  • Another Fork in the Road - How Do Children Deal with Brain Injury of a Parent?

    in Education

It's hard enough for children to navigate their normal lives through early years, preteen years, and their tulmultuous teen years, but when a parent has a brain injury that alters the dynamics of the family, it can turn a child's life upside down.  Join me as I talk with brain injury survivors and their family members.

Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College plans, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slip from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating. But as Yogi Berra once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." Life is all about choices!

This was caused by a cardiac arrest and lack of oxygen to my brain a premmie. Until I finally realized as an adult, that what I thought was a "learning disability," was actually a brain injury!    I had been struggling with health difficulties for a while. Then a CT scan, showed an abnormal brain reading , I  laughed, saying,“I know I'm abnormal already! Tell me something I don’t know!”     Then, they told me I had MS! MS is one of  the most debilitating neurological diseases. When I discovered that I was diagnosed with it, it changed my life. I only knew to continue approaching life the way I always had: as a survivor! That does not imply that I did not make mistakes along the way - as people do when the road they thought they were taking in their life turns into a new one. Through friendship, family, spirituality, and the many MS role models I had, I began to beat back the monster of this disease.  Their in, I opened up my life to a journey of adventure: Learning things any normal person can do to enhance their lives after MS&brain injury. I hope you will come along with my guests and I on this adventure and find the positive in what seems to be all negative at first!     I choose guests that also live their lives with positivity and will teach YOU great tips and tricks to live a positive beautiful, full life despite your MS or BI or any issue you face today!
