Set in the isolated Appalachian town of Swan River, Atwell’s debut novel tells the story of the mysterious and terrifying wild girls, killers who menace a community.  The narrator, seventeen-year-old Kate Riordan, is torn between her desire to escape into the privileged world represented by the town’s posh boarding school and her allegiance to her hometown’s dark history.

Mary Stewart Atwell grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia.  Her short fiction has appeared in journals including Epoch and Alaska Quarterly Review, and in the anthologies Best New American Voices and Best American Mystery Stories
