The public has always had contempt for treating disease with nutrition:  historically calling the English sailors "Limeys" because sailors took limes on ships to avoid scurvy. Not all people with schizophrenia respond well to nutritional programs, and we are grateful for antipsychotic medications to keep patients and families safer and happier. Clarissa and Jennifer will explore some different ways of thinking about schizophrenia, and "craziness". We will be talking about what we think is important for patients, families, and culture around this very uncomfortable, potentially misery-provoking condition. Who is more paranoid? The public or the patients? We'll look at how stigma keeps us from solutions for this mental health condition that is on the rise, and affects 9 out of 1000 people in our population. We have hope and positive solutions to offer, including the possibility of writing grants for nutritional programs at board and care facilities.  We also are on a mission to find treatment and programs already in place that you know of to treat schizophrenia, so if you are witnessing our conversation, we appeal to you to share what you know. Our goal is to examine treatment that might reduce thought disorder symptoms to below diagnosable levels so that people currently afflicted can marry, have children, and function well.
