Think about the families. Think about the number of mothers, fathers, cousins, grandfathers, co-workers and best friends. Think about all the people that were pulled into and torn apart by the viscous cycle of addiction. Clearly, the numbers are staggering and the heartache is real and we need to start talking about it. That’s why I’ve created The Sibling Project: Exploring How The Lives of Siblings Are Impacted By Addiction. Over the next several weeks, I will be speaking one on one with a group who’s voice we rarely if ever get to hear, the siblings of addicts and alcoholics.  It is my hope, with this series of podcasts, that we can spark a new conversation that focuses on the countless number of siblings living and struggling alongside an addicted loved one.  In this fifth and final episode, I'm talking with Beth. Beth is currently a senior at the University of California-Berkley. So on one hand she's got this fantastic new chapter in her life that she's ready to open and explore. But on the other hand, at home, her oldest brother is struggling with a heroin addiction, while her other brother tragically died from a painkiller overdose in 2011. Unfortunately, Beth's story is not uncommon in the heartbreaking world of addiction.  00:31:00The Growing Up Chaotic ShownoThe Sibling Project,Family and Addiction,Siblings,Heroin,OverdoseAccording to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 24.6 million Americans were illicit drug users in 2013.  Now justThe Sibling Project: Episode 4 - Theresa Valentinhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2015/04/28/the-sibling-project-episode-4--theresa-valentinFamilyhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2015/04/28/the-sibling-project-episode-4--theresa-valentin/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2015/04/28/the-sibling-project-episode-4--theresa-valentinTue, 28 Apr 2015 15:00:00 GMTThe Sibling Project: Episode 4 - Theresa ValentinAccording to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 24.6 million Americans were illicit drug users in 2013.  Now just for a moment, take that number and try to imagine the number of people that were impacted by that illicit drug use. Theresa grew up with two older brothers both of which struggled with addiction. One loved heroin and the other would settle for just about anything he could get his hands on. At 19, Theresa left home to get away from the chaos, a decision she says she's never regretted.  00:39:00The Growing Up Chaotic ShownoThe Sibling Project,Addiction,Siblings,Codependency,FamilyAccording to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 24.6 million Americans were illicit drug users in 2013.  Now just forThe Sibling Project: Episode 3 - Merna & Lindahttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2015/04/23/the-sibling-project-episode-3--merna-lindaFamilyhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2015/04/23/the-sibling-project-episode-3--merna-linda/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2015/04/23/the-sibling-project-episode-3--merna-lindaThu, 23 Apr 2015 17:00:00 GMTThe Sibling Project: Episode 3 - Merna & LindaAccording to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 24.6 million Americans were illicit drug users in 2013.  Now just for a moment, take that number and try to imagine the number of people that were impacted by that illicit drug use. There is growing evidence that diet and lifestyle can affect the brain, impact cognitive aging, disrupt hormone production in the body and in some cases even spawn preventable diseases such as: cardiovascular disease, strokes, auto immune diseases, obesity and diabetes. When it comes to our overall health and well being we need to start paying attention to what we are putting into our bodies. That's why Karen V. Although, some would agree that this new pot policy, which went into effect on November 19th, 2014 is a step in the right direction - many drug decriminalization advocates are not convinced that New York's new policy will, as Bill de Blasio said, "reduce the number of unnecessary arrests for minor marijuana possession and put an end to an era where many of young New Yorkers were being arrested and saddled with criminal records for minor violations." According to the Drug Policy Alliance, the majority of these young New Yorkers are Black and Latino men and in this year alone they accounted for 86% of New Yorkers arrested for minor marjiuana possesion. So, what kind of impact will New York's new policy have on minority communities and the number of racially biased arrests?  Here to answer that question and walk us through New York's new pot policy is Kassandra Frederique the New York policy manager at the Drug Policy Alliance. The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) is the nation's leading organization promoting drug policies that are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights.   00:36:00The Growing Up Chaotic ShownoDrug Policy Alliance,Bill de Blasio,Bill Bratton,NYPD,Kassandra FrederiqueOn November 10th, 2014 New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton announced a new pot policy that would no longer allow the NYPD to aHow Fun Is Done In Sobriety With New Roads Behavioral Healthhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2014/11/20/how-fun-is-done-in-sobriety-with-new-roads-behavioral-healthYouthhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2014/11/20/how-fun-is-done-in-sobriety-with-new-roads-behavioral-health/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/growingupchaotic/2014/11/20/how-fun-is-done-in-sobriety-with-new-roads-behavioral-healthThu, 20 Nov 2014 18:00:00 GMTHow Fun Is Done In Sobriety With New Roads Behavioral HealthIf you or a loved one is recently sober or working hard at maintaining sobriety, figuring out how to fun without drugs or alcohol can be a daunting task but it's not an impossible one. Jeanne's journey to Bikram Yoga began with a deep realization that if she were to save her life she would need to change it, entirely. In the 80's, as an aspiring actress, Jeanne arrived in NYC in search of fame and fortune but instead she found drugs and alcohol. After hitting bottom, she checked herself into a long-term residential rehab and detox facility. But when she re-entered the real world, the physical damage to her body was taking its toll and that's when her friend bought her a 30-day Bikram Yoga introductory package. Bikram Yoga turned out to be the missing puzzle piece to her recovery. Today, her mission is to teach all people, especially recovering drug addicts, that no matter how bad you think it is, it's never too late to start from scratch, one posture at a time. In addition to all that Jeanne has accomplished personally, professionally her recovery journey has inspired her to become an Ambassador for PUREAction's - One Posture At A Time Project.      00:37:00The Growing Up Chaotic ShownoJeanne Heaton,Bikram Yoga,Bikram Yoga NYC,Addiction,Recovery"I am absolutely living proof, that no matter how badly you mess up your life - there is always a way back." In November of 2009, Audrey Mabrey's estranged husband attempted to viciously murder her by bludgeoning her with a hammer four times in the head and then doused her with gasoline and set her on fire. Audrey suffered severe burns over 80% of her body. Since that nightmare of a day, she made the decision to dedicate her life to advocating for other victims of domestic violence. She has traveled nationally and internationally to speak up and speak out about the horrors of domestic violence and the power of forgiveness. Audrey has been featured in national and international magazines and appeared on the Dr. Phil Show, ID's - Who The (Bleep) Did I Marry? and on Anderson Cooper.
