Margo Rey's music has captured audiences worldwide with unforgettable melodies and connection to life's greatest struggles. Her biggest hit, "Let the Rain" — co-written with the legendary John Oates — remained on the charts for 21 weeks. She then generated more than 2 million dollars with the song to benefit the non-profit Brides Against Breast Cancer (BABC). Margo Rey began performing at just 11 years of age. A native of Mexico, she's fluent in English and Spanish, and possesses conversational skills in French and Italian. It's no wonder she's been able to deliver her alternative pop songs in eight languages! Now, Margo isn't only promoting the "I Do!" campaign for BABC, she's also teamed up with her husband Ron White on a Darelicious challenge to raise $10K! Margo says, "education and personal support are just as critical as prompt medical treatment." She volunteered her time to be the national ambassador for "Brides Against Breast Cancer" while undergoing chemotherapy and planning her own wedding to the famous comedian and actor Ron "Tater Salad" White. Margo is also about to re-release her holiday EP, This Holiday Night just in time for the holiday season featuring the original title track, “Silent Night,” and “Toyland” and just recorded  a Spanish version of “This Holiday Night.” We'll share some of Margo Rey's latest music and hear about Ron White's hilarious dare campaign in support of BABC, as well as get his take on being a caregiver.   01:06:00Because Hope Matters RadionoMargo Rey,Ron White,Brides Against Breast Cancer,Darelicious ChallengeMargo Rey joined us earlier this year to share her incredible music and charitable work with Brides Against Breast Cancer, as well as her own journey through thAn Inside Look at Surviving Cancer: Our Voices and Choiceshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2014/10/20/an-inside-look-at-surviving-cancer-our-voices-and-choicesFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2014/10/20/an-inside-look-at-surviving-cancer-our-voices-and-choices/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2014/10/20/an-inside-look-at-surviving-cancer-our-voices-and-choicesMon, 20 Oct 2014 23:00:00 GMTAn Inside Look at Surviving Cancer: Our Voices and ChoicesMarion Behr is an accomplished visual artist, publisher, and author, and she's on a mission to help others in quite an extraordinary fashion. Tucked inside Surviving Cancer: Our Voices & Choices, she has compiled and illustrated a collection of essays, reflections, and artwork. Sifting through the compilation, readers are immersed in a sense of hope through art and story. Marion Behr provides a remarkable illustration of the hope that prevails when survivors, organizations, care teams and others align themselves as a healing force in the cancer battle, and beyond. This timeless source book is written, in part, by cancer survivors of different ages who provide insight into personal experiences and choices -- to ease the way for new cancer patients. Doctors’ articles are arranged to correspond with the order of visits experienced by most cancer patients. Personal narrations afford a view of cancer survivors' stories across the United States and Canada and as far away as Cambodia and Israel. Marion created the first national survey of women working from home in the 1970's and originated the concept of the Homebased Business, and then formed Women Working Home Inc. with Wendy Lazar. Together, they co-authored two editions of Women Working Home: The Homebased Business Guide and Directory,  and sold fifty thousand copies.  Marion later received a Presidential Appointment to The White House Conference on Small Business and her presentations to the US Labor Department and Senate helped change laws on home based businesses. Cancer affects us all. Whether you've fought the battle or loved another through it, the journey is personal and profound. Join us to hear what it takes to organize a world-collaboration for the sake of helping others more deeply understand survivors' voices and choices. Triple negative breast cancer is one of the most aggressive types and doesn't respond well to known treatment protocols. Specifically-targeted research is urgently needed, and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center is dedicating the time, talent, and team to do it. We'll revisit with Sheila Jones of Team Martina to hear exciting updates on the Martina McBride Breast Cancer Research Grant. The grant helped make strides in triple negative research over the last year, honoring of a teammate who died of the disease. Now, there's more potential for the grant with a "Coffee for a Cure" campaign and it's gone nationwide. The community initiative shows the impact when people come together for good. Dr. Vandana Abramson will join us, too. She's a breast cancer physician and researcher at Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. After receiving her B.A. in English and Molecular & Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, she went to medical school at the University of Chicago. Dr. Abramson completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Harvard University's Brigham and Women's Hospital.  She then went on to complete a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.  She also obtained a Master's degree in Translational Research. Dr. Abramson research focuses on early stage clinical trials of novel treatments for all types of breast cancers, and she has received grants to study triple negative breast cancer.  She has received awards for her clinical and research work and is currently leading clinical trials in breast cancer, both at Vanderbilt and nationally.  Don't miss this extraordinary hour of updates! 01:06:00Because Hope Matters RadionoDuring Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it's a special honor to feature the heart-work of Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Team Martina. CURE Magazine takes the time to recognize exemplary oncology nurses through an "Extraordinary Healer Award." The annual recognition attracts hundreds of essay submissions from patients, survivors, and caregivers across the nation. We're thrilled to provide another spotlight for CURE's recent award winner, Cindi Cantril. Essayist, Ann Tallman, wrote about her journey as a breast cancer survivor. Her portrayal of Cantril's care through diagnosis, surgery and treatment caught the attention of Kathy LaTour, editor-at-large at CURE Magazine. The giving, nurturing, and inspiring nature embedded in Cantril's fiber goes above and beyond. She created peer-to-peer support for patients; the "WINGS" Program helps women with all types of cancer, and a secondary WINGMEN group helps men. Cantril's drive to provide healing programs doesn't stop there; she also operates women's cancer retreats and Equine therapy. Among more than 750 of her peers and guest speaker, actor, producer, director and best-selling author Rob Lowe, and the cancer care community, Cantril received the distinguished award. She has provided more than 40 years of research, clinical care, program development and leadership in oncology nursing care. She has published over a dozen articles and authored several chapters of Building Legacy - Voices of Oncology Nurses. Cantril also received the Oncology Nursing Society's Distinguished Service Award in 2010, among other honors on her career path. The loss of personal identity in advanced Alzheimer's disease. Life stolen away too soon by cancer's wrath. Financial havoc due to illness, disability, or death. Jean Bota has made it her life's mission to assist hurting people in the process of self-discovery and renewed hope.  