Joel M. Skousen is a non-fiction Survivalist author and an experienced retreat consultant who specializes in preparedness topics, particularly survival retreat and fallout shelter design and construction. He is the author of one of the most astute and detailed books about what he calls "strategic relocation."  His book, Strategic Relocation, is based on the premise that good people could turn around the societal problems of this country––but won’t!

Mr. Skousen is one of the original pioneers in the survival and preparedness field. He has designed high-security residences and retreats throughout North America for 30 years before his retirement in 1998.

In this interview with Doctor Prepper, Mr. Skousen discusses the value of strategic thinking—soft thinking makes soft people, and soft people don’t do well in times of severe crises.

Skousen's latest two books, The Secure Home, and Strategic Relocation--North American Guide to Safe Places, address the myriad of economic, biological, and political threats that face families living in today's complex world. Mr. Skousen’s books also serve as guides for families wishing to relocate to a more secure area and become self-sustaining.
