For most of our existence in America, the nation has needed us—for free labor, for cheap labor, for scapegoating and for the raping of our culture. But America has co-opted Black Culture to the point where it is currently packaging what it deems to be Black Culture and selling it back to us. It has other cultures to use for cheap labor and, of course, we are still scapegoats. There is no reason for us to exist. We have been so diminished that we don't want to live around us and many of us think the worst of us. With no real need for us to exist, it is quite possible that the African American will diminish into irrelevance. That hotline would connect them to a Black Man to blame. The joke isn’t really a joke because in American, the Black Man is blamed for everything. Remember Susan Smith? Think about it: A city is designated as the “murder capitol” because of the number of Black men who murder each other—even though the number of whites who murder each other is higher. We are blamed for violence, rape of white women, children out of wedlock and even for our own destruction. The problem with Black male bashing used to be that it came ONLY from the hearts and minds of vicious racist mongrels who were too ignorant to realize that one group of people could not be responsible for the destruction of an entire society. Well, perhaps one group can, but we’ll leave that for another column. Currently, some of the meanest, hateful propaganda about Black men comes from other Black people. And, now the old Black male bashing is becoming the new Black male bashing because “The Color Purple” just won’t seem to die and thanks to the sellout of all Black manhood personified in Tyler Perry, more Black male bashing drivel is being recycled. Where does it end? Listen to The Bridge Radio tomorrow at 4pm Pacific as we discuss the demonization of Black Men. The history of popular music in America is indeed the history of the taking of Black music, from the early days of Rock to the current days of Hip Hop. Robin Thicke is a glaring example of what can go wrong and Iggy Azalea is an example of everything that is wrong. Is there a difference between being "inspired" by music that someone else created and outright stealing it? What about sampling in Hip Hop? There is some real hatred out there and we need to fucs. Some of these ignorant cops in America are hateful and that is real. There are racists at large who hate others. And, some of us even hate ourselves. Then, there is the hatred across the gender divide that rears its ugly head whenever discussions are held about relationship issues. We have to choose between loving each other or embracing the growing acrimony that is festering on both sides of the gender divide. Black males and females are at war with each other in many corners of this nation. Hateful things are being said back and forth, and things are getting critical. I’ve been trying to move people by tapping into the hot topics that cut deep into human nature. The upside is that some of us are awake and realize that even if we disagree, we can still be committed to our people, or at least have a discussion about the divergences. The downside is that many of us have no idea how to have a conversation. I get literal demands from people to have discussions with them after they have cursed me or disrespected me in their disagreement with me. We have to decide if we are going to hate or love and then proceed with discussions, dating, loving and living. It was the year that Black people woke up and began to push back against a system that marginalizes them and a system that supported the wanton murder of Black people by the police. While police have been abusing and murdering Black people for a long time, in 2014, Blacks began to protest after the justice system sat down and supported murder by cop. Black people stood up and launched the longest protest since the 1960s. When Blacks stood up, other people joined the protest—around the nation and around the world. And now, a change must come. In 2014, hackers became revolutionaries, exposing racists in high places—particularly the film industry, which has been racist for a long time in practice, but has now been exposed for being racist in speech as well. This from an industry that thought it was okay to make a “funny” film about murdering the leader of a sovereign nation. A change must come. 2014 was a year of losses and a year of gains. It was a year of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer and a year of people getting tired of getting their asses kicked. But I know, a change gone come. The season is represented by silver and gold adorned trees, as well as colorful twinkling lights spilling over homes, churches and businesses. Family and friends exchange gifts, kiss under mistletoe, burn Yule logs and yet, sadly, most people have no idea where the Christmas holiday traditions come from, but they swear that it is all about Jesus. It was natural and Blacks felt him without even thinking about it. It was an expression of his soul Soul was never truly pursued by Black folks, because most of us were just born with it. Soul was as innate as our ability to absorb the rays of the sun without destruction to our skin. But in a nation where everything has been commoditized, even the Soul of Black folks as well as their literal souls are for sale on the open market, which means that our Soul is no longer natural and endemic to us. Soul is now for sale and we are not even the purveyors of the Soul that once came from us. In previous times, Soul came from the Black community organically and only then was it marketed and sold to the world. Brother James Brown was ours and THEN the world claimed him. With music and all other things cool, we created it and then the world took hold of it because we said it was cool. Now, a watered-down, backwards version of Soul is manufactured and purveyed to us as though it is our very own. But it is not. The Soul that we see today on the open market has been stolen and twisted. The stealing of our Soul should come as no surprise to anyone aware, because we were already selling it in a nation that has never treasured having a soul. I take it as part of my duty as an educated and enlightened Black man-to stand in front of young Black boys and young Black men to show them their own possibilities, because I come from the same places from whence many of them hail. Sometimes, I am joined by other Black men, within whom the fear and awkwardness is so apparent I nearly feel sorry for them. They feel awkward because of the lies some of us believe that we have "arrived." There is fear because we have merely bought into the empty promise of America--the illusion of the melting pot and the reward for