With 33 years in the banking industry, Jean has witnessed and counseled people through some of their darkest times. "Change comes with a range of emotional responses, defense mechanisms and deep emotional states," she says. "Change brings profound questions: Who do I see? How can I navigate this change? What will I do? How do I initiate the change?" In 2001 Jean experienced the sudden death of her husband which took her on a path of self-discovery and into a deeper spiritual awareness. Her loss transformed her, intensified her spiritual life, and awakened her; resulting in a return to college to further her education. It assisted the opening of creativity and restoration of self-confidence. As her losses became mingled with her education, she came to realize that many in the world had lost compassion and concern for others. She saw rational, logical and packaged formulas for coping with loss, which created a disconnect between individuals and their emotions. She felt compelled to develop new strategies; ones that recognized transitions are as natural as night and day. Jean Bota says, "there is no beginnings and no endings, just adventure in life. As human beings we also experience changes in our lives; many anticipated and some sudden and unpredicted. One has to live those feelings of loss to truly understand the effects they have on individuals." Join us in this episode to dig deeper after loss. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is focused on children of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members, as well as children of Wounded and Fallen Warriors from all branches of service.  Linda Davidson and Gail Kruzel founded Our Military Kids in 2004 out of concern for school-age children of Reserve and National Guard members and the lack of family support services. With the sacrifice of being apart for months at a time, they observed families so financially stretched that they couldn't afford fees for sports, fine arts, and tutoring.  Filled with compassion, Linda and Gail laid the groundwork to obtain grants to pay the associated fees to help relieve separation stress and improve emotional stability, while building self-esteem and enabling academic achievement. Grants from Our Military Kids are made possible by generous contributions from corporations, charitable foundations, and individuals. The hard work and commitment of volunteers is the backbone of the non-profit, translating into more grant money available to children of deployed National Guardsmen and Reservists, as well as Wounded Warriors. With a Charity Navigator score of 100 for accountability and transparency, mass media interest is no surprise. ICA for Alzheimer's and Dementia Caregiving is "source solution" oriented. Physicians, nurses and home healthcare givers gain techniques to improve cooperation, reduce stress, and help build networks. Facility Administrators and Caregivers acquire care solutions to improve quality of life for everyone impacted by dementia, while enhancing operations and reducing costs. Healthcare students benefit from learning techniques and applications that make a meaningful difference. For anyone seeking to learn how to care for or improve the quality of care, ICA provides it -- compassionately around the world day and night with information, tools, and techniques. "Because every human life is sacred, individuals living with Alzheimer’s/dementia must be able to feel safe, retain a sense of independence, be respected and treated ethically." Through online accredited training and ambitious teams around the world in South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, Dr.Ethelle Lord (President of ICA) is promoting a mission doused in her life's passion. Presentations are scheduled at the 24th Annual Conference of Alzheimer's Europe and 9th International Conference on Frontotemporal Dementias. Dr. Lord's realization of the great need for adopting a uniform way of delivering dementia care to professionals and families came through her own caregiving journey. Laughter is truly medicine, however. In fact, it lowers stress, increases serotonin (feel good hormone) in the brain, helps the immune system function better, and makes people more comfortable around one another. The Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation understands those benefits in an incredibly unique way. Their mission is to provide families with opportunities to enjoy beaches, sunsets, sports, music and roller coasters – while head-on in the fight with late-stage cancer.  Jon Albert knows first-hand about the devastation cancer causes. After losing his wife the week before Thanksgiving in 2006, Jon persevered on the path they had paved together to treat families to a WOW! experience. Oncologists now prescribe his Jack and Jill LateStage Cancer Foundation (JAJF) to families, as part of the treatment protocol. There have been amazing advances in cancer; yet, thousands of children every year still lose a parent to the disease. Jon recognizes that cancer doesn’t just strike the patient – it strikes the whole family. Jon Albert’s mantra is a sobering one:  It should not take a terminal diagnosis for us to Hurry up and Live! For 9 years, his foundation has been treating the families – not the cancer. More than 900 families in 45 states have benefited from the WOW! experiences. National in-kind partners include Shutterfly,The Coca-Cola Company, United Airlines, Avis/Budget, Ritz Carlton, and an army of others. JAJF has garnered attention from NBC Sunday Night Football, The Today Show, CBS, CNN, NBC, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. It's most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos.  During her childhood Heather von St. James did what many little girls do. She wore her daddy's jacket around the house when he came home from work -- never suspecting there was harm coming to her via that playful act.  In November 2005 at the age of 36, just three months after celebrating the birth of her daughter, she was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. The delicately risky surgery to save her life took her more than 1400 miles away from the life she'd just brought into the world. The surgery performed at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital consisted of removing the lining of the lung, an entire lung, half of her diaphragm, the lining of her heart and her sixth rib. That marked the beginning of her journey to survive and her battle with what she calls "scanxiety." Motherhood and marriage interspersed with doses of humor and faith have strengthened her when anxiety and the fear of recurrence hit home. She's now celebrating her 8th year as a survivor. Her mission in life is to help others with mesothelioma around the globe. Her stories of awareness and hope appear in places like The Huffington Post, Moms N' Charge, Everyday Health, interviews and hope-filled awareness blogs. When she's not busy speaking, advocating, and inspiring others, she's spends her time with husband/best-friend Cameron, volunteering at her daughter's school, planting flowers, and enjoying all things whimsical. He’s written extensively about the separation process and military benefits, to include regular contributions to Military Times, Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times and the Marine Corps Times -- in addition to providing a wealth of resourcefulness on his own website and blog. From treasuring family relationships to answering the call of duty, Steve Maieli has made it his mission to pass on veteran lessons for living and serving well.  