What a delight to have our friend and supremely gifted artist back with us!  Svetlana Shmulyian was born in Moscow, with piano, classical training, and a family of "nerds and engineers" surrounding her.  Math honors in tow, she arrived in New York with a suitcase and high expectations. More education at Manhattan School of Music (MA/ learned vocal performance and composition) - and Svet dove IN.

This highly praised singer, songwriter and arranger made some significant friends in her made-for-film story.  One of them was Wycliffe Gordon, who encouraged our guest to write.  How cool that the ace trombonist is featured on "Night at the Speakeasy!"  And how beautiful that the road to GET there - making this album - is just as significant as the response from HEARING it.  Svetlana didn't just snap her fingers and out popped a CD.  She has been working hard in varying musical ensembles for quite a while.  Varied like Klezmer, Gypsy and Gospel :)  She knows how to rock small units AND big bands.   The Swing Scene, in all its glory, has been revitalized because of her work with The Delancey Five.

This project has encountered some serious traction on radio outlets that joyfully received the heavy dose of DIFFERENT that Jazz needed!  Produced by Guy Eckstine, this multi-layered romp is rife with joy and unexpected surprises.  But it's that naturally sweet and organically refined voice of Svetlana that will knock you OUT.

Svetlana will be in concert at both Germano's Piattini in Baltimore and Bethesda Blues & Jazz outside Washington, D.C. If you are going to be near those areas in early April, your time will be enhanced by hearing Svet & her Delancey Five.  We have been blessed to have our guest agree to visit again - let's give her a warm welcome on 3/23!
