This chronic disease affects some 27 million Americans, and although it is commonly simply called arthritis it's only one of over a hundred forms of arthritis. OA is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage – the part of a joint that cushions the ends of the bones and allows easy movement. As cartilage deteriorates, bones begin to rub against one another. This can cause stiffness and pain that make it difficult for you to use that joint. Osteoarthritis can also damage ligaments, menisci and muscles. Over time OA may create a need for joint replacements. There are two types of OA – primary and secondary. Primary osteoarthritis is generally associated with aging and the "wear and tear" of life. The older you are, the more likely you are to have some degree of primary osteoarthritis. However, not everyone gets it – not even the very old. That’s because OA is a disease, and not part of the normal aging process. Secondary osteoarthritis tends to develop relatively early in life, typically 10 or more years after a specific cause, such as an injury or obesity. Osteoarthritis occurs most often in knees, hips, and hands.  Other joints, particularly the shoulders, can also be affected. OA rarely affects other joints, except as a result of injury or unusual physical stress. The pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis can make it difficult to do daily activities including your job, play sports or even get around with ease. Hockey Hall of Famer, Wayne Gretsky has lived with arthritis since he was 38 and as the Arthritis Spokesperson he knows why it’s important to learn all you can about this disease, how it affects you and how to live with it – a process called self management - which Bobbie talks about in this episode. 00:28:00irwhealthclinicnoarthritis,osteoarthritis,OA,joint pain,Wayne Gretsky arthritisIMMUNE HEALTH SERIES: Arthritis If you’ve been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, or OA,  you’re not alone. One of the most chronic forms of arthritis is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). It is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body's natural defense system attacks the joints.  Early symptoms of RA include fatigue, joint pain, and stiffness. As it progresses, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms may feel like the flu, with achiness, muscle aches, and loss of appetite. The exact cause is not known, although it appears to run in some families and tends to effect women (2 to 3 times more than men) especially between the ages 40 to 60. In this episode Bobbie talks about early and effective rheumatoid arthritis treatment to enable you to improve your prognosis and  help prevent joint and bone destruction associated with RA.  Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis continues throughout your life. It includes medicine, exercise, and lifestyle changes, so getting treatment early may control the condition or keep it from getting worse.  Additionally many of the medicines used to treat rheumatoid arthritis have side effects. So it is important to have regular checkups and talk with your doctor about any problems and find a treatment option that works for you. Did you know that there are more than 100 types of arthritis?   No matter which type of arthritis you have, you need an accurate diagnosis before your medical provider can recommend a program for treatment. Next week Bobbie talks about the most well known arthritis - osteoarthritis - that is so common it will affect one in seven people in their lifetime. 00:25:00irwhealthclinicnoRheumatoid Arthritis,RA,arthritis, living with Rheumatoid Arthritis, joint painIMMUNE HEALTH SERIES: Rheumatoid Arthritis. Multiple sclerosisis an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). Almost any neurological symptom can appear with the disease, and often progresses to physical and cognitive disability.  MS can affect anyone at the most productive time in their lives, and there are numerous famous people with MS from Michelle Obama's father, to TV host Montel Williams, to actress Terri Garr of Tootsie fame, who are all raising awareness of this mysterious autoimmune disease. With 27 million people suffering that makes it the leading endocrine disorder today. Even more surprising is that it is thought that twice that number actually have the disorder but go undiagnosed because the symptoms such as tiredness, low energy, feeling blue or weight gain, are so subtle they are mistaken for other things. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland, found inside the neck near the “Adam’s apple.” The hormones produced by the thyroid, commonly called T3 and T4, control the metabolism; in other words, they coordinate how the body breaks down food and determine whether food energy is either used immediately or stored for future use. Related to the thyroid gland is the pituitary gland, located at the brain’s base. The pituitary produces a hormone that stimulates the thyroid, telling the thyroid when to produce more of its own hormones when needed by the body. Disruptions in the normal function of the thyroid are often the result of thyroid-specific diseases, such as hypothyroidsim (low thyroid hormone production), hyperthyroidism (high production), thyroid  nodules and others. Hundreds of thousands of new chemicals have been introduced into the environment. Psychological and emotional stress in our world today has also increased dramatically. Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response where the body attacks its own cells, mistaking something normally present in the body for a pathogen.  The government public health site tells us that autoimmune disease can affect anyone and that they are the leading cause of death and disability, affecting more than 23.5 million Americans. The good news is that international research is uncovering a number of products and medicines (natural and lab created) that have significant effects on the immune system. The bad news is that these products are typically used in a random or “shotgun” fashion without considering the dynamic complexity of the immune system, not surprisingly, the results are often disappointing. In this interesting overview Bobbie talks about the different approach taken by IRW Health Clinic where treatment programs are individualized based on the most sophisticated immune assessments available, such as T-Cell subsets, B-Cell Subsets, natural killer cell function and more, that probe deeply into immune system functions and dysfunctions. 00:31:00irwhealthclinicnoauto immune, autoimmune disorder, autoimmune disease, autoimmune treatment, auto immunityIMMUNE HEALTH SERIES:   Autoimmune disorders are exploding, and no one knows for certain exactly why.  Although there is no doubt that an increasingly toxic woSexy Seniorshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/08/31/sexy-seniorsHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/08/31/sexy-seniors/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/08/31/sexy-seniorsWed, 31 Aug 2011 20:30:00 GMTSexy Seniors Although society generally seems uncomfortable with the idea of Grandma and Grandpa having sex you may be surprised to learn that most older people lead active satisfying sex lives, even elderly singles, widows and widowers.  