In 2008, he founded Transitioning Veteran. Transitioning Veteran.com provides free access for all military veterans and their families looking for simple information on benefits and more. It was born out of his own transition experience from military to the civilian world in 2003. Steve quickly realized he wasn't prepared and resources weren't readily available to tap.  Fueled by frustration over the gap and difficulty in sorting through benefits information, he decided to do something about it -- something that would make a difference for generations of veterans. It’s often difficult and time-consuming to find the right information from various websites online concerning veteran’s benefits. Transitioning Veteran.com affords a centralized resource where vital information is readily available for the military community - from education to medical to employment benefits. What if a bridge literally existed between design and perception? According to Steve Orfield, it's possible, given a growing body of research suggesting that aging and decline are two separate processes. He founded Orfield Laboratories (OL) over 40 years ago, and has since turned his interest in perception and measurement towards developing multi-disciplinary subjective-objective architectural and product research lab. He recently shared his philosophy about "User Experience" at the Innovations Summit with the Florida Council on Aging among others, he's authored numerous research projects, designed the "quietest room on earth" and created the nation's first research based design architectual collaboration (with firms across the U.S. and Canda).   Steve's passion for developing new "perceptually clear and comfortable" standards for seniors was born in caregiving for his elderly father as a nursing home resident. For the same total cost of such "typical" environments, Orfield Laboratories is providing the highest level of comfort and preference, while building on precise measurement and evaluation. "You actually have to test the older population and have them repeat what they have seen or heard, because elderly persons are far less inclined to complain or to highlight their age-related disabilities," he says. The demands of caregiving can become overwhelming and lead to burnout. The symptoms of burnout are similar to the symptoms of depression: emotional and physical exhaustion, feeling irritable and helpless, changes in appetite, loss of interest in things once enjoyed. The best defenses: having a clear sense of one's role, realistic expectations, and a strong support network -- all of which can be hard to regularly attain.  But imagine if caregivers could connect and chat, day or night, with other caregivers That's The Caregiver Space, a virtual support network for family and professional caregivers, helping them manage and cope with ongoing challenges. Personal blogs and expert health articles are free and accessible. Education is provided on a plethora of topics to include mental health, physical fitness, bereavement, relaxation and sleep. It all began through a visionary caregiver, Adrienne Gruberg. Adrienne became a constant caregiver to both her husband, diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005, and his mother, who at the age of ninety in 2007, was diagnosed with lymphoma and went to live with her son and daughter-in-law in New York City. As a result of the crisis, she is the proud Founder and President of The Caregiver Space. His dissertation focuses on the proliferation of therapeutic writing and arts communities created by veterans. His newest project, a memoir entitled Turley Boys, details his life including the experiences of war and military service, and subsequent battle with PTSD.  After producing two volumes of The Journal of Military Experience, he won a grant from the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs to host a “Military Experience and the Arts” (MEA) symposium. As symposium director, Travis interacted with leaders of national grassroots communities. The event sprung up a community dedicated to providing veterans and their families access to expressive workshops and platforms.   MEA publications now include: The Journal of Military Experience, Blue Streak: A Journal of Military Poetry, The Blue Falcon Review, and The Veterans’ PTSD Project’s Blue Nostalgia: A Journal of Post-Traumatic Growth. His weekly column, "Common Sense Caregiving" is published by the Tampa Tribune and Hernando Today, as well as dozens of other publications. LeBlanc created the Alzheimer's/Dementia Hospital Wristband Project in 2013, aimed at smoother hospital stays. Now, he's co-founded Dementia Mentors to magnify understanding, dignity, and hope. Through mentoring, videos, virtual cafe meetings, brain storming session and more, LeBlanc provides a look into what goes through the mind of someone diagnosed with a form of dementia. As the author of Staying Afloat in a Sea of Forgetfulness and co-author of While I Still Can, he encourages caregivers to realize it's not a science; "every patient responds differently ... the journey is trial and error, right up to the very end,” he says. Caring for his Alzheimer's-stricken father, he learned the hardships caregivers endure. Daily journaling soon evolved into a weekly column, and more. Co-owning a father-and-son bookstore with his father served as a catalyst of sorts. First, their closeness helped him recognize his father's struggles sooner than later. Second, his foresight to compile a decade of lessons has created a vessel of hope and help to thousands. LeBlanc believes some people stop visiting loved ones with Alzheimer's because of a lack of knowledge about how to approach them. As the disease advances, it becomes increasingly difficult to communicate through ordinary methods. He encourages family and friends to “be creative; do whatever it takes to keep them engaged. Whether it's playing cards with them or having a sing-a-long, if you find something that works, stick with it for as long as possible." Currently, less than one percent of our population wears the uniform as compared to more than 12 percent during World War II. Those numbers are set to shrink even more in response to the President declaring an end to the 12-year-plus "global war on terror." Thousands of members will exit with discharge lessons in mind of the risks ahead. Perhaps, even greater challenges lie ahead for those on the other side of trauma.  Lydia Davey, a former U.S. Marine, is one of tens of thousands who experienced military sexual trauma and post-traumatic stress while serving, and beyond. As a columnist for Military 1 and The Huffington Post she's defined the lessons learned since discharge, and their application to heal, forgive, and forge ahead.  She reported that "more veterans than ever before are reporting post-traumatic stress. This is a good thing. Combat is stressful. Rape is stressful. The loss of your buddies is stressful ... we can't muscle through trauma alone." Lydia describes the endeavor of healing and forgiveness as an even greater risk than "donning body armor and loading weapons" during Afghanistan deployment.  "Challenging your heart to heal as an incredibly powerful thing," she says. His tireless efforts have reached far beyond his own family, however.  "Going to bat for exceptional military kids" is in part due to Jeremy watching his daughter endure early interventions that include 1000's of hours of therapy and nine surgeries, all but one being brain surgery. She was born with hydrocephalus and a host of other conditions, which have prompted him to publicly acknowledge and appreciate "small steps" for individuals with disabilities. Jeremy has put an inordinate amount of energy into policy impacting our wounded warriors and veterans, campaigning for the "Tricare for Kids" legislation (Sec 735 of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act), and testifying before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Subcommittee in Washington D.C. More recently, he attended the major (first time) conference-collaboration on Military Kids with Special Health Care Needs at NICHD (the kids part of NIH). The conference explored "what is known about military connected children with special health care needs in terms of their educational, psychosocial, and physical health statuses."  Jeremy Hilton believes moving mountains is still possible, no matter what your situation. Her biggest hit, "Let the Rain" — co-written with the legendary John Oates — remained on the charts for 21 weeks. It then became the theme song for the Brides Against Breast Cancer charitable organization providing more than 2 million dollars in support and services for those facing the disease.  Margo Rey began performing at just 11 years of age. A native of Mexico, she's fluent in English and Spanish, and possesses conversational skills in French and Italian. It's no wonder she's been able to deliver her alternative pop songs in eight languages! Her love of performing flowed over into dancing in New York City Broadway shows and voice-over talent in the animated film "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." Margo's belief that "education and personal support are just as critical as prompt medical treatment," was solidified during her own battle with breast cancer. She volunteered her time to be the national ambassador for "Brides Against Breast Cancer" while undergoing chemotherapy and planning her own wedding to the famous comedian and actor Ron "Tater Salad" White. Her nationwide visits during the campaign helped raise funds for education, information and outreach services for cancer patients and their families. Margo Rey's desire to make a difference doesn't stop. She'll join us from home-base in Beverly Hills, following her performance of The National Anthem at the Armed Forces Foundation Gala in Washington DC. Yet, for thousands of women without health insurance, those preventive measures are unreachable. Dr. Sandy Goldberg began a mission to change that, providing a "silver lining" for fellow Chicagoans.  Passionate about following her own advice as the on-air Health and Nutrition Contributor on Chicago's NBC-5, Dr. Sandy Goldberg was stunned when she heard the words, "You have breast cancer and you need to have surgery immediately." After the initial shock-wave subsided, Dr. Goldberg channeled her emotions in the path she's confidently walked for years -- she shared her story on camera. Her journey captured viewers' attention, put a spotlight on breast cancer, and resulted in an Emmy Award. The series entitled One Woman's Story became an inspiration to thousands and served as a catalyst beyond her cancer diagnosis.  In 2002, A Silver Lining Foundation was born. Dr. Goldberg's passion to make a difference in others' lives has been magnified through the foundation's mission of providing resources, quality of life services, and cost-free screening mammograms to underinsured individuals. It appears that life was scripting her capacity as founder and chairperson for years, with such honors as a humanitarian award, recognition for "heroes in healthcare," and most recently, "Chicagoan of the Year 2013." Her expanded vision for the foundation, as well as the driving force of compassion will be our spirited focus with Dr. Goldberg in this episode. Little Pink Houses of Hope provides just that -- a retreat that is designed to help families relax, reconnect and rejuvenate as they love each other through it. From physical and emotional to financial and spiritual, the entire family is affected when cancer enters their lives. In 2009, Founder, Jeanine Patten Coble was diagnosed with breast cancer, the day before her family's beach vacation. Upon arriving at their annual destination, Jeanine put on her running shoes and took off to clear her head and contemplate how to prior to deliver the cancer news to her then 12-year-old son. It was there she encountered the metaphoric visual for the Little Pink Houses of Hope. Down along Old Lighthouse Road she encountered tons of completely abandoned houses with a playground in the middle. The lonliness of the scene struck a chord in her heart. As she ran back toward their own rented beach house, her mind was flooded with spontaneous creativity; "I could paint them paint ... Little Pink Houses ... I could create a cancer retreat center ... families come to get away from the daily life of cancer ... I am supposed to do something amazing with this." That experience led her to create the 501c3 charity affectionately and appropriately named "Little Pink Houses of Hope." Their tagline captures the essence of getting through cancer and beyond: "Love Stronger; Laugh Harder; Love Deeper." Tune in to hear from Founder and Executive Director, Jeanine, about what it takes to "retreat" from cancer through her incredible healing model of donated beach houses (all run by volunteers). At just 11 years-of-age she created "Brat Pack 11," while her father was deployed to Afghanistan. Her foundation's mission is to recognize "the children of military heroes nationwide by providing them with unforgettable experiences and connecting them with a network of continued support. Her dedication is making quite an impression. In fact, Brat Pack 11 is administered by the "Boot Campaign" to show honor and gratitude to our nation's youngest boots on the ground. It's clear that the Boot Campaign's motto of "When They Come Back, We Give Back," mirrors Kenzie Hall's heart and mission of Brat Pack 11. "The Boot Girls" have garnered recognition and support from the media, celebrities, and others -- magnifying that "give back" motto.  On February 14th, the Boot Girls paid a visit to their long-time partner and friend, Marcus Luttrell, to deliver a $35,000 check to the Lone Star Foundation; funds raised during the January exclusive pre-release screening of the feature film Lone Survivor.  Kenzie Hall's ideas to give back are making a trailblazing difference too. In early-February, she began sorting through "wishing for hope" applications to make dreams become a reality for a lucky military brat. She's working together with The Boot Girls to provide a military brat with an exciting trip, to meet a hero or celebrity, or receive a special item. While Kenzie knows it's impossible to erase the pain of a injured military parent or losing a parent at war, at 16 years old she's making an incredible difference as one our nation's youngest boots on the ground.  Tune into this inspirational episode! 