The problem of unemployment and underemployment is facing Americans and citizens of other countries. The media reports a global recession that is not painting a promising future. Hopelessness is being experienced by many with college degrees, as well as those with no high school diploma or GED. The closing of schools, college programs, and work training programs would lead us to believe that teachers are being laid-off but contrary to this belief teachers are not experiencing the unemployment blues as much as adult students. A major research study from the U.S. Department of Labor reveals that teachers under public school systems are not facing severe unemployment rates as many had thought. Therefore, we ask teachers, especially college faculty, to use their wisdom and show empathy and compassion for students and parents who may be dealing with finding jobs, trying to make schedules fit, and pay for tuition and books in this economy.
