By 16, he was updating all of the automation and control systems. At 19 he spent his first college spring break training on operating, programming and maintaining the company's first robot. His obvious curiosity, ingenuity and ability have only grown throughout his career. While still an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering, Ryan managed to work for than half of the year starting with Superior Controls, an Engineering and Equipment manufacturer for the automotive industry. Travelling North America, his project was nominated for a Ford World in Excellence Award. The Christmas Ryan was 22, his grandfather and founder of Fin Pan turned to Ryan and asked for his help and his return to the family business. While officially Fin Pan's engineer, Ryan has his hands in most every aspect of the business. Within a day, he could be found working on new product design, plant floor processes and pioneering the use of cement, concrete and foam products. ClearPath is the result of the family's need for accessibility. Lisa's niece Amy has Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) aka brittle bones-leaving her confined to a wheelchair. Mother of 2, Amy could not use and enjoy the family summer home with the bathroom not accessible.  At 88, Lisa's mother struggled with a curb step and extended shower standing. With no available solution, they invented one. Now the family home has an accessible shower and the industry has a beautiful solution that doesn't require costly floor joist modifications. The youngest of 4, Lisa, her husband, and both sons all work for FinPan. Lisa’s family has always had a family business. Her father oversaw her grandfather’s Drywall & Plastering business, while her mother started a Laundromat and Dry Cleaners where Lisa learned to read and write starting at three years old. She and her brother Steve, who also now works for FinPan companies, would watch them as they developed the product in her father’s friend garage, learning to mix concrete. Fin Pan Inc. was born around the kitchen table, forged from the strength of family. 02:00:00Conversations with Gailnocurbless shower, accessibility,FAMILY BUSINESS,FinPan,Lisa SchafferFew women can lead a family business in a male dominated industry like tile related manufacturing.  Fewer can balance grace, humility and ingenuity while puttinAward-Winning Film Producer, Screenwriter, Author, Philanthropist Anna Eliashttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2014/04/04/award-winning-film-producer-screenwriter-author-philanthropist-anna-eliasFilmhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2014/04/04/award-winning-film-producer-screenwriter-author-philanthropist-anna-elias/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2014/04/04/award-winning-film-producer-screenwriter-author-philanthropist-anna-eliasFri, 04 Apr 2014 01:00:00 GMTAward-Winning Film Producer, Screenwriter, Author, Philanthropist Anna EliasMatt Damon, Jodie Foster, Kevin Bacon, Bruce Willis, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones are just a few of the celebrities film production maven, Anna Elias has worked aside,  most often a location manager and/or assistant manager. She got her start as Don Johnson's assistant on Miami Vice and later went on to work on films like Sommersby, Nell, The Rainmaker, My Dog Skip, 12 Monkeys and many more.  As seen on her website,  Anna focuses her time on producing, writing and developing new projects. Hereditary Misfortune won her the Jury Prize at the Beverly Hills Film Festival as producer. In his words: "Our family was pretty much like any other family.  As a kid, I was like any other kid, sometimes compliant with my parent’s wishes, other times less so.  As a parent myself of four children, there are times when transgressions are significant and need to be addressed accordingly, but far more often a very soft reminder is sufficient. "In the house where I was raised, I think the gentle reminders were by far the most common.  I’d break some rule or commit some transgression and my parents would feign anger.  I cannot say that I never took advantage of my parent’s inability to see what skulduggery I was up to.  Eventually busted, my mother would furrow her brow that her mouth would betray with a smile as she’d say with disgust “Ah!  Your nothing but a silly TAB–you’re just Temporarily Able Bodied.”  Then with a confiding, knowing voice she’d softly say “Sooner or later you’ll be one of us.  Then you’ll get your comeuppance.”  And we’d all laugh. So there it is.  I am a TAB–and hopefully I will be for a long time to come.  After all, life itself is a chronic medical condition, so taking personal control is what healthcare is all about." If you are film-maker Banker White you create an award winning documentary.  Then you turn it into national advoacy. Early onset Alzheimer's can shake any family.  Coming soon after the decline and death of her own mother from Alzheimer's is even more tragic.  Now imagine prior to the diagnosis: the grandmother was an internationally reknown artist, the mother an actress and model. One son is an award winning film-maker, another a professor and scientist, the daughter now mother of 3 young children, the father a partner in his firm, friendships date back over 30 years from a singing troupe to tennis, years of family gatherings from Martha's Vineyard to Christmases. Add in a family unique in today's time- extra-odrinarily close, loving, and having had an enriching family life around the hub of their mother's love. In Genius of Marian, director Banker White has managed to portray it all in a way that is as much about a family's love as it is about the nightmare of watching the decline of Alzheimer's in someone so young.  