01:02:00Because Hope Matters RadionoThe Boot Campaign,Brat Pack 11,Kenzie Hall,Lone Survivor,Marcus LuttrellKenzie Hall is a military brat who's working to identify what military kids need for the long-haul. Their extraordinary effort to improve the lives of military families was celebrated in the prestigious award ceremony in 2012.  Project Sanctuary believes the whole family serves, from the battle-zone to the home-front. The award-winning organization provides military families with supportive care, education, and innovative services -- all through outdoor therapeutic retreats. Of the hundreds of families who have attended their retreats, 90% are still married and zero suicides have been reported. Program outcomes such as that are highly commendable in this era of intense military stress, especially given the millions of military families soon to transition to civilian life. "After reading that the rates of child abuse and neglect triple when a parent is deployed, Heather Ehlee was moved to do something and founded Project Sanctuary in 2007." As a Registered Nurse with more than 20 years experience, she reached out to gain community support and further education, plus a leadership team made up of military veterans. During this episode, we'll have the pleasure of introducing listeners to Jason Strickland, the Chief Development Officer at Project Sanctuary. After years of working in the corporate world, Zangaro's passion for creating meaningful music was reignited inside an unexpected journey. When he left his job to assume the role of full-time caregiver to his ailing father battling Alzheimer's disease,  Zangaro became inspired to pen the story through music. The day-to-day challenges they face blossomed into a mission of caring for others. Zangaro's music takes on real-life issues to include addiction, illness, and survival. He's teamed up with some of Atlanta's top musicians: Jason 'Lefty" Williams , Karma Lingo 2.0, The Lost Boys, Anne Marie Perry, and more. His music is often compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and it's captured the attention of The B-52s for his "Alzheimer's Music Fest" project. Zangaro's musical mission promotes Alzheimer's awareness and brings hope and help to the disempowered and misunderstood. For nearly 10 years, he's provided in-home care for his "Pops" while orchestrating tender strategies to lessen the grip of Alzheimer's. From poignant Facebook journals to a renown music fest, Zangaro has created an "open book" about Alzheimer's, thereby erasing social stigmas and magnifying the hope that remains. Kathy's latest article in CURE discussed the chemo fog -- dubbed "chemobrain." Until recently, the cognitive impairment experienced by patients post-treatment has been a bit of a mystery. Quality of life, ability to work and family relationships can all be impacted as the muddle becomes apparent, and may include: attention and concentration difficulties, changes in executive functioning and psychomotor ability, diminished processing speed, language and visual-spatial skill problems. Finally, there are therapeutic and practical approaches to help lessen the frustration and provide possible rehabilitation. Kathy will delve into the research outcomes and complexities of chemobrain in this segment. Furthermore, we'll be talking about the late effects of treatment for adult survivors of pediatric cancers. There are an "estimated 395,000 survivors of childhood cancers living in the U.S. and the vast majority experience treatment fall-out as adults. Health problems range from organ dysfunction to hearing problems to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some patients start experiencing "late effects" within six months, for others its years after treatment. Thankfully, there are strides being made to lessen the potential for harm. Together, we look forward to Kathy LaTour's quarterly visits as she shares the highlights of CURE Magazine as Editor at Large, blended with her compassion and experience as a survivor. With unrelenting fortitude and courage, Joni Aldrich spent countless hours using her background as a research analyst to dig through hoards of information, in an all-out effort to save her husband from cancer's wrath. When the facts, treatment modalities, and words failed to sustain him, she adamantly refused to let the light of hope go out.   Passing on what she wished she would have known then, Joni authored three books chronicling her experience. Her message is clear: no one has to be alone in the fight against the devastating disease of cancer. Through Caregiving S.O.S., she literally seeks to provide a life-preserver to patients and their families during, and after, the battle.  Her compassionate wisdom has been featured in The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, Dallas News, Yahoo! Buzz, The Sun Sentinel, Guideposts Magazine and other print media, as well as on countless radio and television programs around the nation.  Join us for an hour of magnifying the single syllable of HOPE -- with words from Joni Aldrich to weather the storm of cancer, and beyond.   01:04:00Because Hope Matters RadionoWhen a loved one is diagnosed with cancer there's a fast-paced learning curve that takes place alongside the roller-coaster ride of compassionate caregiving. It's been scientifically proven that stress impacts the immune system. The question of whether stress causes disease has been answered; now the question is "how"? Part of the answer lies in learning to manage stress. Doing so can reduce the risk of heart disease, digestive disorders, skin disorders including Shingles, as well as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and even cancer.  In this episode, we'll talk about how holiday traditions shape our desires and expectations. Traditions can often provide comforting familiarity, but they can also be a source of stress. Together with Kathy LaTour, Editor at Large of CURE Magazine, we'll delve into a list of do's and do not’s to help listeners avoid stress-causing pitfalls. Kathy will put a spotlight on what's healthy and what's not, when it comes to the dynamic of "tradition."  Strategies that lend to advance planning, maintaining self-care, and keeping communication channels open are especially important amid the holiday hustle and bustle. We'll talk about how those strategies not only contribute to a sense of calm, they literally affect one's immune system. Kathy LaTour will uncover simple immune boosters that are linked to our thoughts and actions. Even food choices, adequate sleep, and healthy relationships impact our ability to override stress and savor the joy of the season. Join us for the sake of tradition as we explore what's healthy and what's not. Furthermore, over 13 million of them are doing so from a distance. But, who's providing a life preserver to help those caregivers navigate around the accompanying stress, overwhelm, and potetial burn-out? In this episode, we'll meet back with Rae-Lynn Ziegler to tap her in-depth understanding of identifying and alleviating stressors during such difficult life journeys. Her "out of the box" approaches use practical tools that are akin to a life preserver for long-distance caregiving. The military is working to change the way sexual assault is handled within the ranks. Mike Domitrz has been tackling the difficult topic of sexual assualt for more than a decade. He founded "The Date Safe Project" to change after-the-fact approaches that aren't focused on prevention and do little to address the root problem. Military installations, schools and universities, faith-based institutions, state agencies, and parents alike have turned to The Date Safe Project. Mike's face-to-face approach is hailed for clearing up misconceptions about healthy dating, intimacy, consent, sex, and respect. His "Can I Kiss You" program never includes a single PowerPoint slide. Yet, it delivers life-changing insight, big impact, and capacity to interact with thousands of attendees at once. It all began in 1989 with a phone call from Mike's sister. She'd been raped. He struggled to comprehend what had happened to her. He transferred colleges to be closer to home and his sister, and to help his family. Witnessing the pain, rage, and sadness of his parents, relatives, and friends, Mike knew something had to be done to address bystander intervention, verbal consent, respect of boundaries, decision-making, and ultimate support for survivors -- then he did it!  