Dr Ruth is still going strong talking about sex at 77 and tells us that according to the Janus Report researchers found that 74% of women age 65 and older engaged in weekly sexual activity, including masturbation, compared to only 68% of women ages 18 to 26. The National Council on Aging found that 48% of Americans age 60 and older are sexually active with a partner regularly,  and at least once a month.  Two thirds of men aged 70 or older have a potential sexual partner. With this evergreen interest in sex at any age, and and internet dating at their fingertips, seniors are finding that they certainly need a little refresher course in their sexual education, particularly when it comes to the risks and dangers of sexually transmitted diseases. For starters, STDs are on the rise among seniors. For example 24% of AIDS cases are among seniors and that number is rising annually, and a recent Harvard study found a whopping 43% of widows had been diagnosed with an STD. Many seniors may mistakenly only think of "safe sex" in relation to birth control that no longer concerns them, but they do not realize that times have changed and that they are more at risk now than ever. In addition to being more prevalent many more types of STDs have been discovered by medical science since seniors may have last considered the issue. The good news is that the occurrence of slower healing responses  as we age is also related to various factors under our control, or factors that we can influence in positive ways, once we understand the natural aging and healing process and how to be our own health advocate as we age.  Although aging plays a part in such health issues as delayed wound and bone healing, it is helpful to understand the underlying issues such as our altered aging skin structure and decreased ability to make new blood vessels. Knowing how we age enables us to provide important extra support in the areas of nutrition, environmental stress reduction, and attention to interactions with other bodily systems or medications, emotional mental states, and many others. Baby Boomers are being dubbed society's nouveau elders, 76 million strong. Many Boomers provide assistive care to their elderly parents. Many are also caregivers to their chronically ill spouses and/or adult children including others to whom we provide assistive care.  And let us not forget the care taking of the care taker!  It helps to be realistic in eldercare, in terms of family help, time commitments, budget restraints, medical needs, etc. . It also helps when caregivers, other family members and our elders live each day in a spirit of realistic cooperation and the best intentions in our hearts while our feet remain firmly planted on the ground. In eldercare, being on the ground may translate to caring at home, assisted living, adult day care services, adult care facilities, eldercare private homes, healthcare house calls, in-home agency care or nursing homes. The very nature of care in advancing age implies a social need, and our ability to anticipate and assist with emerging senior needs. The demands on a caregiver's body, mind, and emotions can easily seem overwhelming, leading to fatigue, stress, anxiety, depression and hopelessness -- and, ultimately, burnout. Other factors that can lead to caregiver burnout include: Role confusion-- Many people are confused when thrust into the role of caregiver. It can be difficult for a person to separate her role as caregiver from her role as spouse, lover, child, friend, etc.Unrealistic expectations-- Many caregivers expect their involvement to have a positive effect on the health and happiness of the patient. This may be unrealistic for patients suffering from a progressive disease, such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.Lack of control-- Many caregivers become frustrated by a lack of money, resources, and skills to effectively plan, manage, and organize their loved one's care.Unreasonable demands-- Some caregivers place unreasonable burdens upon themselves, in part because they see providing care as their exclusive responsibility.Other factors-- Many caregivers cannot recognize when they are suffering burnout and eventually get to the point where they cannot function effectively. They may even become sick themselves.00:16:00irwhealthclinicnosenior caregiver, home care giver, health care giver, elderly caregiver, caregiver burnoutELDERCARE HEALTH SERIES - Who takes care of the caregiver?  In this episode Bobbie discusses this important issue and offers numerous ways to prevent the veryHome Health Carehttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/05/18/home-health-careHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/05/18/home-health-care/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/05/18/home-health-careWed, 18 May 2011 20:30:00 GMTHome Health Care ELDERCARE HEALTH SERIES - In this episode Bobbie takes a look at various kinds of home health care options for the elderly and discusses how to know which is appropriate or necessary in your situation as an elderly person or as a elder-care-giver. "Home care", "home health care" and "in-home care" are phrases that are used interchangeably in the United States to mean any type of care given to a person in their own home. Both phrases have been used in the past interchangeably regardless of whether the person requires skilled care or not. Today, with the growing number of elderly, there is a movement to distinguish between "home health care" meaning skilled nursing care and "home care" meaning non-medical care. For example, in other countries "domiciliary care" is the preferred expression for non-medical home care. Either way home care aims to make it possible for the elderly to remain at home rather than use residential, long-term, or institutional-based care. Home care providers render services in the client's own home. These services may include some combination of professional health care services and life assistance services. Professional home health services can include medical housecalls, psychological assessment, wound care, medication teaching, pain management, disease prevention education and management, physical therapy, speech therapy, or occupational therapy. Other home care can include such health related services such as help with daily self care tasks, meal preparation, medication reminders, laundry, housecare, conversation and companionship. Each type of homecare offers its own important health benefits to our elder population, and this episode will show you what you can do to beneift your situation. 00:10:00irwhealthclinicnohome care, home health care,in-home care, senior care, senior homecareELDERCARE HEALTH SERIES - In this episode Bobbie takes a look at various kinds of home health care options for the elderly and discusses how to know which is aLarry King's Alzheimers TV Specialhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/05/04/larry-kings-alzheimers-tv-specialHealthhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/05/04/larry-kings-alzheimers-tv-special/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/irwhealthclinic/2011/05/04/larry-kings-alzheimers-tv-specialWed, 04 May 2011 20:30:00 GMTLarry King's Alzheimers TV Special In this new Eldercare health series Bobbie discusses various aspects of caring for the elderly and begins with the growing concern of Alzheimer's Disease.
