Where do you stand on the issue of legalizing marijuana? Our guest this week is Chad McDonald a Psychotherapist and Addiction Counselor and he has some very powerful and interesting information on this “hot” topic in today’s news. Chad began his work life as a school teacher and over time became aware of the problems of substance abuse in other teachers, administrators and students. As he looked into the issue further he realized that the problem was every where and he felt compelled to move into the field by going back to school and becoming a certified Addiction Counselor. He currently works as a psychotherapist at Silver Hills Hospital in Connecticut. He finds the work very rewarding and at the same time frustrating as the success rate for substance abuse rehabilitation is not very high. As he explains, “recovery from the disease of addiction is difficult and requires a large effort on the part of the patient to take action such as therapy to uncover the underlying issues that led to starting on the path to addiction”. A problem that he points out is that mandatory jail sentences for possession of even a small amount of drugs does not solve anything. He would prefer that judges had the option to sentence a person to rehabilitation instead of jail, where appropriate.