Mike Domitrz has been called nationwide and overseas to address all branches of the military at all levels of training. In this compelling episode, we'll talk with Mike about how he's changing the norms on military installations, and beyond.  01:08:00Because Hope Matters RadionoMike Domitrz,The Date Safe Project,Can I Kiss You,Sexual Assault Training, military sexual assaultAccording to Pentagonreports, over 80% of troops never report sexual assault because they fear retaliation. The media has often spotlighted their daughter, Mia Hamm, as a world renowned olympic and world cup soccer champion. Her team paved the way for the formation of the 1st woman's professional soccer league, the 1st FIFA Woman's World Cup in the sport and two Olympic team medals.  Growing Up Base to Base, Mia is one of six children raised inside the military culture, moving seven times during Bill Hamm's career as an Air Force fighter pilot. Like many military families they became closer and more resilient as a result of their frequent transitions. Yet, their ability to transcend challenges and move forward with courage was put through an unexpected test when their son, Garrett, died of bone marrow disease complications. For Mia, losing her "soccer buddy" led her to form a foundation to help other families facing similar circumstances.  The desire to help others in extraordinary ways appears to be a Hamm family trait. Bill and Stephanie Hamm serve as board member volunteers with the McRae-Gaines Learning Center, providing opportunity for "excellent education from the least to the greatest." Together with  Bill and Stephanie, we'll reflect on the challenges military families face and how those lessons in resiliency can affect positive change within our communities. Over 48,000 have a parent that has been wounded or killed during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Imagine two close knit families. The children said goodbye to one of the most important people in their lives, their dads as they departed for deployment, destination: the combat zone. They worried they may be injured or worse. Later, they learn their dad is coming home unexpectedly, but it’s far from a time to celebrate. Their parent, the person they love, admire and look to for strength and support, is now in need of both. He is fighting for his life. The children’s lives are suddenly turned upside down, never to be the same. In this episode, we will meet the youngsters of two families that are willing to share their stories of patriotism, sacrifice, loyalty and bravery as they openly share what life is like for the families of a wounded parent. Jordan Saffron’s dad, SSGT Terry Saffron, was wounded in Bagdad, Iraq on May 5, 2004 when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded, killing two soldiers and causing critical injuries to their dad. Her Mom, Colleen Saffron has also faced her own battles.  Sheldon and Bailey Hale are the oldest siblings of four children. Their father, SSGT Aaron Hale, also suffered catastrophic injuries during an IED explosion. Complicating things further, their mom, Kelly Hale was then diagnosed with cancer. Prior to her battle with cancer, Lockey was an enthusiastic and driven personal trainer.   In 2006, Lockey endured an 18-month battle with breast cancer. Along with a regimen of chemotherapy, surgical procedures were also included. Once she completed her treatment and recovery period, Lockey realized that many survivors did not know how to make themselves whole in body and spirit. The value of physical activity and exercise were sorely lacking in her recovery protocol.   It was then that Lockey decided to do something about it.   Upon completion of a specialized exercise training course through the Cancer Exercise Training Institute, Lockey created ‘MovingOn,’ a rehabilitative exercise program geared toward cancer patients. The focus was not just on the physical being, but the whole person. The ultimate goal of the program is to help women regain control of their bodies and their emotional beings.   Lockey has appeared on WABCTV, WCBSTV, News 12, WKTU & Talk About Health Radio, to name but a few. Her ultimate goal is to reach the more than 250,000 U.S. women dignosed.  The spark for Gina's idea began while she was compiling letters for a novel in the works -- after her own batle with breast cancer. Family, friends and well-wishers sent cards and letters that Gina credits with "healing power" -- tangible bits of hope that she read and reread. She wanted to give the gift back. So, she created 'GIRLS LOVE MAIL," a charity that collects hand-written letters of encouragement to distribute to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Gina's foundation has inspired groups of writers from book clubs, Girls Scouts, Sororities, and more. The motto is simple yet powerful: "Do your breast self-exam and if you don't find a lump, write a letter to someone who did." All that's required is a bit of time and a postage stamp. Costs to run the Girls Love Mail charity are met through a grant.  In addition to being a corporate trainer and speaker, Gina Mulligan is the author of a novel entitled Across the Room. She has published 100's of articles that have gained a spotlight in national magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, Home and Garden, AAA, and PC Computing. Shannon Miller is The Most Decorated American Gymnast in history. She is the only American to rank among the Top 10 All-Time gymnasts and the only female athlete to be inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame - twice! Shannon's winning record includes 59 International and 49 National competition medals; over half are gold. Her quest to win took an unexpected turn in 2010, when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Competing with Cancer wasn't something Shannon anticipated as a married 34-year-old new parent to her son Rocco. A routine screening revealed germ cell ovarian cancer; she had no symptoms.    Upon retiring from Olympic competition, Shannon earned a law degree and worked as a motivational speaker while developing "Shannon Miller Lifestyle" to encourage health and fitness for women. After facing the greatest hurdle of her life and conquering ovarian cancer, she continues to empower women to make their health a priority. Through her website, book, advocacy, and radio show, she helps patients and survivors maintain a positive attitude, conquer obstacles and restore balance. Our 1st in the line-up of special guests is Kathy LaTour. She is the editor-at-large and co-founder of CURE Magazine: an award-winning complimentary magazine with the most extensive direct to patient circulation in the nation.   