"Bolden, Rodgers & Hammerstein" from May 2019

I’ll be sharing my thoughts on Bolden, the recent screen portrait of Buddy Bolden, the unsung father of jazz from early 20th Century New Orleans.  And then I’ll be talking about a handful of musicals from the Rodgers & Hammerstein collection and a couple of others. How do they hold up? Has what we now know of history and a better understanding of culture robbed them of their magic? Oklahoma – Carousel – South Pacific -- The King And I – Cinderella – Flower Drum Song – The Sound of Music.