While paying tribute to the art of his grandmother and the vibrancy of the life that Pam White led to the stuggles she and her husband face daily from dressing to bathing, White has made an extraordinary film that is neither overly sentimental nor dishonest in the complexity among the entire family. Perhaps this is why the film- appearing on PBS this fall- has swept the Indie Documentary recognitions including film festivals such as Tribecca, Camden and Washington. Banker, his co-director wife Anna, and the entire family is putting their time and support behind an ongoing outreach education program The Caring of Marian.  For more see numerous articles now and following in DemandDesign.net. 03:01:00Conversations with GailnoGenius of Marian,Alzheimer's,Documentary,Director,Banker WhiteYour mother gets Alzheimer's at 60. She has lived a full life of love and accomplishment. Both a self-advocate and accomplished author, she worked 37 years until the day when Alzheimer's progressed too far for it to be safe. In her 59 years in Colorado, she lived with a family of 3 girls in love and support, the oldest being Patty McFeeley who will be our guest.   During her life, Gretchen was also the published author of Bus Girl about which Amazon reviewer Jeanie Bernice Street wrote, "Gretchen DOES NOT appear or write as a disabled individual, but more of a very ABLED woman. Her short poems are funny, insightful and a joy to read. This text should be in every classroom to show students what they can do if they want." After her 50ith birthday, the family started noticing some decline and fought for 4 years to get the needed "dual-Neurologic testing" needed. December 2009, Gretchen was diagnosed with moderate to severe dementia. Since then the family has stood by as Gretchen has declined from a life lived independently in her own condo, to speaking in partial sentences at an Assisted Living Facility. Not only will Patti be giving voice to the full life of her sister, but teaching us all what we can learn about new research, signs and treatments. An unusual opportunity to talk first-hand to the leader of the research as it is happening and learn in terms so we can all benefit how this affects the lives of so many.  Sign up via the comments on our site to ask questions ahead, add comments afterward, and to follow the research and community from the ground up. 01:59:00Conversations with GailnoDown Syndrome,Alzheimer's,Genetic ResearchDr. Huntington Potter will be live to explain in plain language the importance between the Down Syndrome and Alzheimer's Link- and what this means to caregiversMouse Leads Entrepreneur Mom To Create $40 million Sustainable Companyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/11/12/mouse-leads-entrepreneur-mom-to-create-40-million-sustainable-company-1Businesshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/11/12/mouse-leads-entrepreneur-mom-to-create-40-million-sustainable-company-1/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/11/12/mouse-leads-entrepreneur-mom-to-create-40-million-sustainable-company-1Tue, 12 Nov 2013 02:00:00 GMTMouse Leads Entrepreneur Mom To Create $40 million Sustainable CompanyA modern day fairy tale: take a Mom of 2 living hand-to-mouth, combine a distaste of mice and a move from city to country, mix in un-trained business savvy, and create a $40 million company that’s doing right for her community, our environment and her business. Kari Block represents everything possible for today’s entrepreneur.  From what she has accomplished, we can all learn. In the early 90’s Kari Block was working at a cosmetic counter, on a trip to see “the guy”, a mouse ran over her, and she used her perfume to ward it off.  After they married and she moved her two children from city to country, she was selling potpourri off the farm.  With the country mice still a problem, she experimented with their distaste for smells, took any dime she could get, and started selling safe, toxic free solutions to get rid of mice for the home or the farm. Now Earth Kind with its banner Fresh Cab product is supporting her family, the community, people of all abilities and using smart business techniques. She's also proving you can be green, sustainable, manufacture in the U.S and turn a profit.  Kari Block has been named one of Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneurial Young Women, one of the top three entrepreneurs by the Small Business Administration, and helped launch 7 new businesses through Start Up North Dakota.   This is also the final week for voting for her Chase Bank Mission Main Street Grant. While speaking at international conferences, she paints as a part of the message. With the tools of technology and social media- she pushes for transparency, partnership, change.  As a mother she juggles raising two sons, the oldest on the Autistic Spectrum. But more importantly, he implements the solution in a new type of healthcare clinic. He is also founder of what he says is the new model in person centered care:  Advanced Hernia Solutions. The entire team is built around the relationship with the providers and the patients, and uses the latest in technology to the most basic in physician-patient relationships: personal communication, education, and ensuring real comfort and understanding. A sought after educator, speaker and trainer, he writes and talks about the change that must happen in healthcare because as he writes about complexity science, the model they are implementing, "In complexity science, one principle is that transformational system change can only occur when the system is on the edge of chaos. Another reason for my hope lies in the belief that our healthcare system is close to that edge." He's a member of The Walking Gallery, and written for the healthcare industry and providers frequently as can be seen on our website from General Surgery News and taught another 100 publications and over 100 national and international courses. It is hard to decide if her passion, her knowledge or her proof of spending day after day, year after year to make a difference makes her as exceptional as she is.  