From the 'hood to the 'burbs, no greater preservation exists than the life of a child. Help Tavarius graduate.

For several years, 52 Street Positive has been honored to receive numerous awards for mentoring, youth advocacy, and fatherhood engagement.  Now, they have combined all three aspects into a distinct collaboration to prevent child maltreatment for the positive.

Consider these facts courtesy of the US Dept of Health and Human Services:

  • The estimated annual cost of child abuse and neglect in the United States alone reached $124 billion in 2008.
  • Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across all ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.
     
  • Approximately 3 million reports of child abuse in the U.S. are made annually.
     
  • There are more than 470,000 children in foster care.
     
  • Approx 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.
     
  • A child abuse report is made every 10 seconds in the US.
     
  • 68% of the people in treatment for drug abuse reported being abused or neglected as children.
     
  • 14%, men, 36%, women incarcerated were abused as children.
     
  • 78% of 21 year olds abused as children have criteria of a mental disorder.
     
  • Types of abuses: Neglect, 62.8%; Physical, 16.6%; Sexual, 9.3%; Emotional, 7.1%.
     
  • Ethnicity: White, 49.7%; African American, 23.1%; Hispanic, 17.4%.
     
  • Gender: Female, 50.3%; Male, 47.3%
