Unbelief, hardness of heart, rebellion, reluctance: Why do people resist the good God tries to bring into their lives?
God spoke through Moses—words of promise and glory (it was called the "Promised Land"). Those words, as powerful and full of promise a they were, accomplished little good. Hearing is of little value until the message informs the heart of the hearer. Almost all of them died in the wilderness on the way to the Land.
So, agrues HW, don't let the same thing happen to you. Again, the Second Exodus comes into focus. 40 years in the wilderness does not have to end up in fall-away victims who do not quite make it into the Rest (of which all overs were divinely appointed types). In other words, HW was reasoning with them: Don't miss out through resisting the message of Jesus like they missed out when they resisted Moses.
Diligence is called for; or HW's audience would be just like those first wanderers: falling through disobedience. And, God's word can even lay bare all motives!
Without ignoring the difficulties they faced, HW made a huge promise: What ever the need or urgency might be, we can always find mercy and grace at the throne of grace. We don't have to "muscle through" on our own. Jesus is "on call" 24/7!