pretending that there are no racial barriers and that hard work and education are always rewarded for everyone. The belief in this illusion is the intrinsic barrier between open and honest communication with the youth, because they are still wise enough to know that there is a problem. Some of them embrace that problem as a reason to work twice as hard, while some of them embrace that problem as a reason to give up. But sadly, many grown men are in derelict of duty, because frankly, we are afraid of what we escaped from, and/or whom we left behind. And so we tell them lies. Lies to cover our fear and lies to cover our mistakes. And Blacks are afraid of so much more. Many of the people who still think barely do so, often allowing others to dictate their thoughts or to simply think for them. And because they do not think for themselves, they are easily led down a road to diminishing sophistication and the deterioration of socialization and civility. It’s not a very long road either. People who have little thought processing typically move from thought to action without any filters or hesitation. This is why knee-jerk reaction is the order of the day. And because we are no longer demanding that our citizens be thinking people, they react like children, wanting instant gratification and throwing tantrums when it doesn’t come. It is the reason why adults are overly sexual with no attention to consequences and the reason why simple-minded reality shows fare well with the overabundance of simple-minded people. I believe that Black people need to change our minds about us and begin to embrace the things that are uniquely Black. We have to love those things, while loving ourselves. Black people in America are a special and wonderful blend of horrible oppression, faith, hope, creativity, spirituality and unresolved issues. No matter how bad things are, we still have what it takes to make it better. Haven’t we always? Yes, and I love that about us. For all the problems, the ups and downs of being part of the most challenged race on the planet, there is nothing more beautiful than walking, talking and dancing in the sun as Black people. We are the party and everyone wants to attend. It’s time for us to celebrate. Many of them are young men who are just starting their lives and are already disadvantaged. Empowering our youth will help them make better decisions when dealing with the police, but also help them to avoid situations where the police have to be involved. Empowering our youth also means providing them with the tools to interact with police that will decrease the chances of a negative outcome. Police must be held accountable for their actions, but our youth must also be given tools to help them understand how to interact with police. This week on "The Bridge" Radio, Special Guest Lloyd Scott will share his experience as an LAPD officer and take us inside proactive interaction with cops and ways to empower our youth. Scott is a Christian Minister and a 26 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department. Fifteen of those years were spent as a Gang Intervention Liaison, developing and implementing the city's gang intervention program. Observing the dangers young men of color face, he now focuses on uplifting and restoring youth through empowerment methods, including directing them to services available to them. But how many of us have actually internalized the meaning of the words? Perhaps some dear friend has committed a crime of distrust. Or, perhaps a family member has committed a crime of deceit, theft, or mistrust. And, for those of us who love, a lover may have committed a crime of infidelity. Instead of forgiving the person and allowing them to have a second chance, many of us choose to move on and take a new chance with a stranger who may repeat the offense or commit a new one. An old saying goes: "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know." A friend has a moment of weakness and betrays your trust or cheats you. But the moment of weakness may dictate that the friend really needs you, and seeing him or her through that moment may make your friendship stronger and that person whole. A close family member cheats you or steals money from you. In the end, you weren’t put out badly and the loved one absolutely needed the money.  In all of these cases, absolution may be in order. But do we even know how to forgive? Do we know what forgiveness is? Join Darryl James on Sunday at 4p Pacific Time, as he discusses Forgiveness with special guest Carla L. Garrett, author of "Bouncing Back After Dropping The Ball--18 Life Lessons on the Journey To Forgiveness," a mixture of a novel and a “how-to” book, specifically, a book on how to forgive.  Discuss Forgiveness with Host Darryl James and Co-Hosts, Tracy Powell, Marcus Legall III, Dr. John Hamilton & DJ Gates. 01:58:00Darryl Jamesnoforgiveness, absolution, forgive, darryljames, carlalgarrett"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." --The Lord’s Prayer We've all heard that passage before--Christian, Muslim, Jew andFood & Death: An American Conundrumhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/darryljames/2014/09/28/food-death-an-american-conundrumPoliticshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/darryljames/2014/09/28/food-death-an-american-conundrum/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/darryljames/2014/09/28/food-death-an-american-conundrumSun, 28 Sep 2014 23:00:00 GMTFood & Death: An American ConundrumWe’ve all seen the commercials showing the starving children in other countries. The announcer asks us to send money so that families, particularly the children can eat regular meals. In some countries, there are people who simply can not get enough to eat. One of those countries is the United States of America. There are people dying in this nation because they can not get enough to eat. And people who are dying because they get too much to eat. In the past decade, the population of obese people in America has almost doubled. It’s the nation’s number one cause of preventable death and it’s now a health crisis. Where are the commercials showing the overweight Americans who are dying? There are commercials, but they are hardly showing obesity for the death sentence that it truly is. You see, in America, while throngs of people are dying and becoming ill--most specifically from diabetes and hypertension--the outlook on being overweight is skewed, as some portray the condition as "sexy" and still some portray being overweight as "healthy."  Ostensibly, the goal is to counter the taunting and name calling slung at overweight people, while creating ways for them to feel good about themselves.  