One thing we know, Barbara Kornblau will help us better understand, become more aware, and see the important issues we're tackling this week and always through our show and around the web.   02:01:00Conversations with GailnoEthan Saylor,ACA,Health Policy,Disability,Barbara KornblauThis week as we look from the Ethan Saylor case to what the ACA really means to us, to what this all means for people with disabilities and those who love themArchitect, Designer, Founder MoD Design Guru Michele Alfanohttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/08/23/architect-designer-founder-mod-design-guru-michele-alfanoDesignhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/08/23/architect-designer-founder-mod-design-guru-michele-alfano/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/08/23/architect-designer-founder-mod-design-guru-michele-alfanoFri, 23 Aug 2013 17:00:00 GMTArchitect, Designer, Founder MoD Design Guru Michele Alfano Thinking Outside the Box.  That sums up Michele Alfano as architect, designer of interiors and furniture, entrepreneur, philanthropist and personality. Daughter of a pioneer in the application of light and photonics technology, she was instilled to do more than what is expected, look at what's next: be passionate and inspired in all she does. As an architect and interior designer including airport, retail, restaurant and residential, she's continually moved outside the box. Currently with an architectural firm outside her NY home, she serves Manhattan, Brooklyn, Deal and Lawrence residences.   One past work, the Iwataya Passage in Fukuoka Japan used multi-media, light and the feeling of water underground.  Recognized by Architectural Record and  Interior Magazine, it represents a career of significant awards including an AIA Honors Award. As an entrepreneur, she's created ModDesignGuru.com which has earned almost every accolade available for a design site.  More than a site, it's a "design tank".  The mission: to investigate how innovators are changing the way we live our lives today and tomorrow from emerging artists to premier design voices in the fields of architecture, interior, product and fashion. Inject love: anyone can learn from her outlook in creating an experience and weaving a story with purity, boldness, the unexpected, amusing and tactile. She brings this same energy and excitement to philanthropic work. As one of its premier designers, we'll get the first look at last night's DIFFA picnic: The Design Industries Foundation for AIDS research.  She can be seen in the Hamptons or Cologne promoting great charities and represented at important industry events. Six months ago Gia Sisson, Ma was at the top of her career.  A working physician in family medicine and employee health, she become Medical Director of one of the most prestigious healthcare systems in the Philippines.  She had two beautiful children.  She was known across her country for her willingness to bring health to everyone and discuss the tough topics openly whether sex or preventative medicine. Suddenly she was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer- the most rare, and most often fatal form of Breast Cancer.   Instead of giving up, she took to fight the breast cancer with radical surgery and 6 rounds of chemotherapy.  Re-united with her husband, she focused even more on family and faith.  Still, she took time and energy to not sit in self pity- but turn it into advocacy.  She created #cancerlove and started talking about all the good that had come into her life because of the cancer.  Already involved in online healthcare social media as a leader in Carpool Health and well respected contributor to numerous communities, she worked even harder reaching out:  to patients with support, to other physicians for more understanding that she now had, to caregivers and other mothers. In short, Dr. Gia Sisson, in her journey from physician to patient continued to do more for the world of healthcare and the individuals affected while going through chemotherapy rounds for six straight months, and speaking often from half-way across the world. This week she complete her last round of chemotherapy.  She is giving her first interview here, with Gail Zahtz at Health + Design.  She will be talking in the compassionate honesty that is her hallmark openly about what her journey has been like- for better and worse- what we all can learn as she has, the faith and love that help her get through, and her plans now that she unbelievably survived to return to practicing medicine. 02:00:00Conversations with GailnoDr Gia Sisson,Breast Cancer,Physician,Patient Advocacy,Healthcare social mediaSix months ago Gia Sisson, Ma was at the top of her career.  