My guest is John Leland who is a Metro reporter for the New York Times.  Since joining The Times in 2000, he has covered topics ranging from the poetry of rock lyrics, to the housing crisis.

Mr. Leland is the author of 3 books: "Hip: The History" "Why Kerouac Matters: The Lessons of On The Road" and his terrific book "Happiness is a Choice You Make" which we discuss on this episode.

Happiness Is a Choice You Make: Lessons from a Year Among the Oldest Old documents the lives six New Yorkers who are over 85 years old for a year. What could have been a journal of loss, is actually a heartwarming guide for all of us. The lessons teach us how to come to terms with our lives and celebrate the present.  It is truly a heartwarming book and you will recognize yourself and people you know.
