If you log on to facebook, or any online chat group, everyone seems so angry, stressed out and many fancy themselves to be experts at very complex political, religious or societal matters.  Author, clincial psychologist, anthropologist and teacher, Mary Bray Pipher, PhD, takes on our planet's greatest problems with the skills of a truly gifted therapist. She knows why we avoid and deny the truth and she knows how we can heal ourselves and our communities. We discuss her latest book, "The Green Boat: Reviving Ourselves in Our Capsized Culture" Every day we are hit by a tidal wave of information, a great deal of which is troubling and traumatic. Yet our basic equipment—our bodies and brains—have not adapted. We simply are not built to respond well.  "The Green Boat" suggests that we can only be sane and healthy by reconnecting with these things. Our inner and outer lives are interconnected. Healing ourselves will require us to reweave the web of life around us. You won't want to miss this inspirational visit with a visionary author about a fundamental concern for our time.  Only on Everyday KC www.everyday-kc.com  00:42:00EverydayKCnoMary Pipher,The Green Boat, self awareness, positivity, information overloadToday on Everyday KC, we focus on how to deal with our tumultuous culture. The marvelous Italian tile floor has been meticulously repaired, the fixtures recall the "Arts & Crafts" era of the current 1912 building. (The resort dates back to 1888, but suffered two fires in 1889 & 1910). Every room has been totally renovated to period, yet completely modern down to the flatscreen TV and clock radio with an iPod dock. The pools, spa, dining room, lobby, huge work-out facility and lap pool are gorgeous.  As for the food - our guest on the show is the new Executive Chef/F&B Director Kelli Daniels. She has created a remarkably friendly and approachable menu, featuring comfort foods like fried chicken, steaks, pork chops, fried potato hash, grits, collards and beet salad. The sort of stuff you'd get for supper at the farm. But Chef Kelli's interpretations are gourmet, with a nod to local and organic ingredients, four-star presentations and flawless execution. Of course, the father of animated film, Walt Disney, began is career here, with his company, "Laugh-O-Gram Studios". But in what is now the Crossroads Arts District, between downtown and Crown Center was "Movie Row". In the days when showing a full-length motion picutre involved hoisting a heavy film reel onto a projector, Kansas City was the perfect central location to distribute films nationwide.  Today, some power-house production companies keep very busy, largely fueled by KC's top advertising agencies, as well as KC-based companies like Hallmark, Sprint, H&R Block, and AMC Theaters. Brett Atkinson - "Brettski" to his friends - the proprietor of the "Wilma's Real Good Food" trailer, couldn't bare to see the suffering in Moore, OK after the devastating tornado leveled a signifcant part of the town. So he did what he could do. He gassed up the rig, filled it with provisions and drove down I-35, where he was taken in by a local church, and he set up and feed hundreds of free meals to anyone who needed a meal. The whole adventure was literally on a wing and a prayer. He didn't know where the money would come from, where he'd be able to buy supplies down there, or even where he would stay. But it all came together. In part thanks to the generosity of many of our common friends. And the story is very touching and compelling.  And, of course our usual sillyness and banter about KC events. It is also the center of community and fellowship with our neighbors and friends. It is love, family, art and passion. But there's a lot of scary stuff out there about the content and quality of the food we eat. Foreign nations with dubious safety records buying up major food producers. US corporations that are notorious for their business practices and lack of transparency sue small farmers, and brow-beat lawmakers into defending them from consumers who want answers. Reports of food items tainted by chemicals and pathogens. But there's one way to avoid it all - Grow your own, and find community gardens, local farmers and other forms of "Community Supported Agriculture". Grow what you can, and get your other ingredients, whenever possible from local farmers you can look in the eye, ask the tough questions and get straight answers.  Today, we sit down with a couple from Lee's Summit, MO, who've made their home garden into a neighborhood produce supplier - Terri & Scott Belser of Windy's Urban Garden.  Rachel  and Duane discuss some of our favorite ways to get farm-to-table fresh food, from our own gardens, as well as Schenker Family Farms, Fresh Connect KC, and others we use and trust.  All on today's Everyday KC www.everyday-kc.com   00:59:00EverydayKCnoCSA,organic,natural,gardening,farmFood is the primary source of fuel for our bodies, but also the best - and potentially worst - medicine for our health. But some people are called by the sirens' song of beauty and power of severe weather. This unique breed of individuals run into the storms to photograph and video, as well as alert and stand prepared to help with search and rescue. The information they provide can give experts great insight into the storms, to help quantify them and improve future predictions.  But mostly, the  are drawn to the thrill of the hunt, and the majesty of nature's most awesome force. Today we talk to two local storm chasers. Allison Marshall, an energetic young woman and Stephen Locke, a soft-spoken, calm, experinced man, very different and yet very much alike. