MADONNA HANNA - ANTI-BULLYING

Madonna Hanna, a former fashion and retail executive, now teaches beginning and advanced fashion marketing and career exploration/personal finance classes at Bremerton High School in Bremerton. In 2006, Hanna created and spearheaded "Dare Not to Swear," an anti-swearing campaign at Bremerton High that received the Washington Education Association's 2007 Human and Civil Rights Student Involvement Award. Her other innovative projects include "Flights of Fancy," in which teens from the general student body partner with special needs students, transforming them into "fashion models" for a day. In 2002, through a Milken Festival for Youth grant, Hanna and her students staged a production of Beautiful Differences, a play about teasing and bullying written by Hanna based on her book, Mommy, Why Are My Eyes So Big? In 2003 Hanna received the Washington Organization for Reading Development's (WORD) Outstanding Author Award. Other awards include a Point of Light Award in 1992, Regional Teacher of the Year in 1999 and 2000 from the Office of the State Superintendent, and Teacher of the Year in 1990 and 2000 from the Washington State Association of Career and Technical Education. Hanna has appeared on many local television and radio shows and has been featured in local newspapers and national education publications.
