Ugh. 2 trial consultants discuss this ridiculousnessCBS's ridiculous unintended comedy/horror show 'Bull' returns after a week off -- by far the  brightest spot coming from last week's Vice Presidential Debate. This week, trial consultants Rich Matthews (Juryology) and Julie Campanini (Trial Insights) discuss episode 3, "Unambiguous." Why are we doing this? Besides being willing to endure this crap, we have an interest in at least a somewhat truthful and plausible depiction of the justice system... and CBS offers a cynical show that tells people that their justice system is rigged - or at the very least riggable - in a time when they are also being told that all the other democratic institutions are also rigged. Nonsense.  This isn't nitpicking. Fiction serves the truth just as well as non-fiction does. "Art is the lie that reveals the truth," says (supposedly) Pablo Picasso - and we agree that in order to tell a real and truthful story, it need not be perfectly accurate. But this show is a lie that just reveals crap. There is no redeeming truthful storytelling. It's just a non-stop crime spree committed by Dr. Phil's fantasy vision of himself, which would get him prison and would get every single attorney he works with disbarred. But hey, other than that... As ever, fiction is great; outright falsehood is not. And in a year in which the American public is being told that its institutions are rigged - government, financial markets, the media, elections - it is harmful that the public is now also being told that its justice system is rigged. Rigged by a smarmy, cocky, godlike consultant who single-handedly somehow has the power to empanel any jury he wants to achieve any outcome he wants, committing crimes, blowing his clients' attorney-client privilege as well as anything that would be covered by work product protections, flouting all laws of procedure, not getting the attorneys who employ him disbarred and on and on. Look, this isn't like complaining, "That TV surgeon used a clamp instead of forceps," or a fictional TV chef using a mandoline when she should be using a rasp. While annoying, those are errors, not whole-cloth falsehoods that give a recklessly false picture of the world depicted.
