Since 1989, the African American Advocacy, Support-Services & Survival Institute (AmASSI Center) has provided healing to thousands of African American and Latino men, women, and children. Originally based in Oakland, California, AmASSI centers are now located in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York and soon, Washington, DC. Much of the Center's success rests in its focus on cultural affirmation and crossing conventional boundaries. In this episode of CLEonair, we talk with founder Cleo Manago about why conventional approaches to community wellness have failed so many African American, Latino and other communities of color, and why the Center's holistic and culturally affirmaing approach works.
