Linda Vidi interviews Hope G. Miller BSN, RN, SANE-A, CA-CP SANE is a Board Certified Adult/Adolescent and Texas OAG certified Adult/Adolescent & Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and Lead Forensic Nurse at a hospital based program in Texas. She has been a nurse for twenty-one years and a certified SANE for ten years. HShe provides educational presentations to healthcare providers, ancillary staff, social workers, advocates, and others regarding care of the sexual assault patient, human/sex trafficking, elder abuse, and non-fatal strangulation.

I would like to talk about the medical forensic exam and evidence collection otherwise referred to as the “rape kit”. There is a lot of misperception and misunderstanding in relation to the exam process, its purpose, who routinely provides this type of care and what to expect during an exam. SANE/forensic nurses take a patient-centered,  trauma-informed approach to the exam process where the patient has a choice in what happens and nothing is ever done without their affirmative consent. The patient is an active participant working in collaboration with the SANE helping the patient to feel safe and building trust with the goal of eliciting empowerment to reclaim bodily autonomy and move forward towards healing.

Linda will also talk to Hope about the emotional and long-term psychological  effects of sexual assault. If you are a survivor, know someone who is, or would like to learn more about this topic please join us