But some of the propaganda and pageantry promoting the "beauty" of the overweight lifestyle has gone too far, providing for many an escape from reality and an excuse for not addressing serious health issues. Americans are growing larger and dying earlier and unnecessarily. And redefining our feelings about being fat and/or being overweight won't stop that. An understanding of what is at stake may help.   Discuss American Food Issues with Host Darryl James and Co-Hosts, Tracy Powell, Marcus Legall III, Dr. John Hamilton & DJ Gates. 02:00:00Darryl Jamesnoobesity, starvation, malnutrition, diabetes, hypertensionWe’ve all seen the commercials showing the starving children in other countries. He left marks on a four year old, which seems excessive to many of us. Franky, it assaults our sensibilities. But the public debate is larger than whethere Peterson abused his child or not. The debate is actually over whether corporal punishment is necessary or effective. We've come a long way from public floggings, but  some thing that we've not come so far that we still don't need to pass out an ass whipping every now and again. Some say a return to corporal punishment will provide some perspective for out of control children. Otherwise, let's get rid of the schools we complain about and leave the children at home. For every discussion about what the school system needs to do, there needs to be a discussion about what parents need to do. And instead of simply looking to add more duties to an already overtaxed and nearly failing school system, we should place more of the focus on parental training. After all, you have to learn how to drive a car, but no one is trained on being a parent. There are a number of things that are wrong with the way we are leaving the world to the next generation, but the overarching problem with today’s youth is that some of them really do need hands placed on them. Some kids may turn out fine with the permissiveness and timeout behavior modification methods, but others need their natural asses kicked. Today's discussion on "The Bridge" will focus on discipline of children and examining the line between discipline and abuse. Co-hosts, Tracy Powell, Dr. John Hamilton, Marcus D. They love having us on the news, but the coverage is largely relegated to perpetual poverty, crime and other "bad" behavior. While we are neither the dominant nor the majority population, the negative media coverage is disproportionately high when it comes to us. Many of our other difficulties stem from that poor media coverage, which leads many to believe that there are more of us doing bad things than there really are. It also leads many to the belief that, accordingly, there are less of us doing good and positive things, except for those laughing Negroes on comedy shows. It is no secret that African Americans have an image problem. It is also no secret that the media misrepresents African Americans. What is ostensibly a secret is that many of the most egregious things being said about Black people are actually being perpetuated by Black people. Are there more Black men in prison than college? Are most Black men in prison? Are Black women being infected with HIV by secret gay Black men? It only works for kids who won't be too far out of line in the first place. Of course there were problems with corporal punishment in the classroom, including abuse by teachers who went too far and accidental injuries, but to allow children too much latitude will provide them with a skewed vision of how the world works. For some humans, the result will be a life of out of control situations, based on that skewed vision of the world. Today, after three decades of permissiveness, many of our kids are out of control. And instead of simply looking to add more duties to an already overtaxed and nearly failing school system, we should place more of the focus on parental training. After all, you have to learn how to drive a car, but no one is trained on being a parent. Today’s youth rarely show respect for their elders and to be honest, it’s not entirely their fault. Modern chivalry worked fairly well before the contemporary women’s rights movement when women began to reject traditional roles and behavior, including many of the roles and behavior required for garnering chivalrous behavior from men. For example, the part of chivalry that dictated that men pay for all dates is outdated, stemming from a time when women either didn’t work or worked in jobs that paid very little. With so many women claiming to be outpacing men, dating should not be centered around the unbending rule that men always pay. That’s a very short history for a people with such a rich background. It is extremely important to embrace and celebrate the original consciousness of the African people, as opposed to focusing only on the achievements of these people after they arrived in America. As a people, we become fragmented, because some of us want no attachment to Africa and some of us want no attachment to America. Black History Month, which began as Black History week is a great concept, but it should continue to evolve as our consciousness evolves. African History Living should be year round, and the celebration must be a constant inward journey of our self to the root of our existence, beginning with the re-evaluation of the modern African under Western thought. We must choose between Black Thought and African Thought. You can’t know where you are going until you know where you’ve been. Does Black History begin with slavery? I say that there is far too much discussion because the focus is only external, never internal. In other words, everyone is willing to talk about any and all reasons for the sizeable pool of unmarried Black women, but those reasons never include decisions made by the Black women who are unmarried. The essential problem with such discussions is that the presentation is one of a poor, suffering Black woman and a sorry, unfit Black man. Frankly, whether anyone wants to hear it or not, I believe that a great portion of the Black women who are over 35 and unmarried have simply made some choices that have lead them to their current state. This show will focus on some of the reasons why Black women aren’t getting married that are not necessarily connected to sorry Black men. Some Black women are following that lead. While hating on Black men at every turn, a specific type of Black woman (angry, bitter and crazy as hell) claims that ALL Black men hate ALL Black women. The world is tired of seeing stories with the following themes: “Do Black Men Still Love Black Women?” “Are Black Men Abandoning Black Women And Children?” And “Life Without Black Men.” The failure of some Black women to get married is not because Black men are down low, in prison or married to white women.