Kathy LaTour has a flair for writing. She is also a 27-year cancer survivor. First diagnosed with breast cancer in 1986, Kathy became an active member of the national cancer survivor community. After interviewing hundreds of health care professionals, she wrote The Breast Cancer Companion. Her book was so successful and informative that excerpts were printed in numerous publications, such as Good Housekeeping and the bestseller, Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul. If that wasn’t enough, Kathy was instrumental in the creation of The Bridge Breast Center in Dallas, Texas. Its mission is to provide diagnosis and treatment to uninsured breast cancer patients. Still feeling she could do more, in 2001, Kathy co-founded CURE Magazine. Kathy is also a performer. Her one-woman show, “One Mutant Cell” is a humorous and, at the same time, very serious account of her journey through breast cancer. She performs the show a minimum of forty times a year at various cancer events. In this special segment, Kathy LaTour will share her accomplishments while also speaking intimately about the FEAR OF RECURRENCE: the most prevalent, and often debilitating, psychological issue faced when treatment ends -- for survivors and their caregivers. Our line-up of featured guests this month will reveal the facts and myths, the trials and triumphs, and the hope and future for those loving each other through it. Join us September 9th at 7:00PM EDT as we welcome Richard Taylor, Ph.D. "He was the first to become sensitized to the relationship between how we treat older people and how we treat people with dementia -- as damaged good, incomplete human beings, with little or nothing to contribute to family or society." Richard reveals Alzheimer's From the Inside Out, through his writing, his life story, and his unique and powerful voice.  For more than a decade, Richard has struggled with dementia, probably of the Alzheimer's type. He surrounds himself with family, friends, and colleagues who enable him to forge a new purpose to "speak up" and "speak out" with life-affirming thoughts and actions. His message of hope and dignity has been heard around the world, including his co-founding of "I Can I Will" supported by Alzheimer's Disease International.  In this etching-on-the-heart episode, we'll talk candidly with Richard Taylor about living with, and making a difference inside dementia, of the Alzheimer's type.    01:01:00Because Hope Matters RadionoRichard Taylor,I Can I Will,World Alzheimers Month,Hope Matters,Rob CaresSeptember marks World Alzheimer's Awareness month. The holiday pays tribute to those who have been instrumental in our nation's strength, prosperity and well-being. It is our honor to introduce our listeners to Rebecca Townsend. Her exemplary labors of love have directly contributed to the well-being of military families. While serving as a school psychologist in 2006, Rebecca recognized a gap in civilian mental health services for members returning from war. She responded by creating the non-profit SAFE: Soldiers and Families Embraced. In 2007, Rebecca enlisted other mental health professionals to provide free counseling and other services to active duty soldiers, veterans and their families. He searched for others in his age group that could provide him with information, comfort, camaraderie and friendship. Unfortunately, the well was dry. Jonny fought his disease without the support he had hoped to find. Though he won his battle with cancer, his relationship with the disease had just been formed. Through his experiences, Jonny decided to create a non-profit organization, Imerman Angels. Its mission is to ensure that others would not have to face their particular form of cancer alone. Jonny's organization matches a cancer fighter/survivor with an individual (Mentor Angel) who has triumphed over the same type of cancer. Today, more than 4,000 cancer survivors and 1,500 caregivers are part of his ever-expanding network, and their outreach extends to more than 60 countries. Jonny has been recognized and interviewed throughout the multi-media world, including Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, "Oprah and Friends" with Dr. Oz, Men's Health, ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN and countless others. With no family history and 13 years of clear mammograms, she never considered the possibility that an annual check up would reveal breast cancer. Being in the midst of transitioning jobs and insurance coverage, she began asking questions of healthcare providers. She quickly learned there was no clear solution to help alleviate patients' financial stress. In 2006, armed with financial and disease statistics, and corporate knowledge, Molly set out to make a viable difference with "The Pink Fund." Granted nationwide recognition and sponsorship to include the Ford Motor Company's "Warriors in Pink" designation, her vision continues to grow. Brain tumors account for 25% of all cancers in children. Our featured guest this week underwent a craniotomy in 2012, at the young age of 17, to remove a grade II astrocytoma. The tumor type grows relatively slowly and usually doesn't have well-defined borders. Due to its infiltrative nature, recurrences are relatively common.                  Catherine Blotner is a patient advocate for the young adult cancer community.  As a featured guest on the Cure Magazine weekly Twitter chat, she shared the side effects of treatment and the impacts at home and school. More than 60% of caregivers report  being under high stress while helping a loved one diagnosed with dementia, traumatic brain injuries, as well as other choronic illnesses. An active social life can often extend seniors' lives by years, and reduce stress, and increase feelings of self-worth. Current research shows that social activity and engagement can actually slow down the progression of incurable ailments -- even Alzheimer's and dementia. Exercise with social interaction is believed to stimulate the formation of brain synapses, enhance blood flow in the brain and increase the formation of nerve cells. When such diseases rob the elderly of freedom and independence, well-designed Senior Day Programs can provide therapeutic and health services, social activities and restored dignity. Additionally, caregivers benefit from stretches of time to work without interruption, enjoy freedom from responsibility, and simply refresh their own mind and body. During this episode, we'll explore the benefits of senior day care in depth and discuss the process of creating and implementing a program, plus the necessary monitoring of a loved one's safety and participation. Ann Fonfa was informed she had breast cancer in 1993. Rather than go the traditional route of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, she chose a different path. Ann pursued alternative therapies. Did she have a death wish by deviating from the accepted treatment paradigm? Apparently not! After all, she's our special guest this evening! Due to her success in beating breast cancer and the medical journey she traveled, Ann realized there are many others that could benefit from her lessons learned. It wasn't long before she created a website, christianed it "The Annie Appleseed Project," and formed a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Ann hosts an annual conference attended by many from around the world, speaks at numerous summits and events, has been interviewed on countless TV and radio shows, and June 24 at 7pm eastern she joins us on the Because Hope Matters Radio Hour. Ann's mission is to educate everyone that traditional oncology, for many, is  a start. However, Integrative Oncology, which adds complimentary and alternative therapies to the equation, might be worthy of consideration. Ann will share what she's learned and provide us with some "out of the box" thoughts and suggestions when battling cancer. We hope you enjoy this exciting interview. 