They will discuss the state of HIV/AIDS programs in Africa, donor-led development, and other topics. David Patient was diagnosed with HIV in 1983.  While living in the USA at the time he was highly active in the movement to demand treatment and research for those living with HIV, and assisted in setting up numerous programmes and agencies, for which he received a Presidential Acknowledgment in 1994, from President Clinton. Patient has also been part of several studies of so-called “long-term non-progressors” which are trying to find the common factors in a group of people who have managed to maintain immune function despite 20 years or more of being infected with HIV.  The findings of these studies of long-term non-progressors are the basis for the book Positive Health. Currently Patient lives in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, from where he runs Empowerment Concepts, a program design and training business started in 1995 with his partner Neil Orr, a research psychologist. Together they design and present training courses for a variety of groups: community training on issues of HIV and AIDS, food security, and positive living wWellness for both those living with HIV, and people in general); and corporate training in leadership development, personal empowerment and wellness. Patient and Orr have published several books, including Positive Health, Choices (an up-to-date book for ordinary people about HIV/AIDS), Sex Secrets (life skills for teens and young adults, and The Healer Inside You (an at-home therapy protocol based on psycho-neuro-immunology). http://www.davidpatient.com/ http://www.empow.co.za/   01:05:00Global Health LeadersnoGlobal Health,HIV/AIDS,Professional Development,International Development,South AfricaThis week Dr. Elvira will be speaking with David Patient; activist, author, and South Africa’s longest-living HIV-positive person. They will discuss her recent work on the connections between nutrition and gender and the implications they both have on development.  Dr. Rae Lesser Blumberg has lived a double life in academia and development, working in 44 countries since serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Venezuela.  She’s worked in virtually all sectors of development, with the World Bank, USAID, UNESCO, UNDP and other UN agencies, the African Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, various international NGOs and individual governments. Much of her academic work involves her general theory of gender stratification and a still-evolving theory of gender and development; in both, women’s vs. men’s relative economic power (defined as control of income and other assets) is posited as the key – but not sole – factor affecting gender equality and many other development-related outcomes.  All her degrees are from Northwestern University and she is the author of over 100 publications. They will discuss the importantce of supporting the capacity of women to succeed. Ms. Stracuzzi worked in marketing communications for the commercial and nonprofit sectors, in U.S. and Europe for many years before deciding to do something different. She was motivated to make this change after adopting her daughter, Talia, from Guatemala and experienceing a country so rich in natural beauty yet struggling with vast poverty and inequities. This left an indelible impression, and guided Ms. Stracuzzi to a career change and fueled her desire to someday help her daughter understand the hardships people in her birth country face. After researching projects and efforts underway at the time to help Guatemala and its people, she came to understand that like a lot of developing countries, Guatemala is a class-driven society in which marginalization, poverty and chronic malnutrition are grimly interconnected. She decided to pursue a career in Global Health Communications by obtaining a graduate certificate in Global Health.  Since then, Ms. Stracuzzi has been working in the health and development field and as a coach to health professionals from around the world.  She has traveled to Guatemala professionally, giving her additional opportunity to experience the country and its people more intimately. Most recently Ms. Stracuzzi started e-Women:International Mentoring Network which provides coaching and mentoring to women in developing countries, like Guatemala, who are starting businesses and careers.  Driven by the belief that when a person is mentored, two people grow, eWomen also gives the women who volunteer their time as coaches and mentors the opportunity for a rich and rewarding experience that has a direct impact on the life of another woman. 00:55:00Global Health LeadersnoGlobal Health,Women,Communication,Millennium Development Goals,Capacity DevelopmentThis week Dr. Elvira will speak with Gina Stracuzzi, founder ofe-Women: International Mentoring Network. They will talk about many things including the rapid changes occurring in health care today, the importance of providing quality health care, what is meant my quality health care, and how it can be accomplished. Dr. Bolliger has treated thousands of patients in Canada over the past two decades; from rural farmers in Nova Scotia to corporate stressed out CEOs in Toronto, to Tri-Athletes in British Columbia. This diversified experience, not only in the range of required skills in health care and in pain relief, but also the differing mindsets that people have towards their bodies, has helped her identify the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and being able to truly listen and respond from the place where people are coming from. Her Cornerstone Health Centre accommodates a full team of experts. The Centre has programs for patients that include pain relief, aging with grace (anti-aging) and holistic and preventative family health care. Her passion for healing from the inside out has led her to specialize in homeopathy and the Bowen Technique. Throughout her personal and academic journey, she was led by her desire to understand what makes people change, grow, heal and celebrate life.
