Our guest, Catharine Delong is a music-thanatologist which as she explains is a practitioner who,"…tends to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of dying individuals”. In her case, she accomplishes this through the use of live harp and voice at the client’s bedside. She explains, “Music at the bedside calms the nervous system of both patients and their loved ones…pain may be lessened, anxiety reduced and respiration relaxed”. Catharine continues, ”The work of the music-thanatologist can change the energy in a room from fear and chaos to peace and beauty”. Catherine began playing the harp at age 11 and later worked as a freelance musician and a harp salesperson. She tells us, “upon examining my life in my mid-fifties, and asking myself how I might mindfully live the remainder of my years, music-thanatology was the answer". We are blessed in this episode that Catharine brought her traveling harp with her and shared a piece of her healing music.
