to published reports from WREG News Channel 3 and Think Progress Justice, 21 year old Chavis Carter was handcuffed while in the back seat of a police car when he was shot in the head. The young man was a passenger in a motor vehicle that was pulled over by officers of the Jonesboro Arkansas Police Department. The vehicle stop and search allegedly resulted in the discovery of marihuana and information that Chavis Carter was wanted on a warrant. He was searched a second time, handcuffed with his hands behind his back, and placed in the rear of the patrol car. The officers allegedly heard a thumping noise that was attributed to the handcuffed man shooting himself in the head. Although Chavis Carter’s hands were still cuffed behind his back, the police report attributed his death to a self-inflected gunshot.