A working physician in family medicine and employee health, she become Medical Director of one ofGuest Rosemarie Rossetti: Universal Design Living Laboratoryhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/08/07/guest-rosemarie-rossetti-universal-design-living-labratoryDesignhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/08/07/guest-rosemarie-rossetti-universal-design-living-labratory/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/gailzahtz/2013/08/07/guest-rosemarie-rossetti-universal-design-living-labratoryWed, 07 Aug 2013 17:00:00 GMTGuest Rosemarie Rossetti: Universal Design Living Laboratory After earning her PhD at The Ohio State University College Rosemarie Rossetti had a successful career in teaching, speaking and marketing. In 1998 she had just moved to focus exclusively on speaking when a tree fell on her. She had a spinal cord injury which changed her life. While still at the hospital, her colleagues and supporters helped her see that not only was her life not over, but that she could turn her expertise in speaking, and her personal experience of life in a wheelchair into both a career and a lifetime commitment to helping others, and making the world a better place through Universal Design, encouraging the need for disability insurance, and then into creating her own actual Universal Design Living Laboratory.   Since then she has been a sought after keynote speaker and corporate trainer internationally on the issues of Universal Design. Then she and her husband committed to building the first ever Universal Design Living Laboratory- a home that showcases all the elements of UD, in its beauty and functionality, and literally invites people into her home. Inspiring millions, she has made a full time paying career in the areas many wish for, but few accomplish:  speaking and sponsorship.  Her many sponsors enable her to both speak at non-paying conferences, but have a place in virtually every inch of the UDLL.   During our hour in-depth interview, we'll get to know Rosemarie Rossetti as a person who turns challenges into opportunities.  We'll learn fundamentals in our on-going series of the intersections with design and health.  For those seeking a career in speaking and brand ambassadorship- we will learn from a woman who has been completely successful at DOING it.   No doubt, an incredible opportunity for designers, patients, manufacturers, speakers, healthcare providers and more...we'll pack in a lot into this special hour. 01:30:00Conversations with GailnoUniversal Design,Speaking,Brand Ambassadorship,Win-Win for Sponsorship,Universal Design Living LaboratoryAfter earning her PhD at The Ohio State University College Rosemarie Rossetti had a successful career in teaching, speaking and marketing. Years later, he spoke to the editor of Wired Magazine Charles Graeber.  Why?  While known for his work in GQ, The New Yorker, National Geographic and New York  Magazine, why did Cullen answer Graeber's letter?  Drawn to the easy nature of Cullen at times, even Graeber could forget over the years of interviews that he was near befriending a serial killer while at the same time being the only person to tell the full story. Despite detailed endnotes, there was not enough room to tell everything the author learned in writng The Good Nurse, which remains on the NY Times Best Seller List.  There is much about the story we still do not know. And despite interviews across the country including 60 Minutes and The Katie Couric Show, there is much about the author audiences do not know.  Why did he leave medical school to travel the world and enter war torn areas for investigative journalism?  What has his life been like from scientist to author?  Who is the man that the serial killer broke years of silence to tell everything? In the only extended heart to heart with Charles Graeber we will dig deep into the man, his years from medicine to the impact of living in constant danger. What can he teach us as an author of everything from  a peer-review journal, to living the life of successful, award wining full-time journalist?   He is complex, extraordinarily interesting, multi-layered and remarkably honest.  This is an interview you won't want to miss! 02:01:00Conversations with GailnoThe Good Nurse,Charles Graeber,New York Times Best Seller,Medicine,WiredNurse Charles Cullen killed about 400 patients over 16 years, confessed after being caught, andt then spoke to no-one again. She provides inspiration on her own spiritual journey from child abuse to heart problems to working undercover to catch serial killer Charles Cullen. But more, she looks at all the good in #nurses, health providers, and patients- each who has a soul and a life she honors- and how we can turn tragedy into real change in our own lives and within healthcare. Carpool Health has always adressed the big health topics, the ones that affect our daily lives, and those that are coming head-on with compassion, support, and everyone within health at the table.  This unique opportunity will give us in an inside view into the hurdles set up by the system to prevent accurate reporting, the hard honesty and decisions of the informants from the book, and the author's almost decade long dedication into uncovering the truth about Charles Cullen, the nurse who killed up to 400 patients while on duty in hospitals. You can also join us on Tuesdays at 1 ET at #CPHC on twitter- tomorrow Amy will be the live guest- when #CPHC has a weekly chat bringing together physicians, nurses, patients, caregivers and everyone who wants to turn the challenges of healthcare and personal health into solutions.  Amy is just one example of the type of inspirational guests in our communities. 01:02:00Conversations with GailnoThe Good Nurse,Charles Cullen serial killer nurse,Katie Couric Show,Charles Graeber author Good Nurse,NursesJoin Amy Ridgway, nurse and the confidential informant, whose courage ended the career of serial killer Charles Cullen is in the New York Times Bestseller book
