Therefore "brothers" is used in the Gospel of Mathew "Your Mother and brothers" in regard to Jesus. The Church teaches that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, the Holy Family, are all together Semper Virgo. Perpetual virginity is fundamental to the vocation of Mary as the Mother of God completely consecrated to bearing the Word Made Flesh, as virginity is for Jesus, His Bride is the Mystical Body the Church. Perpetual virginity is completely cogent for Joseph, the second most holy creature created by God in his vocation as holy father of Jesus. There is no evidence whatsoever that Joseph was previously married (and divorced?) and had sons from a previous marriage. Non-Catholics, Cathars, Protestants and Evangelicals are quick to misinterpret scripture to denigrate Mary and most especially Joseph wrongly claiming to be solely worshiping Jesus as saviour.
