She and her husband Craig, have three beautiful children who are now young adults. Her son, whom  they adopted at a young age from Foster Care  began to have struggles and challenges  in his pre teen years.  With very little support systems avaliable for Adoptive families at that time, and no Adoption Competant or  Trauma Informed  Mental Health Providers  they were unable to sustain their son in their home. The only option being Foster Care, they unwillingly placed him in care for services but were very clear they were going to continue to be his parents. Always wanting what was best for their son, they held on and fought the system to advocate for him to recieve appropriate service. Without this they felt their son would be lost to a system where children were just numbers. The strength it took for the entire family to survive was incredible. Now Adults , Life has come full circle and their son is back in thier lives. Retake, Following Your Dreams to Make a DifferenceAfter technical difficulties we are back  with the FULL interview with Susan McConnell, Adoptive mom and Ceo of Let it Be Us!. In her own words... As an adoptive mother, I founded Let it Be Us because I know how important it is that every child lives in, and is loved by, a family.  I have worked with the State of Illinois for over a decade with the goal of finding families for children in the foster care system who are available for adoption.  I’ve spent intimate time with these very adoptable children who do not have families and I’ve wondered why.  The fact that the United States has over 100,000 children in the foster care system who are legally available for adoption is simply unacceptable. Finally, as the recipient of a congressional award for my work in foster care, I have a responsibility and a passion toward this project.Let it Be Us is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to adoption and education of children in Illinois foster care. Funds raised go toward programs and projects that maximize the prospects of successful adoptions for these children.  We also use our funds to better care for the older children who will never have the opportunity to be adopted.  Through our Educational Mentorship Program, we provide tutoring and scholarships for these children so that they can care for and support themselves as they move out into the world. In short, if we can’t give them parents, we can at least give them an education.
