Police suspected assisted suicide, and the Georgia Burea of Investigation launched a probe into the Final Exit Network. Today, the GBI's investigation led to the arrests of Atlanta resident Claire Behr, age 76, and a Kennesaw man, 63-year-old Thomas E. Goodwin. Authorities in Maryland also charged two others they believe to be part of the alleged assisted suicide network: Baltimore residents Dr. Lawrence Egbert, age 81 and 60-year-old Nicholas Alec Sheridan. The GBI became involved after Cumming Police and the Forsyth County coroner suspected the unnamed suicide in Cumming had received assistance and relatives found material related to Final Exit in the man's possession. According to Atlanta's ABC affiliate, WSB TV, the arrestees all "have been charged on warrants out of Forsyth County with assisted suicide, tampering with evidence, and violation of the Georgia RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act." 01:00:00EndeavorFreedomTVnoAssisted Suicide,Euthanasia, community choice act of 2007,disability rights, equality freedomIn June 2008, a 58-year-old resident of Cumming, Georgia passed away from helium intoxication. Zen Garcia interviews Laura Hershey, T.K. Small, Diane Coleman, and Julie Maury about protesting decision to Honor Jerry Lewis. Los Angeles – Nearly 50 activists from across the US protested at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) headquarters in Beverly Hills today, demanding to meet with AMPAS officials and to present a petition signed by over 2600 individuals objecting to the plan to grant Jerry Lewis the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at this Sunday’s Oscar Awards ceremony. The protesters, mostly people with disabilities, occupied the lobby and refused to leave. Finally, AMPAS Executive Director Bruce Davis was summoned to meet with the group, called The Trouble with Jerry. Lewis has long defended the use of pity as a fundraising tactic. He has also described disabled individuals as “half a person” and referred to a wheelchair as “a steel imprisonment.” At both the Kodak Theater and AMPAS, protesters distributed leaflets to mostly sympathetic pedestrians, including stars such as John Lithgow and Richard Libertini, as they came to collect their tickets for Sunday’s Academy Awards. Then protesters entered the AMPAS office to deliver the petition, printed on a long scroll of red paper, and featuring comments by 2642 people from around the world. Initially academy officers refused to accept the petition. Activists continued to occupy the lobby, singing songs and chanting “No award for Jerry Lewis!” AMPAS officials apparently called the police to eject the protesters, but before any arrests were made, Davis arrived to meet with the group’s leadership. During the meeting, protesters expressed the outrage they felt when they learned of the award, after having listened to Jerry Lewis’ portrayals of life with a disability as incomplete, unsatisfying, even wasteful. “I have my own business, my own home, and a relationship,” said advocate and writer Gar01:00:00EndeavorFreedomTVnoOSCAR SHOWDOWN,httpthetroublewithje, free our people,EndeavorFreedomTV,Disability RightsEditors apology, pops occur through-out due to a bad connection with one of our callers. The thimerosal preservative prevents bacteria from growing within the vaccine when the needle is dipped in and out of the vial to draw another shot. The FDA estimates that it's use in more than 30 licensed vaccines and biologics even though there have been publications in the most respected journals of medicine since the beginning of its introduction as a preservative on the market; warning about the dangers of mercurial based agents as preservatives to make vaccines multi-usable. Atlantis continued to campaign until 1983, when the bus company agreed to purchase only accessible vehicles. In 1983, ADAPT (the American Disabled for Accessible Public Transport) was born and staged its first national action in Denver, demanding that all disabled people could ride public transit. The We Will Ride campaign lasted until 1990, winning victories throughout the USA and inspiring disabled people all over the world to use the tactics of non-violent civil disobedience to “boldly go where everyone else has been before”. It inspired the birth in the UK of the Campaign for Accessible Transport and subsequently the Disabled People’s Direct Action Network (DAN). ADAPT played a crucial role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 (ADA), with disabled people crawling up the Capitol steps in Washington, DC, to ensure that the act was not watered down (pictured far left). In 1990, with the ADA signed, ADAPT became the American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today, turning its energy to getting people out of nursing homes and supporting them in the community. They also stopped people going into these institutions. Over the last 18 years, ADAPT has been directly responsible for tens of thousands of disabled people getting out of nursing homes and living in the community. ADAPT fights for the services and the housing needed so that all disabled people can live where they choose, with who they choose, and direct the assistance they need themselves. With its unceasing advocacy at local, state and national levels, ADAPT is indirectly responsible for hundreds of thousands of disabled people living in the community rather than institutions.