01:01:00Because Hope Matters Radionocancer, caregiving, holistic medicine,CAM Complimentary and Alternative Medicines,OncologyAnn Fonfa was informed she had breast cancer in 1993. In the early 1990s, she became alarmed over the increasing number of very young women she saw in her practice diagnosed with breast cancer.  When her own mother was diagnosed and then died from breast cancer, Dr. Horner began an intensive search of the medical literature to find what -- if anything -- could help prevent breast cancer.  What she found was a tremendous amount of little-known research proving that woman can significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer and of most other chronic diseases. In June 2002, Dr. Horner left her plastic surgery practice so that she could dedicate herself full time to writing and teaching about her passion: prevention-oriented medicine and how to become and stay healthy naturally.  Join us this Monday, May 27th, at 7PM EDT for an in-depth look at the current trend in cancer treatment, along with a candid discussion about Angelina Jolie's hailed decision and what it means for other women who carry the BRCA gene or have a family history of cancer. Dr. Horner brings other, often unrecognized, important factors to the table. We’ll plug her extensive knowledge and peruse the pages of her award winning book, Waking The Warrior Goddess.   01:00:00Because Hope Matters RadionoChristine Horner MD,BRCA Positive,Angelina Jolie,Hope Matters,Rob CaresThis past week, Heaven gained an angel as yet another family said an untimely good-bye after a two-year battle with BRCA 2 positive, triple negative breast canFinding Hope with Advanced Cancer - A Survivor's Storyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2013/05/20/finding-hope-with-advanced-cancer--a-survivors-storyFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2013/05/20/finding-hope-with-advanced-cancer--a-survivors-story/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2013/05/20/finding-hope-with-advanced-cancer--a-survivors-storyMon, 20 May 2013 23:00:00 GMTFinding Hope with Advanced Cancer - A Survivor's Story Join the conversation as we celebrate an evening of hope with author, speaker and blogger, Tami Boehmer. When a parent hears the words “you have cancer,” it can be difficult enough to wrap his or her own head around the diagnosis – let alone explain it to a child. Founder, Peter van Dernoot believes that every child whose parent is diagnosed with cancer should be given early tools and emotional support to cope. Through workshops around the world, The Children’s Treehouse Foundation provides cancer centers and hospitals with professional training; their CLIMB® Program helps normalize feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear and anger. Professionals, families and children receive tools that support, empower, and celebrate the fact that Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery (CLIMB). Team Martina is made up of friends and fans of country artist Martina McBride who want to participate in the fight against cancer. In 2011, team members from around the United States met for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at L.P. Field in Nashville in honor of Martina's song "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" and those battling cancer everywhere. Through matched donations by John and Martina McBride, the team raised over $22,000. In December of 2011, the team was honored to assist with Operation Love, accompanied by Martina McBride, as a nationwide effort delivered Christmas stockings to over 1200 chemotherapy patients. The effort was replicated in 2012. In March of 2012, Team Martina organized the Taira Baughman Benefit Concert, together with Hope Matters (and other volunteers), to assist the cancer patient and her family with catastrophic medical expenses. The concert raised over $12,000. Most recently, Team Martina is partnering with the TJ Martell Foundation to raise money for the first ever Martina McBride & Team Martina Breast Cancer Grant. Listen in for the details on this ground-breaking effort, as well as other ways that Team Martina is making a world of difference in the fight against cancer. The team is led by volunteer captains Sheila Jones of Alabama, Amy Schmidlein of Georgia, and by Tracy Weaver of Tennessee, Director of Fan Relations for Martina McBride. His research in metacognition (thinking about your own thinking processes) has inspired him to write and publish over 1,000 articles and strategies to help individuals around the world. He is the founder and director of Lines of Love (www.linesoflove.org), a growing organization that is providing support nationally in the effort to educate and offer awareness about depression, anxiety, suicide prevention, and cyberbullying.  “We need to do all we can to remove the stigma attached to mental illness,” says Rus. “So many individuals are affected directly and indirectly by the actions of those who need help and support, but are just not getting it. Many of the resources are available already; the challenge is in matching the individuals in need with those resources. That is just one of the many initiatives of Lines of Love.” Rus currently has a work of fiction, Cold Rock (http://amzn.to/13zjnDx) that addresses the problems and consequences associated with bullying. He is currently working on a series of books with writing and creativity strategies to strengthen individuals of all ages. Through Robyn’s passionate advocacy, she found many resources that helped her along the way and felt compelled to share this information and advice with others on their cancer journey.  This site contains a wealth of information on resources and organizations that offer assistance to anyone touched by cancer and can educate both patients and caregivers on every aspect of cancer and it's treatment.  00:47:00Because Hope Matters RadionoBecause Hope Matters Radio,Maryann Makekau,Rob Harris,Robyn Gross Stoller,Cancer HawkCancerhawk.com is a website designed to help guide people through the cancer experience.  Created by Robyn Stoller, CancerHawk was born out of frustration fromFamily Hour: Meet & Greet at Because Hope Matters Talk Radiohttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2013/02/12/family-hour-meet-greet-at-because-hope-matters-talk-radioFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2013/02/12/family-hour-meet-greet-at-because-hope-matters-talk-radio/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/becausehopematters/2013/02/12/family-hour-meet-greet-at-because-hope-matters-talk-radioTue, 12 Feb 2013 00:00:00 GMTFamily Hour: Meet & Greet at Because Hope Matters Talk RadioJoin us at Because Hope Matters Talk Radio for this special "family hour" -- invitation only.