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Today, we focus on two faith-based programs doing just that. One in Owensboro, KY, called "A Simple Path" is operated by Chef Kim Jagoe and Chef Cristin Pelsor, where people from a local homeless shelter learn life skills as they master the culinary arts, and feed a hungry public each week. The other is operated by our friends who run the Kansas City Community Kitchen, called "Culinary Crossroads" - a program to assist anyone who has barriers to entering the job market, whether homeless, low-skilled, have a prior criminal record, or any other similiar circumstances. They are taught, not just how to cook, but how to budget, how to interview for a job, how to manage their lives and function in society. It was a priviledge to speak with these people, motivated by a real concern for their fellow human beings, who are making a difference, everyday.  Today on Everyday KC! www.everyday-kc.com 00:48:00EverydayKCnohomeless,teaching,culinary,food,underpriviledgedThere is a famous old Chinese proverb that says, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. The airline founded by expert aviators, built through exceptional customer service, cutting-edge technology and an unprecedented loyalty to its employees. Truly the airline of the Stars through much of the 20th Century, TWA called Kansas City home for most of its existence. Today, we get an incredible history lesson from former TWA flight attendant and now historian, Kaye Chandler. She is a walking encyclopedia of the airline's remarkable story. She takes us back to the halcyon days, when air travel was chic and glamorous. When gentlemen wore hats and ties on board, and the ladies donned their finest dresses and jewels. When service wasn't a bag of peanuts and half-cup of coffee. It meant a real meal, prepared by a chef, served on china with silverware. You will not want to miss a minute of this interview.  And she tells us about the TWA museum at the Wheeler Downtown Airport, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary next weekend - May 18th - with food, drinks and dignitaries, included the grand daughter of TWA co-founder, Paul Richter.  It's all TWA today on Everyday KC www.everyday-kc.com01:02:00EverydayKCnoTWA,Aviation,History,Howard Hughes,TravelOf all the amazing stories in Kansas City history, perhaps none is more compelling than that of Trans World Airlines. How one faith-based organization has turned the "soup kitchen" into an oasis of nutrition, health and hope. Back in 1992, Bill Clinton's campaign strategist, James Carville famously coined the phrase, "The economy, stupid!"  That straight-forward declaration drives home two points. First, how fundamentally important the economy is to most of us, and secondly, how little we really understand about it.    Kansas City is home to some of the most innovative and important economic minds in the world. The economics department at the University of Missouri at Kansas City is the epicenter of an economic philosophy that calls to task both political sides, and has helped redefine the debate.    Today on Everyday KC? we are honored to be able to get our nerd on! We have as our very special guest, Dr. L. Randall Wray, a professor of economics at UMKC, and senior scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Dr. Wray is considered by many to be one of the most important and out-spoken voices in the field of economics, worldwide.    If you think the talking heads on TV news really understand how the US economy works, then what Dr. Wray has to say will surprise you. He pulls no punches, takes on all comers and calls out some o the most influential of his own peers. All with a quiet, wry sense of humor and an ability to communicate even the most arcane and complex issues in easily understood, common-sense terms.    Our hope is that this show helps open up the dialogue about the economy to include not just the usual political party's talking points.    Listen at 10:00 on Everyday KC  www.everyday-kc.com01:01:00EverydayKCnoeconomy,modern money theory,L. When we asked for show topic ideas, many have suggested we talk to experts on how to negotiate the turbulent times, and confusing healthcare system, to provide the highest quality of life for those we love who are dealing with long-term diseases. It's a difficult subject matter, but we have two very knowledgeable, passionate and empathetic guests today. Dr Karin Porter-williamson?, MD, one of Kansas City's top Palliative Care & Hospice physicians, and Cheryl Daugherty?, RN, who has over three decades of experience in nursing, most of it with critically ill patients and families - and an expert at patient and family education.    If you have faced, or are facing a loved one with a long-term disease, or nearing the end of life, you will want to hear the caring and crucial advice from these experts.    And our first-hand review of the party of the year - Kansas City CARE Clinic?'s "Bloom" fundraiser!   All on Everyday KC? today at 10:00 - and on podcast any time after.    www.everyday-kc.com01:05:00EverydayKCnoPalliative Care,Hospice,Illness,Healthcare,Quality of LifeSo many of our listeners have recently experienced the protracted illness and eventual passing of friends and loved ones. This may be the most fun we've ever had putting a show together. We learned of this close, loving band of food gypsies in Kansas City, called the food truck community. They love each other's food, have each other's back, and have a deep affection and respect for each other.  And who wouldn't love their food? We're not talking "roach coach" or "hot dog cart" here. This is real, serious gourmet food. Believe it or not, some of the best, most creative, most authentic food is served out of the side of a Chevy step van or a Dodge Sprinter, on a curb side near you.  Join us as we get to know the great people, and their amazing passion, that LITERALLY "drives" some of the best food in town.  www.everyday-kc.com for even more information.  00:52:00EverydayKCnofood trucks, gourmet, food,Kansas City, authenticThis may be the most fun we've ever had putting a show together.
