Upon my arrival I will be met by Animal Activists Network who will be hosting me and supporting me with everything I need for this event. During this challenge I will be simulating Lolita’s life as much as I can. I will experience the same feelings of captivity, separation from my family, boredom and stress that Lolita has had to endure every day for the last 45 years! After doing all I could for Lolita from the comfort of my own home I still had this overwhelming need to do more for her. It’s a feeling I find hard to describe to other people but signing petitions and emailing letters to Palace Entertainment just weren’t cutting it! I had this lump in my throat when I would think of her and her awful capture, what she must be feeling and what her family went through! Some people would say that’s anthropomorphism (the attribution of human traits, emotions and intentions to non-human entities) but I call it empathy and compassion for another living being. To try and overcome this need I eventually came up with the idea to live in a bath tub for a month. I got the idea from some PETA activists who spent a day in a bath for a demonstration as well as from every captive cetacean demonstration I had seen online, as they all had the analogy of an orca or dolphin in a bath tub. I knew it would have to be longer than a day so as to gain as much attention for Lolita as possible. I came up with a month (30days) as it was an even number and sounded better than a few weeks. Of the 8 live strandings, 2 (bulls) were released, 2 were deemed non-releasable after undergoing rehabilitation, and 4 died or were humanely euthanized. The 2 non-releasable animals are in permanent care at SeaWorld (one calf now named Fredi, and one named Hundy with severe scoliosis suffered at the hands of MMC). R300 aka Hundy died in captivity at SeaWorld. Dr. Maas and world's marine mammal scientists urge immediate action. Under current protection levels, Maui’s dolphins will become practically extinct by 2030 as a result of fishing. In a letter to New Zealand’s Prime Minister, the Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) urges the government to ban gillnets and trawling in Maui’s dolphin habitat immediately to avoid their extinction. With a membership of some 2,000 scientists from 60 countries, the SMM is the world's largest professional body dedicated to research on marine mammals and the ecosystems that support them. The letter highlights that fishing nets alone kill about nine percent of an estimated population of 55 individuals over one year of age, which will render Maui’s dolphins virtually extinct in less than 20 years. Barbara took up the position as Head of International Species Conservation for NABU International in 2009. Her current conservation work includes snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan, tigers in India, elephants in Africa, lions in Tanzania’s Serengeti, and Hector’s & Maui’s dolphins in New Zealand. She was appointed Secretary for the International Buddhist Confederation’s (IBC) Standing Committee on Environment and Conservation in 2013. On October 30th Dr Barbara Maas and Maui's dolphin expert Dr Liz Slooten from the New Zealand's University of Otago hand over petitions signed by 150,000 concerned people from around the world. He raced in the Louisville Ironman this past August dedicating that race to the Taiji, Japan dolphins that are slaughtered every year starting September 1st. After seeing the movie “Blackfish” and “The Cove”, Nathan and his wife started Blackfish Racing which promotes three non-profit organizations, OPS Oceanic Preservation Society, Ric O’Barry Dolphin Project, and The Orca Network. Growing up in Washington state on Whidbey Island, Nathan’s roots are closely tied to the ocean and the Puget Sound area. He will be dedicating the 70.3 Ironman Miami race to the orca known as Lolita who was kidnapped from the Puget Sound area 44 years ago and has been held captive in the smallest tank in North America at the Miami Seaquarium.
